Review: Floog continues to offer up a playful strain of minimal techno which now finds a home on a new label called Dreams Come True. If you're always searching for those cool and deadly, sexy vocal minimal joints which inject some sass into a long-trucking DJ set you're going to be all over 'Piesa Cu Story', which takes a soulful female vocal lick and builds a slinky, moody groove around. Antraum then shifts the key of the track and adds some trippy shimmer for a perfect after Horus remix. Review: Everyone remembers the saying about slow-boiled frogs, but what actually happens when you attempt to boil one in real life? Surprise, surprise, modern science counters the aphoristic claim with a charge of falsehood; that real-life frogs do indeed tend to jump out of boiling water regardless of the time it takes to boil one. New York slowcore and shoegaze favourite DIIV's latest album Frog In Boiling Water seems to recall this mood as much, propelling us into action with the femural puissance of an amphibian's hunkers, despite the album's consistent plodding, its dourness, its steadiness, its slow boil. Naturally, in light of the boiled frog analogy's usual connotations, the album is nominally about the contradictions of late stage capitalism and overwhelming technological advance, with its sound evoking the feeling of bowling into a non-risk-assessed future, and the bittersweet sense of bliss and personal confrontation this evokes at every turn.

Review: Easily, the most controversial album in the Metallica back catalogue (with the exception of their Lou Reed collab LP Lulu), St. Anger was originally released in 2003, and marked yet another stylistic shift from the thrash metal titans. Following on from the hard rock-oriented sister albums Load and Re:Load in the mid-nineties, and their Garage Inc. covers collection, the band's eighth full-length would eschew virtuosic guitar solos (once a core staple of their sonic makeup) and their galloping style of frenetic riffage; replacing them with a more jagged style of composition and performance, leading to a unique sound falling somewhere between groove and alt-metal, yet much rawer than either of the two. Maligned by many, yet defended by a vocal section of the fanbase, there's something remarkably ballsy about the sheer abandon of their former selves on this record, while cuts such as the pummelling title-track, the southern-tinged bedlam of 'Frantic', and the chunky heft of 'My World', are all criminally slept on latter day contributions, forgotten to time for being the musical blacksheep of the Metallica discography. Also, if you ever deeply desired to hear drummer Lars Ulrich's utterly bizarre snare sound with pure audio fidelity, this lush orange vinyl 2xLP reissue has you covered.

Review: DIIV is an indie band from Brooklyn who first started recording in 2010 together. The band is a mix of post rock, lo-li, Indie with some shoegaze elements. The band has garnered some strong success for an indie band with their last album reaching the Billboard top 200 album list. Frog In Boiling Water is their fourth album and reminds many of 90s UK bands like My Bloody Valentine and Ride. Their first single 'Brown Paper Bag' was released on the same day the new album was announced just a few months ago. Review: Wally Badarou's incredible impression on modern pop music is intrinsically linked to his work in Nassau at the legendary Compass Point studios. There, the Paris-born synth legend lent his talent to a staggering amount of legendary music, but his own solo works have a magic all their own. 1984's Echoes might be the best known of his records, but there's a surprise entry from 2001 which is known to the deep-digging heads at Be With as a legendary record in need of wider release. Colors Of Silence was originally conceived as a yoga-minded release, but it's easier to consider it as another trip into the fantasy worlds Badarou can conjure from his eloquent synth work, and now it finally has a vinyl release.

Review: The first anyone heard from Robert Fleck was an early drop on Well Street back in 2018, and it's been quiet since then. Anyone following Well Street knows it's a hot tip for upfront artists in the fractured fissures of the UK underground, and Fleck makes a welcome return to prove the point. There's a lot of different touchstones you could point to on this release, from nimble-footed broken beat and a whiff of nu jazz orchestration, not to mention a bass music sensibility and an appreciation for deeper strains of UK techno. But more than all that, Fleck merges his unique spread of influences into something fresh and unique, comfortably slipping between conventional genre markings with the kind of flair we've come to expect from Well Street.

Review: It could have all been so different when Death In Vegas first formed. Richard Fearless and Steve Hellier spawned the project in 1994 and got signed under the name Dead Elvis, but legal wrangling got in the way and they used the name for their debut album instead. Now Music On Vinyl have repressed the 1997 classic so we can revel in the grizzled take on big beat and trip hop the pair cooked up. It's very much of its time, but there's a snarl to the production which sets Death In Vegas apart from their peers at the time, opting for the dive bar ambience over the festival main stage you'd hear when playing The Chemical Brothers or Leftfield. For that reason Dead Elvis has aged very well indeed.

Review: An air of mystery surrounds this new While My Sequencer Gently Bleeps project, but what we do know is that they have two superb EPs dropping at the start of 2024. This one, OK, opens with 'Amber' which is a nice undulating and deep cut with lush synth smears. 'Emptiness' hangs synths in the air over more lithe broken beats and 'Felt' is a stripped back rhythm with majestic chords, blurts, bleeps and more all adding colour. 'Hesitation' and 'Burton' round out this sublimely supple and subtle synth record.

Review: As part of the ongoing Coil reissue program, this classic album has been remastered and now arrives on CD. There are echoes of the band's mid-1980s cult classic album Horse Rotorvator in The Ape of Naples in that it has such a wide variety of sounds and styles. This one first came out back in 2005 and is a go-to for fans as it is just a great example of the band's singular sonic world. The album was put together by Peter Christopherson a year after Jhonn Balance's deadly fall and it features re-workings of the live favourites like 'Amethyst Deceivers' and Love Secret's Domain album track 'Teenage Lightning' plus a numb of tunes first meant for the ultimately ill-fated Backwards long player.

Review: 'Symmetry Systems' is the new LP by Dennis Huddleston AKA 36. Inspired by Warp's 'Artificial Intelligence' releases from the early 90's, it's a melodic, synthesiser-driven record, with a wink to the past and a nod towards the future. "I have a deep love for those early Warp albums, particularly the Artificial Intelligence compilations. It was a wonderful time for UK electronic music. That beautiful, warm machine sound, with an optimistic (if somewhat naive) vision for the future. I found the whole thing incredibly inspiring and wanted to revisit those memories, albeit with a 36 twist" Like 'Wave Variations' before it, this record explores various approaches to the theme, with each track directly inspiring the next one. All tracks are sequenced in the order they were made. 'Symmetry Systems' is a collection of hypnotic machine music, made with a delicate human touch.

Review: Andy Ash is one of the UK's most low-key house producers. He has released on an array of smaller boutique house labels and always brings some broad influences as well as great knowledge of the classics. Now he pops up rather out of the blue on Quintessentials with a superb album of stylish as well as useful house. There are steamy Windy City vocal cuts like the opener, jacked-up workouts like 'Life' raw yet somehow soulful groovers like 'I'm Here' featuring a well-placed sample that older heads with recognise and beautifully deep, balmy and heads-down numbers like 'Another.' A real house album for real house heads.

Review: It's taken a while for Nick Cave to get round to releasing a follow-up to 2005's self-explanatory B-Sides and Rarities compilation. We'd argue that it's been worth the wait though. The 16-year gap between the releases has allowed for a wider sweep of the iconic artist's archives, so much so that it features no less than 27 tracks stretched across two coloured slabs of wax. Record one focuses on B-sides, bonus tracks and rarities, including a duet with Debbie Harry and a superb live version of 'Push The Sky Away' with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. It's the second record that will most excite fans though, featuring as it does unreleased material. There are plenty of unheard songs of course, but also early recordings of such fan favourites as 'Skeleton Tree' and 'Bright Horses'.
