Review: After a strong 2014, in which he dropped two highly regarded EPs on his friend's CrazyJack label, Parisian producer Lowris pops up on Danish deep techno imprint Concealed Sounds. "AAA" sets the tone, with Lowris peppering a tough, undulating groove - replete with a chunky dub bassline - with all manner of cosmic noises, trippy effects and tipsy electronics. Delaphine regular S.A.M goes deeper on his "re-shape", which makes great use of liquid chords and heady melodies. Finally, "BTass" sees Lowris return to the dense, percussive style with which he made his name, turning in the sort of stripped-back drum jam that should ignite dancefloors that like it tough but minimal.

Arriving in March 2020 - a moment in time when most people probably weren't focused on the release schedule given the world, or at least the Western Hemisphere, was on the cusp of previously unthinkable lockdowns - Abolition of the Royal Familia deserves huge props for a number of reasons. Firstly, it reflects acid house-ambient legends The Orb's staunchly political undertones. Secondly, it's their 16th studio album, which is a triumph in itself. And, finally, it's a really, really strong record.
Now we have the appropriately titled Guillotine Mixes as a standalone release, and what a beautiful successor to the throne it is. Drafting the likes of Violeta Vicci, Andy Falconer and David Harrow, the tracks span retro sci fi Italo, dub-ambient, half-time dnb, progressive and deep house, spatial drone, and cosmic slo-mo. A marvellous reflection of the sounds that have come and lasted during The Orb's storied and utterly incomparable journey to date.

Review: James Pants, Dorian Concept, Darq E Freeker are amongst those that contribute exclusive new material to Amada, a new compilation on All City curated by producer and DJ Mamiko Motto. A regular feature on Dalston radio hub NTS, Motto's A&R past working for Amsterdam label Kindred Spirits is put to good use here as the Lithuanian DJ (and sometime Hud Mo collaborator) pulls together an international cast of beat heavy talent, both established and new. Some fourteen tracks deep (if you include the bonus flexi disc) highlights on Amada come thick and fast with Stones Throw's synth nerd James Pants, Luckyme artist Claude Speed and the vastly under-rated Dorian Concept all excelling.

Review: Tofistock roster member Myki delivers a hat-trick of heaters on their latest and greatest EP yet, 'Eamu'. Whipping up a rave-thunderstorm on the A-sider, 'EEE' is filled with juggling rhythms, crunchy stabs, and silkily sneaky basslines. The elegantly rude B-side, 'AAA', meanwhile, hears samples from the timeless 'UFO' by ESG, not to mention the artist's own masterful trademarks. Review: With his new album Eating Late, punky techno producer Michael J Blood pares back the raucousness for a minute, reflecting the more relaxed corners of his vast, vignette-based sonic tapestry. Blood is one of those artists who revels in indulging many branching, seemingly raw ideas; and again on the likes of 'Try To Keep', 'Breathe Properly' and/or 'Swamptrix', it's clear that he's not messed around nor dawdled in converting these ideas from the pure idea stuff into quick, bottled tracks. Just when you thought Blood couldn't get any more adventurous, you're served everything from bleepy ambient to wonky beatsmithing to lo-fi techno to whacked-out megahertz-trawls, all on a neat 13-track platter.

Review: After the splurge of Spaghetti Western compilations that they've put out over the last few years, the Semi Automatic labels is back with another heavy dosage of niche soundtrack action for the heads. Ranging from psych rock to prog and electronic, Library Of Sound Grooves focuses on the Italian cinema movement between 1967-1975, years when the European nation really knew how to put together films and scores. This excellent selection of music contains plenty of garage fun, spearheaded by the likes of The Sparrows, The Pawnshop and even Italy's own Gianni Marchetti, but there are also more experimental moments, like the percussive twist that is Luis Bacalov's "Boulders Movement 2", or master Bruno Nicolai's "Giano". It is a must-have for anyone interested in one of the finest cinema movements ever.

Review: New York punks Love Child first burst onto the early 90s scene in the same aeonic breath as Pavement, Sebadoh and Beat Happening. But despite the ignition and hype, their debut seven-inch and subsequent releases have remained long out of print until now. Never Meant to Be: 1988-1993 pulls from these releases and some unreleased radio sessions, unearthing a trove of lost gems by the quadrangle of Will Baum, Alan Licht, Rebecca Odes and Brendad O'Malley. The former obscurity is undeserved and the reissue deserved, as the climaxes on this record - from the garbly top-reg guitar solo on 'Know Its Alright' to the tape-warblings of 'Sofa' (through and despite which we can still make out its humourous lyrics) - are full of forceful punk rapace.

Review: The Only Music Matters label is slowly but surely building up a fine head of steam as it now offers up a sixth EP in just a couple of years. As always it is an unknown artist behind these stripped-back and direct-to-dancefloor beats and each one goes long for over eight minutes. That playtime is well warranted, too, as 'AAA001A' is the sort of groove you never want to end: dry drums and hits and paddy bass that are tightly woven together into a hypnotic sonic tapestry. 'BBB001B' is a little more gritty and twitchy to fire those sleep-deprived after-party synapses while 'BBB002B' shuts down with some underlapping tech-house funk and tripped-out designs.

Review: Anyone who has been out dancing recently might well have already heard some of the cuts off this seventh drop from the Only Music Matters crew because it has had early support by [a:rpia:r]. We don't know who is behind the beats but they sure do know their way around a studio: 'AAA001A' is super silky minimal with deft claps and hits scattered over a smooth tech house beat with swirling vocals up top. 'BBB001B' then layers up off-grid hits and tumbling synths, glitchy percussion and a loopy beat into something that is loose yet dynamic and last of all 'BBB002B' takes off on a crushing groove with warped and smeared vocal samples adding some late night trippiness.

Review: The secretive Only Music Matters label rolls out its seventh EP here and it's from an unknown producer or producers who seem to have a love of tech house. Opener 'AAA001A' is a warped cut for freaky 'floors with trippy vocal details and gloopy beats and bass. 'BBB001B' is more airy and light in its silky minimal rhythms but is detailed with some paranoid pads that keep you on edge while 'BBB002B' rides a nice gritty, propulsive beat and has some wonky, detuned keys adding colour. Another great outing from this low-key but high-quality label.
