Review: During their time as Nexus 21, Altern-8 pair Mark Archer and Chris Peat were given the opportunity to head to Detroit and record with some of their techno heroes, Kevin Saunderson and Derrick May included. "Made In Detroit" presents these rare and significant recordings for the first time, offering a suite of tracks that fix UK-style bleep melodies (all the rage in late 1989/early 1990) to the kind of fizzing rhythms, warm bass and futuristic electronics then popular in the Motor City. There are two versions of house-tempo standout "Don't Do It Like That" (one with a whispered lead vocal by Ann Saunderson), while the clanking and metallic "Nexus" and more ghostly "No Statues" accurately fuse the best bits of both British and American techno at the time.

Review: Following up on the material reissued via Music From Memory, here is a reissue of Roberto Musci and Giovanni Venosta's sought after ambient masterpiece from 1987. The album realises sound from electric, acoustic and documentary source, taking ethnic field recordings (from Africa, Indonesia, Asia, India) as the thematic centre. While studying guitar and saxophone in his hometown of Milan, Musci developed a deep fascination for non-western music and set out to travel across India, Asia and Africa, which he would do extensively between 1974-1985. Born 1961, Giovanni Venosta is an Italian composer who specializes in collages of samples (mainly ethnic music), found sounds, live improvisation. He has also composed film soundtracks.

Review: As any dedicated electro obsessive will happily tell you, Keith Farrugia has been delivering killer cuts - most aimed squarely at peak-time dancefloors - as Sound Synthesis for well over a decade. Even so, the sleazy, energetic and acid-fired bangers he's put out on the Orbital Mechanics imprint, which he founded in 2021, have been 'next-level' good. If you have doubts about this assertion, check out Farrugia's latest EP. It begins with a chunk of grandiose, urgent, TB-303-heavy sci-fi electro (the incredible 'Dark Objects') and ends with the creepy, aggressive and frankly breath-taking 'PSM'. In between, you'll find the melancholic, bittersweet brilliance of 'FH Machines' and the starry, mid-set delight of the surprisingly uplifting 'Perpetual Motion'.

Now he pops up rather out of the blue on Quintessentials with a superb album of stylish as well as useful house. There are steamy Windy City vocal cuts like the opener, jacked-up workouts like 'Life' raw yet somehow soulful groovers like 'I'm Here' featuring a well-placed sample that older heads with recognise and beautifully deep, balmy and heads-down numbers like 'Another.' Review: Dam Funk has been foundational in crystallising Stones Throw's undisputed leadership in the nu-school funk and boogie scene, and he's up there with the great J Dilla in our books. Naturally, he's been asked to mix up the latest series of DJ Kicks and, ladies and gentlemen, it's a real masterclass - one of those comps you can safely leave on and let it do its thing on you. The mood is personified by a fine blend of electronics and tougher, funkier rhythms by artists such as Index, Moon B, and Dam himself. There are also a few rare cuts by Chicago house legend Gemini that fit in perfectly, and a whole heap of wavy, Cali-inspired electronic funk. Badass.

Review: If this is your first encounter with EXCO then prepare for a transportive experience. Their music is always something of a listening experience, an immersive journey through various continuums which is designed to take us away from whatever here and now is happening here and now. In many ways, then, they embody the true spirit of ambient - tones that are supposed to life you out, up and over. Birds of Paradise certainly achieves this. Doffing the proverbial cap to some of the genre's early pioneers, the work is mesmerising and saturated in natural sounds. The rustle of leaves, the echoes of distant towns, crystalline droplets falling into deep lakes. Using a combination of powerful refrains and delicate individual notes and motifs, it's meditative stuff.

Review: Contemporary classical seems to be having a bit of a moment in the sun right now as it breaks out of its traditional confines and makes a mark on the wider world. Bartellow, who is one-third of the Tambien project and also goes by the name Beni Brachtel in the classical scene, is back on ESP Institute with a second full-length. Noosphere brings together parts of some of his theatrical scores for WUT, Odipus and Antigone and Der Zauberberg amongst others. It takes in cues from Baroque and Impressionism with plenty of sweeping drama and moments of intense emotionality across four sides of sound.

Nanky Nimbo opens up with the deep wand warm pulsations of 'Twilight' while Boy Berger get gets more twisted with some warped synth textures over infectious and dusty drum work on 'Nexus Fusion.' Frits Wentink pumps the party with some edgy vocal loops on 'Smack Down' and the B-side trip all come good too with the subtly euphoric house of Prince Palmer's 'Pressure' and a more twisted take on things from Striker Fox. It's Wim Waldo who then shuts down with 'Nightclub Fantasies.'
