  1. 653 Miles (6:14)

  3. Dayz (6:19)
  4. Highland Spring (4:57)
Review: Last heard on Craigie Knowes, Berlin-based Fred Shepherd makes his first appearance on Church via a suitably deep, dreamy and intergalactic collection of cuts. "Dayz" sounds a little like some of Larry Heard's most far-sighted, emotive and futuristic early deep house cuts, while "Wouldn't Have It Any Other Way" is the kind of tactile, saucer-eyed breakbeat-goes-dream house number that would sound simply stunning if you listened to it while watching the sun come up. "Highland Spring" offers an icier and arguably even more picturesque take on deep house/breakbeat fusion, while opener "653 Miles" contains some of the lushest chords and most evocative piano solos we've heard for some time.

Review: As the vibrant and colourful cover artwork makes clear, Moon Boots latest album for Anjunadeep - his second following well-received 2017 debut "First Landing" - is a wonderfully kaleidoscopic and positive affair full of cheery, dancefloor-friendly songs and picturesque instrumentals (see the twinkling "Trance & Dental"). The American producer is a master at blurring the boundaries between radio-friendly house, deep synth-pop and nu-disco, and much of "Bimini Road" is based around this accessible and summery musical intersection. There are a few pleasing curveballs dotted across the LP, though, including the title track's piano-heavy Balearic chug and the sunny two-step garage-pop of Gary Saxby hook-up "Gary's House".

Review: On this second album from his Ancient Moons project, Damian Lazarus has decided to switch focus. Whereas the outfit's debut album, Message From The Other World, combined global music influences with Lazarus's usual tech-house rhythms and a touch of psychedelia, Heart of Sky is much more heavily influenced by the Crosstown Rebels' chief's rarely discussed soul boy roots. Of course, the beats and basslines still largely stick to the powder house script, it's just that this time they come accompanied by starry-eyed soul vocals, 1960s dream pop influences, bold piano flourishes, gospel choruses and, on rare occasions, smoky trip-hop aesthetics. As a result, it's undoubtedly a much more "human" album, and one with far more crossover potential than its predecessor.

Review: It's likely "Your Light" has crossed your path by now. The track has garnered regular airplay and - even among playlists on some of the UK's more discerning stations - stands out from the crowd. The good news is the other songs on The Big Moon's difficult second are also strong, moving away from the grunginess of debut "Love In The 4th Dimension" to deliver what might be remembered as the first great pop album of the roaring 20s. And that's pop with real bite. Frontman Juliette Jackson seems capable of greater levels of poetry than many of her peers. At its most poignant taking aim at the hollowness of modern womanhood, the terror of growing up without reaching "real adulthood" (see, or rather hear: "Barcelona") and being left behind by friends and their successes. That this stuff comes with rowdy choruses (opener "It's Easy Then") and hugely emotive anti-balladry ("Waves") elevates the package to future classic status.

Review: The emergent trend of tapes issued by Vancouver label 1080p subsequently being licensed for a vinyl edition continues with Moon B's sublime Lifeworld album picked up for release by Hamburg operation Growing Bag Records. The label has form in this regard, previously granting the A.r.t. Wilson tape Overworld by Andras Fox a hugely popular vinyl edition and they've chosen wisely in securing this gem from the Moon B discography. Wedged somewhere between an album and a mixtape, Lifeworld was a kaleidoscopic journey into the LA-based artist's influences and this LP version is made all the more enticing by the presence of previously unreleased Moon B jammer "Moments in Slank".

Review: Moon B's next mini-LP offering to PPU, entitled III, is a varied affair. The a side offers up the older taped track "Realms", a semi-muted yet chuggy number for the dance floor overwrought with moon-roasted synth progressions that coat the ears. "Neither Here Nor Where" is an ode to forgotten spaces and places, wrapped tightly in synth bazz and creamed pads that emanate from Moon's favorite synth, the Alpha Juno 1. Flip the record to find Moon's most "instro-spective" offerings to date. "Art Direction" bottomed out tempo conjures up images of 1984 Prince replacing Appalonia with Inga Copeland as his motorcycle passenger after a neon lit love-making session. "Moonda"'s slow fluctuation and linn drum echoes paired with sorrowful yet hopeful chords attempts to warm you in the coldest of polar vortices. "Polywarp" rounds out the affair with syruppy vacillating instrumentation paired with unforeseen wobbly bits and foreign percussive hits. -

Review: Moon B takes it back to the old school that is PPU! Atlanta-based analogue funkateer Wes Gray made his debut proper as Moon B back in 2012 on People's Potential Unlimited, and has since found further acclaim with a killer EP for London label Going Good and releases as Vaib-R and Sean Sanders for Nous and Hot Mix. Andrew Morgan's PPU has always been something of a home base for Moon B material however, with several other cross format releases in recent times. The suitably titled II is the second Moon B long player and pulls eight tracks from the home studio recordings of Wes Gray made over the past few years with that signature "slank rhythms and cutting basslines you've grown accustomed to" present and correct!

Review: A duo who've put considerable work into exploring the universes that can be located within two chords, Moon Duo may not be a band that anyone is expecting surprises or musical evolution from, rather a journey into their comforting mind-meld of Spacemen 3 drone and krautrock texture. 'Occult Architecture Vol. 2' bucks this trend in style, swapping the imposing darkness of its predecessor for open spaces and beatific soundscapes. The Balearic Neil Young lilt of 'Mirror's Edge' and alien glam stomp of 'The Crystal World', indeed, draw a map towards worlds and visions even admirers of this band didn't realise they were capable of.

Review: When you call your band Moon Duo nobody is expecting clean lines or indeed rough edges. Meeting every one of our expectations, "Stars Are The Light" is a cosmic trip into some psychedelic hinterland where the melodies are as warm as the guitars are crooning. It's a place that's audibly inviting and, while anything but homely in the suburban 2.4 kids kind of way, more welcoming than the warm embrace of a lover. Which makes sense, when you consider it's the product of Wooden Shjips Ripley Johnson and his wife, Sanae Yamada. The title track pretty much sounds like falling in love, "Eternal Shore" dances to the otherworldly rhythms of 1960s opiate seduction, and 'The World And The Sun" grows and grooves to the very centre of your soul. Put simply, it's a pretty compelling argument for the fact that psychedelic rock still has plenty to bring to the table.

2xLP containing Dead Moon greatest hits collection + 300 page, full colour hardback book
Notes: Dead Moon were a DIY band, active for 19 years. Singer and guitarist Fred Cole was playing music since the early 1960's - beginning his career as "Deep Soul Cole - the white Stevie Wonder", then joining the psychedelic garage rock band the Lollipop Shoppe / The Weeds. In the 70's and early 80's Fred and Toody Cole played in various punk, country and hard rock bands. In the late 1980's, they formed Dead Moon with Andrew Loomis. This band went on to become mythic and legendary. They lived by a DIY code built around superstitions and avoidance of conventional music industry pitfalls. Their story is completely unique amongst the pantheon on rock bands - a group who never sold out, never gave in and built a legacy of art and community piece by piece in a sustainable way almost unheard of. The book is a tribute to their unique aesthetic, unbelievable twisted path of a story, and roll as pioneers of the Portland music scene.

The book tells the entire Dead Moon saga in the words of the band itself. Just the voices of Fred, Toody and Andrew. It includes a complete illustrated discography of everything Fred, Toody and Andrew have released, song lyrics, and TONS of band photos, flyers, and weird ephemeral stuff. Lots of it has never been seen by the greater public. The package also includes 2 LP's of the "best of" Dead Moon - lovingly remastered from the original tapes. Very sturdy construction.

Review: Some years ago, Shanti Celeste and Daisy Moon were housemates and resident DJs at the same monthly Bristol club. While the former has become something of a star in the last few years, it's taken the latter a while to make her production debut. "Geometry Of Curves" was undoubtedly worth the wait though. It brilliantly blends elements of off-kilter deep house, ambient house, the bass-weight of Bristol and a melodic attention to detail that belies Daisy Moon's debutant status. The title track sets the tone, with blissful melodies and cut-up vocal snippets rising above a crunchy, dubbed-out drum machine rhythm. From then on it's a dreamy drift into the stratosphere, with the head-nodding bliss of "Halcyon" and sludgy, off-kilter weirdness of "Chambers" standing out.

Review: Moon Temple is Gabriel Andruzzi, who some of you may know as the former bass player/saxophonist and engineer from New York City (via San Diego) outfit The Rapture. This nine track album is Andruzzi's first release under this alias and comes in two volumes. According to Willie Burns WT Records, the album is a collection of "delicate interludes, acid stompers and weirdo spastic mechanical marches." Starting out with the chilling dark ambient intro "Approaching The Inner Temple", he then gets stuck into the deep acid techno jam "Sea Of Crisis" (which brings to mind the sounds of Tin Man) while "Bay Of Rainbows" goes for the jugular on this adrenalised 303 thriller.
