  5. Le Syndicat - "Maximalist" (Ekman remix) (6:05)
Review: Continuing their uncompromising fusions of artists new and old, Contort Yourself return with a punishing array of industrial thuggery from hardware manipulators you wouldn't take home to your mother. Novacom were last seen on Slumdiscs back in 2014 and here bring a fast and gnarly rhythmic tryst to bear before JK Flesh do their own snagging dance with oppressive synths and drums twirling into a heavyweight whole. French brutalists Le Syndicat then dominate the B-side with their confrontational bastardisation of techno and industrial, making the perfect source material for Ekman to get nasty with on his remix of "Maximalist".

Review: If there's one collaboration that we have bowed down to over the last few years, it's most certainly this new found friendship between London's Kevin Martin aka The Bug, and American doom metal guitarists, Earth. One wouldn't immediately make the connection between inner-city future-grime music and suburban stoner rock, but the two styles were in perfect unison, and this is because they're both fascinated with dark, looming clouds of bass. Whether that's through virtual synths or badass bass guitars, it doesn't matter, because the mood is mightily present. Concrete Desert is the alliance's debut LP, and it's all guns blazing from start to finish; tunes like "Snakes vs Rats" or "Metal Drone" represent exactly the sort of freshen-up that each respective act needed - on the one hand, The Bug could have done with some more external influences to the melodic constructions, while Earth needed a new framework to enter the minds of a new, European audience. We've dubbed this style 'metal drone', and we're pretty sure that it's gonna stick after you've played it out for a few minutes. A blinding collab, right here.

  13. Genesis Breyer P-Orridge - "One Being, One Orientation, One Power" (6:12)
Review: For the ninth volume in their ongoing compilation series, Berlin clubbing institution Berghain has handed over the reigns to man-of-many-aliases Dominick Fernow, an experimental electronic music hero known for his work as Vatican Shadow, Prurient, Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement and Exploring Jezebel among others. His choices are universally inspired, from the spoken word loops of Genesis P-Orridge and ghostly, mind-altering dancefloor hum of Los Angeles Death Cult, to the lo-fi techno of Ron Morelli, the acid-fired intensity of Volvox and the dust-encrusted industrial throb of full-throttle cuts by JK Flesh and Alberich. The double-vinyl set also includes a number of twisted modular loops and occasional forays into noise-soaked ambience. Impressive stuff all told.

Review: Crown Ruler Records co-founder Jeremy Spellacey is highly regarded within the crate-digging community, primarily for his ability to sniff out copies of obscure - but, naturally, high quality - boogie-era disco records from Africa and the Caribbean. On this fine compilation, Spacetalk has offered the New Zealander the opportunity to showcase some of those finds, alongside a smattering of better-known favourites and more recent cuts (see Mike Fabulous's overlooked modern boogie gem "Wang East"). Predictably, Spellacey has delivered the goods, serving up humid, exotic and loved-up gems galore, including the fluttering brilliance of Stimela's "I Love You", the marimba-laden Balearic boogie of Feladey's "Forest Music" and Devon Russell's impeccable reggae-soul cover of Curtis Mayfield's "Move on Up".

  10. Mulamba - "Dashiki" (version instrumentale) (3:07)
Review: There's a slightly different feel to the latest instalment of the fantastic "Africa Airways" compilation series. While previous instalments have largely focused on heavy Afro-funk and Afro-soul, this fifth edition showcases material recorded during the disco and boogie era (1976-82). The ten included tracks are superb, with highlights including the fuzzy, Clavinet-driven thrills of "Sweet Sidney (Edit)" by Black Bells Group, the heavy grooves and dancing synth lines of Gyedu Blay Ambolley's "Highlife", the spacey Afro-boogie badness of Fotso's "French Girl" and the flash-fried disco-funk celebration that is Jide Obe's spacey, Moog-sporting "Too Young". As the old cliche goes, this is all killer and no filler.

Review: Just under two years after launching in a blaze of modular noise and out-there electronics, Athens-based label Pi Electronics has decided to set up a new offshoot, PEVA, to handle the organisation's first compilation, Variable. They say the idea is to bring together unheard tracks from label artists old and new, with additional contributions from lesser-known local artists and higher profile guest stars. The nine tracks are, by and large, forthright and intense, with highlights including the clanking, acid-flecked industrial techno of JK Flesh's "Chelmsley Wood", the buzz-saw guitars and motorik machine drums of 3.14's "GBNR17", the extreme techno filth of "Spinner" by DAS and the fuzzy, razor-sharp electro heaviness of Damcase's "INKL Rules".
