Review: Having delivered a string of loosely themed collections of extended mixes and 12" versions from the 1980s, the long-running NOW compilation strand has launched a new series focusing on music released in specific years across the decade. 1980, the inaugural collection, is relatively light on pop, 'alternative' and new wave extended mixes (though OMD, Spandau Ballet, Sparks and UB40 all appear), but big on soaring disco hits, crossover club classics and chart-bothering dance numbers from the dawn of the decade of Thatcher and Reagan. Review: Founded in 1966 by Joel Gibson (a.k.a. Joe Gibbs) at his radio and TV repair shop on Beeston Street in Kingston, Jamaica, Amalgamated became one of the fastest-rising labels in correlation with the uprising of Rocksteady music. Their 'Jackpot Of Hits' compilation was originally released three years into the label's existence in 1969, whereby the the compilation was named after one of the label's most hard-hitting 7"s by The Pioneers, 'Jackpot'. Further contributions in the realms of ska, rocksteady and reggae come from Stranger Cole, The Pioneers, and Cool Sticky.

Review: Now's ongoing Yearbook series has reached 1973, a 12-month period in which saw an Oil Crisis, the opening of the World Trade Center in New York, and the withdrawal of US troops from Vietnam. Musically, as the four-disc set proves, pop was being pulled in different directions, with new stars emerging (David Bowie, Elton John, Roxy Music, David Essex and various members of the Osmond family) former 'Fabs' settling into their new solo careers (John Lennon, Paul Wings), Glam rock increasing in popularity (Mud, Sweet, Wizzard, T-Rex, Slade), and soul beginning to evolve into disco (the Spinners, Michael Jackson, the O'Jays, Diana Ross, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes). Review: If you didn't catch The Summer of Soul on the big screen then we're really, truly, very sorry indeed. The documentary was one of the most fascinating and evocative, not to mention poignant box office releases of the immediate post-pandemic lockdown period, and in our opinion is up there with the best non-fiction flicks we've ever seen.
Centring on the Harlem Cultural Festival, which took place over successive weekends in 1969, it tells the story of how this Black-run, and predominantly Black-billed event welcomed hundreds of thousands and hosted groundbreaking performances, but was quickly forgotten and lost in the shadows of the much more mythologised and predominantly white Woodstock, which took place at the same time. The long-overdue reappraisal is a musical feast, with great archive footage of numerous greats, and asks serious questions about who owns and decides on which narratives survive, while this album offers a fantastic overview of the sounds and names involved.

Review: Arther Baker's Dance Masters series continues, as the spotlight turns to another remix legend: one of the originators of the form, John Luongo. Regarded as one of the most influential DJs and mixers of his day, Luongo's many credits include remixes of Jackie Moore's 'This Time Baby', 'Vertigo / Relight My Fire' by Dan Hartman and Patti Labelle's 'Music Is My Way Of Life'.
