Review: Terry Hall was of course part of the Fun Boy Three in the late 70s and early 80s, but come '83 and after their Us tour that year he left and swiftly moved on to his next outfit, The Colourfield. It saw him working with former 2Tone label associates Toby Lyons and Karl Shale and their self-titled debut single saw them launch to immediate acclaim on cult UK TV show The Tube. Their next single 'Take' was just as big and in 1985 came their debut album with further hits 'Thinking of You', 'Castles In The Air' and later on some standout and standalone singles 'I Can't Get Enough of You Baby' and 'Things Could Be Beautiful.' All those and more are collected here.

Review: Since 2019, Fleetwood Mac has used Record Store Day to deliver "alternate" versions of the band's most famous albums. These are comprised of demos, early recordings and alternative mixes from the period that have laid dormant in the archives for decades.
This box set - which weirdly drops just as the band's Christine McVie is widely mourned - brings together these 'alternative' albums - the bluesy 'Fleetwood Mac', gazillion-seller 'Rumours', the rambling and epic 'Tusk', 'Mirage' and 80s power-pop-goes-AOR masterpiece 'Tango In The Night' - alongside a disc of rare live recordings of various fan favourites. As you'd expect, many of the versions are either stripped-back, laidback or more acoustic, though there are some genuinely revelatory alternative arrangements -not least an even deeper, warmer and dream-like early take on 'Mystified' whose effects-laden drums are mesmerising.

Review: Total were one of the greatest of the mid-90s r&b groups, packing an edge to match the sweetness of their voices. As a core part of Puffy and Biggie's Bad Boy stable, they delivered just two albums but both stand tall as the best fusion of golden era hip-hop production and honey-coated soul. Their self-titled debut was preceded by the eternal 'Can't You See', which carried a heavy feature from Biggie and made sure everyone was listening, but of course there's so much more to the album than the one major hit. From the obligatory interludes and skits to the baby-making ballads onto the fiercer material, Total were the real deal, and this reissue is long overdue.

Review: The third full-length from experimentalist punk/hip-hop trio Death Grips originally arrived in 2013, just a mere year on from their exceptionally warped debut LP The Money Store and its equally depraved sophomore follow up No Love Deep Web. Made up of math-rock drummer extraordinaire Zach Hill, programmer and synth mangler Andy Morin, and of course the confrontational MC Ride; Government Plates proved the collective were seemingly unable to artistically sit still, while refusing to exude a modicum of stagnation in their prolific early days. Celebrating its ten year anniversary, while just finishing up a chaotic headline set at this year's Outbreak Fest held in Manchester, the mystique and allure of Death Grips has only continued to swell with time, and this overlooked gem (as it falls between two of their most quintessential projects) couldn't be more in need of vital appreciation and reappraisal.

Review: Given the quality of Sons of Kemet's previous albums, hopes are naturally sky-high for the Shabaka Hutchings'-helmed quartet's first full-length excursion since 2018's Mercury Music Prize-nominated Your Queen is a Reptile. Happily, we can confirm that Black to the Future delivers - and then some. The band's most politically charged release to date, it's as energetic, intense, righteous and angry as you'd expect, offering a take on jazz that's expressive, percussively heavy and full of primal, guttural saxophone squeals courtesy of Hutchings. The series encompasses out of print and much in demand UK dub reggae albums from the late 1970s and early 1980s, all highlighting crucial early production work from the mixing desk of Adrian Sherwood. The band's post-reformation, 2023 album Hostile Environment, is thrown in for good measure. Review: Dutch artist Sander van Dijck is the man behind the San Holo, and someone who is known for joining the dots between electronic and indie music. He does that again here on a bumper 20 track album that explores analogue sounds, soft vocals and some mature alt-rock sojourns. It is a grown up album and fine follow up to his romantic 2018 debut Album1 with some of the same lush chord work but more sophisticated structures. Richly emotional but never sentimental, the artist says it is largely an album that address the feelings one has in the aftermath of a relationship.
