Saison V1 (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: NFSEV 001. Rel: 29 Jun 20
Disco/Nu-Disco
  1. Cut The Gas (5:26)
  2. Wax On Wax Off (6:10)
  3. Top Bunk Boogie (6:11)
  4. What Are We Gonna Do (7:16)
Review: North London deep house dons Saison are back on No Fuss Records with some sumptuous, discofied grooves that strike the perfect balance between heads-down, no-nonsense dance music and warm musicality. "Cut The Gas" rides on plenty of artfully chopped up disco licks, arranged, filtered and dropped in all the right places. "Wax On Wax Off" has a rich synth palette at its heart, clearly sporting a little Italo flavour in its bones with the smatterings of vocoder and throbbing arpeggios nestled amongst the more organic ingredients. "Top Bunk Boogie" and "What Are We Gonna Do" keep the pressure up on the B side, with the party energy in full force across both tracks and maintaining the same tasteful approach to the source material.

  1. Those Kicks (5:11)

  3. Feel It (5:28)
  4. Boogie Man (4:35)
Review: Fresh from a quietly impressive outing on Cardiology, John "Freak D" Devecchis dons the Owl alias once more and offers up another must-check selection of re-edits and reworks. HE begins by cannily rearranging, tightening up and beefing up a flash-fried slab of later James Brown style funk-rock (the brilliantly bluesy, housed-up "Those Kicks"), before turning his attention to a righteous chunk of what sounds like AOR disco/deep disco-funk fusion ("Chance"). "Feel The Power" is a bouncy, piano-sporting revision of what sounds like a late '80s New York house gem, while title track "Boogie Man" is a subtle, house style remake of a jaunty, honky-tonk style rhythm and blues number.

  1. H3misphere (7:37)
  2. Wergles (6:39)
  3. H3misphere (Sit remix) (8:32)
Review: Canadian maestro Jay Tripwire is a long time underground stalwart with countless gold-dust releases to his name, and still the modest artist keeps pushing on with more stellar tech house immersion heaters. Here he's been invited to Euphoria for an EP that burrows into the most shadowy corners of his sound. "H3misphere" is a spooky jam driven by a shuffling groove and offset with some dubby flourishes - a perfectly balanced workout for the club with a seductive air of mystery lingering around the rhythm section. "Werqles" is a lighter affair, but it's no slouch in the freaky department as a plethora of disembodied machine wriggles ping around the crisp 4/4 throwdown. The whole B-side is given over to SIT's "Remux" of "H3misphere", which holds the groove down in a more linear manner but keeps that chilling atmosphere intact just behind the beats.

  3. Halfway (5:57)
  4. Just Let Me Go (5:58)
Review: Donnell Knox and Mark Hawkins, better known as D-Knox and Marquis Hawkes respectfully, team up for a collaborative EP on Sonic Mind that speaks to their respective roots in underground techno reaching back to the 90s. "Kalamazoo" is a tough and clattering jacker with out-of-phase organ lines to send your mind spinning, while "Not The DX100" brings things front and centre for a comparatively direct, acidic workout. "Halfway" ramps up the melodic content as a displaced vocal celebrates Kalamazoo's location between Chicago and Detroit, and then "Just Let Me Go" completes the set with a tough and bumping vocal house cut.

Review: Having spent the last couple of years establishing the Tessellate label via fine EPs from the likes of Aleksandir and Armless Kid, imprint co-founders Max van Dijk and Oli Hiam have decided the time is right to debut their new production project, The Trip. "Wet Your Whistle" is certainly a confident and quietly impressive debut, with the title track adding a little intergalactic futurism and acid-flecked psychedelia to a retro-futurist deep house groove. They continue to join the dots between the eras on "Miss The Point", where glitchy tech-house style electronics and acid flashes leap above a chunky groove and bold organ stabs. The flipside boasts two versions of "Friend Request": their own bouncy, bass-heavy, skipping and acid-flecked "Sax Mix", and the weighty, off-planet tech-house flex of the Mbius rework.

Review: New gen dubsmith Sabab is making a serious impression with his current slew of breakthrough Artikal releases. First came the crucial "Guidance" EP in November 2019, then came the equally essential "New Dawn" 12" in May 2020. Now, our heads fully turned and all eyes locked, comes another massive EP: "System Skank" takes us back to the original science while "Piercing White Light" is the late night bulldozer of the bunch. Meanwhile on the B: "Fittest Of The Fittest" flips between a big sample splash and the sizzliest bassline you'll find all month while "Unity" closes on a deep space dub voyage, skittering breaks breezing in the background and all. Fit.

Review: The Allergies' debut album introduced the world to the way they effortlessly fuse funk, soul, disco, hip-hop and breaks into dancefloor-ready nuggets of ear candy. Taking classic sounds and reshaping them for the modern age is the signature that won them plaudits across the globe. Not ones to rest on their laurels, it hasn't taken long for them to deliver more of the goods on their second full-length album. As well as taking the successful formula of the first record and expanding on their sound, the band enlisted two giants of underground hip-hop to bless mics on the album as well. After a hugely successful collaboration on their debut LP, once again the dynamic lyricism and production skills of the inimitable Andy Cooper (Ugly Duckling) are present and correct in this new collection.

Review: Graded, Regraded and now Intergraded? Label chief Midland has stated that it is a new label intended to focus on releasing music by new artists; whether unknown, emerging or established but working under different aliases. For the sixth release, we have Em and Stav. Well established in the vanguard of Bristol and beyond's electronic music scene, both individually in their own right and as a duo, they are partners in real life and behind the decks. Great stuff on this one: from the hypnotic and bass-driven broken beat of "Afterglow", to the soulful futurist electro of "Inner Space" and the emotive off-kilter IDM of B-side cut "Atmospheric Love" - this is a terrific effort from the promising pair.

Review: After spending much of the last few years exploring forthright, mind-altering techno sounds under his given name, Thomas P Heckmann has recently started offering up new material from his Electro Nation project - an exploration of the potential of the electro form that was most active in the 1990s. He begins his second new EP of the year (there have also been some reissues) with the sharp, squelch-along club electro buzz of "Dope Head", before beefing up the beats and reaching for minor key melodies on the intergalactic pop of "Sucker Beat". Elsewhere, Heckmann successfully wraps warehouse-ready house stabs around bustling acid bass and snappy electro drums on "Virus", while closing cut "Juicy Beast" is a Fairlight stab-sporting sprint through NYC freestyle/early '80s electro fusion.

Review: Tastemaking US jazz label International Anthem serves up this special 7" from Angel Bat Dawid in response to Emma Warren's 2019 book "Make Some Space", which told the story of London DIY music space Total Refreshment Centre. Featuring clarinets, keys and drum machines, both tracks are hugely conversational, with emotional pain and power ebbing and flowing through both originals pieces. A-side "Transition East" overflows with ideas and narrative while "No Space For Us" is more cautious and subdued, but both leave a lasting impact. The track features Angel with Ben LaMar Gay and Brazilian talents Edbrass Brasil, Romulo Alexis, Tadeu Mascarenhas, Nancy Viegas and Germano Estacio.

Review: German beat mutant Acid Lab dents the discogs on provocative burgeoning imprint AGN7 with four cavernous beasts. All flexing around the Samurai/Metalheadz axis in terms of space and palette, each cut hits hard with authenticity. "Secret Weapon" hits like it's 97 but on a halftime flex. "Unleash" is a savage Rupture level piece of breakbeat chaos. "Shadow Recruit" goes on some cosmic 160 Tipper style elastic bass funk while "Before The Storm" takes you right into it eye then blasts you out with a creepy breakbeat hurricane. Serious tackle, this.

Review: It would be fair to say that Mr Fingers 2016 is something of an event release, at least for those who love deep house. While Larry Heard has kept busy - largely with remixes and reissues - this marks the first 12" release under his most famous moniker for over a decade. He begins in contemplative mood, fusing tumbling music box melodies, creepy electronics and nagging 303 lines on "Outar Acid", before laying down some typically blissful, atmospheric deep house on the wondrous "Qwazars". Flip for "Nodyahead", an effortless mixture of heavy dub-house bottom end, African-influenced percussion and moody late night refrains, and the ultra-deep, piano-laden bliss of "Aether".

Review: Jackmate, the king of off-kilter house, makes a welcome addition to Matthew Herbert's Accidental catalogue - matter of fact his style is right at home! The 'Werk' EP is the Philpot co-chief's first release in six years and he's in fine form as always. From the dry and disjointed shuffle of the title track, to the smooth and sensual deepness of B-side cut "Skeletones" - a Moodymann-ish cut which is perfect mood music for the warm-up or afterhours alike. Closing out the EP is something much more offbeat for the Sunday afternoon slot - the boppy summertime groove of "The Clarinettes' which like its namesake has some irresistible wind instrument action to get you on your feet and shaking your behind.

Review: Since she last released some original music, Ikonika has been through a lot, including - in her own words - "pregnancy, depression and therapy". It's undoubtedly great to have her back in business, not least because "Bodies" offers a reminder of her undoubted musical talents. She begins with the spacey, bass-heavy slipped electro attractiveness of "Your Body", before opting for even bolder bass, more futuristic electronic motifs and broken beats on the arguably even better "Nobody". Turn to the flipside for the punchy, machine-gun breaks, drowsy chords and warped analogue riffs of "What Kinda Pain Are We Talking About", as well as the snappy, all-action electro/breakbeat fusion of ghostly and intergalactic closing cut "Bodied (Roller Mix)", the EP's most sweaty and percussive moment.

On the 'Cardano' EP you can sure bet that it is jam packed with glassy-eyed and bittersweet dancefloor narratives, as evident on the sublime title A side title track. Soothing melodies, warm bass and subtle rhythms underpin this melodic deep house journey throughout. On the flip, we have two more numbers aimed squarely at the Sunday morning dancefloor in the form of "Together" and "Inhale", the latter in particular will take you into the exotic with its chilled-out summertime island vibes.

Here he steps up for "Giving Thanks & Praises" along with the equally revered Roberto Sanchez on the riddim and dub. This is a big tune with metallic chords hanging in the air over a bubbly, tropical beat that is filled with warmth and soul. The tooting horns bring that chest beating vibe and ensure your audience will be up on their toes. The dub strips things back to focus on the essential drums.

Review: Soul Central responsible for the anthemic house version of 'Strings of Life' needs no introduction. Their latest Pimp Life EP is a limited edition four-track vinyl that fluidly introduces the Electric Shrine imprint. The EP features a mix of gritty, jazzy, soulful and funk-filled cuts that are interplayed with raw interviews from behind bars. Soul Central keeps it deep and sleazy whilst delivering the real deal. 'Late Night Cruising' chronicles the journey of a Bluesman, departing with the funkiest of grooves and solid sub-bass becoming the final destination.
'Just A Man' embeds the confessions from a convicted pimp dispersed with classic keys and dripped in Soul. Turning in a modern take on the deeper side of Disco. 'Bring It Home' is haze fuelled & reminiscent of the early US House scene. 'Chicago Lights' fuses 4/4, low slung Funk driven by a deeper dub vehicle.

Rude bass and sweaty arrangements warming up the party. "Once Is Enough" is a much sassier, slinkier affair with Kuntessa calling the shots well into the wee hours. This is the sweet and smoky side of the UKG scene, not least on the spacious and dubby "2step Re:re:refix" that kicks off the B-side. Mellow, moody and oh so smooth, but with bass pressure where it counts. Don't sleep on this one - it's guaranteed to fly out.

Review: ZamZam Sounds has been killing it of late, with Rider Shafique, Ishan Sound and Kahn's recent "When Shall We Rise" single arguably being one of their most potent releases yet. Here they continue that fine run of form via another must-check "45", this time via the artist formerly known as Deadboy, Al Wooton. A-side "Request" offers a deliciously contemporary take on steppers/dub fusion, with ricocheting electronics, humid aural textures and echoing vocal snippets jumping around above a killer bassline and bustling drums. He continues on a similar theme with "Philo", which is the kind of weighty, club-ready dub excursion that would sit well in many house and techno sets.
