Review: The Go Finger label has been digging into the undergrowth of synthwave sounds and deviant electro for a few years now, more recently graduating from the tape scene to put out EPs of leftfield electronic adventures on wax. This EP in particular is quite something, calling on the vintage talents of Das Ding in all their eerie, warped, pulsing, analogue refinement. "Conun Drum" is a curiously playful trip through noirish cityscapes by way of strobing lead lines and militaristic machine beats, while "Life Is A Tool In The Hands Of Strangers" takes a more uptempo approach without losing the bombast of their melodic arrangements. Dutch electro champ DJ Overdose steps up for the B side, dropping the overcast and creeping "I See No Stars At Night" and the dishevelled robot beatdown "Potje Freaken".

Review: Nat Wendell launches the Depth Of My Soul label with a confident slab of deepness that should draw plenty of heat on the peaks and troughs of the house music landscape. "The Way" is a crisply produced pumper, revolving around a seductive little lead line and the haunting titular vocal hook - there's a whiff of tech in the make up of the track, but the groove is all house. "Theoretics" follows down a similar path, keeping things moody and mechanical without disposing of the funk, and then it's down to "Release Your Soul" to bring a little light into proceedings with some mellow keys and dubby flourishes.

Review: Berlin-based Miami man David Gtronic has been busy these past few years, working closely with Randall M, Chad Andrew, Dudley Strangeways and many more besides. He's going it alone with this inaugural release for Black Wood, relishing the opportunity to explore his craft across three original productions. "Ardl Dub" is a dense, shuffling minimal house production primed for working into a long and flowing set, while "Lexiwedin" showcases a more reflective side to the producer with sweeping synth tones and a whisper of electro worked into the rhythms. "Sequence" takes the minimal vibe to the next level, folding dubby subtleties into the mix to great effect. Dan Farserelli then steps up with a remix that injects a little boompty bass into the track for a wholly different, dancefloor friendly kind of jam.

Review: Bobby Pleasure's Needs label continues to gather steam behind a message of togetherness, raising money for worth causes and trying to help those less fortunate in society. On this third instalment Lord Of The Isles leads the way with a typically romantic swoon of analogue bass and gorgeous 80s synth strings, while Mehmet Aslan lays down an earthly prowler powered by organic instrumentation. "Trust The Mountain" introduces Petwo Evans with a daring strain of broken electronica heavy on the crackling signal processing. Bartellow's "1001 (Skrillex Theme)" is a craft machine disco workout, and then N-Gynn takes things tropical with the exotic tones and bold drum machine hits of "Jumanji".

Review: Minuendo keep things interesting on this latest various artists 12", primarily focusing on Owen Jay and Brian James on the A side for two tracks of adventurous experimentation on the wild frontier of minimal house music. The wobbly synth running through "Niko's Groove" is a real head turner, while "Imagery" nudges the grand tradition of dub house into a new pocket of ambience that draws you in immediately. There's a lovely, classic deep house joint from Untitled called "Seafood", and then Blue Vulva & The Electronic Crooner completely flip the script on the B2 with rowdy acid burner "Vulbitch Bazaar".

Review: The next release on Brazil's ever-promising disco steamer Gop Tun comes from Renato Cohen. Cohen has been an infrequent mainstay of Brazilian dance music for a long time now, most recently appearing on Kling Klong, Tronic and 100% Pure. His releases may not come around every day, but he makes them count when they do. "Dynadisco" is a spaced out slow burner with a looped up groove and simmering pads building towards a powerful, funk-fuelled bass drop. "Party Jam" takes a lighter approach, keeping the samples sprightly and even sprinkling a little acid magic into the tune. It gives Whatever/Whatever plenty to be working on their remix, which spreads across the B side in a fit of electro-disco finery.

As is customary with UMHS releases, the conventions of house and techno are masked by a veil of mystery, where billowing pads and crooked rhythms dig past common or garden variety club tracks to offer something more sublime. From the slender, shimmering "Unaware" to the weighty thrum of "Excessive, Surely" and on to the delicately poised "I Don't Wanna Wanna Feel", Martinou proves himself to be entirely in tune with the hidden depths of the label.

Review: Master of minimal wave sonics Alessandro Parisi has spread his full-bodied synth wares around such esteemed labels as Slow Motion, Charlois, Giallo Disco, Lux Rec and more besides, and now he slides up to Vivod with an EP of noirish fantasies you'll be hard pushed to resist. "Crossfire" is the more uptempo cut, but "Ravens" paints a more vivid picture of retro-fetishistic club music in dangerous places. "Praying Sages" goes all out on the soundtrack vibe, but not before it's been remixed by Mick Wills, who casually threads a driving techno undercarriage into the track to create a strangely transcendental slab of cathedral-ready body music.

Now he's pulled together a strong cast of cats to offer up remixes of key album tracks, with scintillating results. Davis Jr's heady atmosphere is maintained in all of the versions, from Marcel Vogel's funky broken beat treatment on "99 Candles" to the woozy bump of the Teflon Dons' version of "This Weekend". Review: Jonny 5 can rightly be considered a mainstay of Bahnsteig 23 now, as he returns to the label for the third time. It seems that the main source of inspiration for this latest opus from the intermittent producer has been the Indian sub continent, and he's channeled those vibes into three wild and wicked tracks for the weird dance party. "Bengali Dub" channels the proto electro vibes of 80s synth pop and shoots it through with some illustrious sample drops, while "Simha" works more like a particularly bold edit loping in a polyrhythmic fashion that will have the floor hopping like mad to keep up. "Tum Tum" turns up the heat on the B side with a deadly electronic revision of an Indian classic.

Review: Having built its name on various artist releases featuring old and new artists, Contort Yourself is branching out with a new series that focuses on one contemporary act per release. In this instance it's Coletivo Vandalismo getting some much-deserved attention. The Portuguese industrial punk outfit have a visceral sound that favours noise and distortion, but most importantly they know how to wield these sonic tools for maximum impact. The snarl of the synths and the crunch of the drums on "Hostages Of Society" could easily be too much in the wrong hands, but here the errant tones find their own space in the mix, making the impact of the track all the more on-point.

Review: Tom Dicicco is best known for his stern techno output, so it's intriguing to seem him donning a new alias, Veyg, and exploring a new sound palette. As with the last Veyg 12", the tone here is somewhere around the slower tempo, discoid acid end of the spectrum, and he's made the sound his own. "My Sweet Soul" is a dusty affair with squashed drums and looped up bongos rubbing up against trippy globules of lysergic monosynth action. "When They Fall" is a downcast electro track for rainy Sundays, while "These Feelings" waits for the clouds to break and dances on the damp lawn with no shoes on. "West Of The Sun" is the most adventurous offering on the 12", escaping the 4/4 thud and twirling in an off-grid stylee with ample dub FX tugging the melodic parts around in a mellifluous haze of experimentation.

Review: Mark Ambrose doubles up on his appearance on Was/Is with this strident bout of deep end dwellers, kicking off in style with the charged up strut and punchy mono bass of "Makossa (mix 1)," making a point of stepping into a more peak time sound. "Makossa (mix 2)" takes things in a more bugging direction, but there's still plenty of pressure to be felt in the wriggling low end mess and nagging hi hats. The Teakup mix of "Makossa" is a devilish broken beat track, and then "Wagamama" slips in a loopy melodic hook and lets a firm but freaky slice of techno roll out underneath.

Review: Bologna's NAS1 lands on his hometown's Sorry For This label, coming through with four magnificent house experiments that enter the scene from left of field. "Vino Cheenese" hardly boasts any beats except for a hazy blur of percussion, while "Ag Pini" sounds like a deep house cut that's been diluted in heavy amounts of aqueous FX, and "The Springer" comes in hard with a stomping blockade of harsh acid distortions. Surprise remix action from Detroit's mighty Marcellus Pittman features on the flip, with the veteran house solider dropping a remix of "Revolution", ending up with a convoluted house tune that manages to bring out the funk amid the darkness in its path. Recommended!

Review: Over the course of his career, Max Graef has proved to be rather adaptable, variously turning his hand to dusty deep house, revivalist jazz-funk, drowsy hip-hop beats and nu-jazz. On this EP he touches on many of those styles, but it's the angular, techno-influenced analogue electronics, Motor City chords and shuffling beats of opener "Thrillhouse & Bonus Beat" that really sets the pulse racing. Graef's obsession with raw, lo-fi sounds is further explored on "2 Cool 4 U", which sounds like a cross between tropical house, early UK bleep and wayward techno, while closer "Bunds" sees him wrap deep space electronics around a sparse, pitched-up, high-register drum machine beat. As for the rest of the EP, it's deep, dusty, jazzy and really rather good.

The artists responsible, Broccoli Brothers vs Righteous Men, hailed from Germany and were trying to emulate Mike Dunn. "Catch It (Calm Manoeuvre)" is a spaced out deep house track with all the gritty impact of a classic jam, while "Catch It (Jam)" gets decidedly rowdy with its hefty kick, jacked up swing and wonky bassline. On the B side "Ruhrschnellweg (Last Exit Stahlhausen Mix)" brings a little Detroit flavour into the mix with spectacular, uplifting results.

While the ingredients (drum machines, errant synths) may be familiar, the patterns and shapes are not. An icy dread lingers over the likes of "Vibra" with its uneasy reverb space and subtly unsettling undertones, but this is also utterly seductive dance music too. "Ritmo" in particular has a truly meditative quality to it that strikes even deeper thanks to the tense, percussion-led atmosphere. "Melodica" pours a little more techno propulsion into the mix, highlighting the compatability Adiel's creations have with more linear forms of drum machine science.

There's a rough n' ready MPC vibe to the break that courses its way through "The Guitar," providing a sturdy basis for the noodling titular axe cartwheeling its way across the mix. Now it is over to the Belarus based disco DJ Funkyjaws who serves up two irresistible jams on Vol 8 of the series. On the A side, we have the soulful and life affirming African boogie of "Them & Us". We have not heard the original but it sounds pretty seamless to us: a respectful edit indeed. On the flip, we have one seriously mad boogie-down jam in the form of "Peasant Dance" which is a truly exotic affair from god knows where! Accordions, wah-wah guitar and some super string arrangements clash wonderfully. This may sound like an unholy mixture but this is exactly the kind of disco deviance that truly floats our boat! He's starting this new mission in style with a single-sided, 15-minute long epic with Leonidas to send the dancefloor into a deep house rapture. There's a cosmic space flight narrative to get drawn into, a wealth of expressive sax playing, an extended meltdown, some well chosen shout outs to the pioneers, and a sweetly subdued roll out that feels very far from where the journey began, like all epic tracks should do. Review: Dokta has been seen lurking around 20:20 Vision with a curious take on that label's particular brand of house. That step to the left becomes more pronounced on this record, where Dokta gets to call on a wealth of live instrumentation to animate his sound. On "London Nights" he interweaves vocal, ambling keys and crooked basslines into a curious and utterly inspired cocktail of cool-headed pressure, which Jason Heath then simmers down to a purely instrumental refrain. Burnski goes to the other extreme and beefs the track up for a firm and functional ride, while Ralph Lawson dubs the track out and gives it a low slung swagger.

There's some wobbly boogie to enjoy on "Mango Messenger" and MOR grooves of the highest order on "Zoned For Fun" - it's a record swimming in smooth.

Drome Tapes EP1 (140 gram vinyl 12" + insert)

  2. DJ Zero One - "Gee Lee"
  3. Syndrome - "Rubbish Two"
  4. V-Room - "X-Centrik"
  5. Paradize - "Infected By C.O."
Review: Tabernacle aren't as known for their reissue work, but here they've made an exception to shine a light on a truly astounding hidden gem lost in the dry ice haze of the early 90s. Phuture Classical Appendix A originally came out on cassette in 1992 on Drome Tapes in the Netherlands, showcasing a low key selection of artists exploring the limits of deep, dark techno and house. Now spread across three 12" releases, these treasured curios now get the widespread release they deserve, leading in with the haunting self-titled track from Paradize Disowned before the gritty techno throb of "Gee Lee" by DJ Zero One. Considered in their execution and immensely evocative of the underbelly of early rave culture, these releases are ones that discerning old-skool heads will not want to miss.

Alfred Tailor (red transparent vinyl 140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: UNTLDPRO 002. Rel: 18 May 15
Minimal/Tech House
  1. Alfred Tailor (original mix) (10:10)
  2. Torino Soul (original mix) (4:45)
  3. Alfred Tailor (Laurine Frost remix) (11:21)
Review: The second of the UNTLD Protagonist Series, by Furz, savours the spirit of Alfred Tailor, an influential figure in the development of the bright young artist, whose first EP is strong and smooth, with raw energy, sultry and primal. The title track is remixed by Laurine Frost, who inspired by the South American hypnosis of the artist, takes it further, developing the dialogue and deepening the percussive structure, whilst maintaining the mystique and spirit of Alfred Tailor. The second original work on the record, entitled 'Torino Soul' is an ode to the automobile of Alfred Tailor, it opens serenely as if racing through the valleys of Cordoba's horizon, scenery rushing by on a hot day. Amidst this, the mechanical metal of the engine revolves in it place, as we are rushed forward, and the voice heard a memory both of the machine and the man, Alfred Tailor.

Ben Sims pres Tribology Sampler 5 (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: MachineSampler 005. Rel: 10 Dec 18
Techno
  1. Marcel Fengler - "Cortex" (5:30)
  2. Alienata - "The 8th Passenger" (6:00)
  3. James Ruskin - "TZR" (5:06)
  4. Tripeo - "Sequoia" (5:50)
Review: It's quite remarkable just how much quality Ben Sims has managed to pack into the Tribology mix and its accompanying series of vinyl samplers. The fifth round shows no signs of going soft as it leads in with the sledgehammer thump of Marcel Fengler's "Cortex", showing the Berghain resident to be on formidable form. Alienata shakes things up with the slick yet sinister electro strains of "The 8th Passenger", and James Ruskin lands some heavy blows with the delirious synth cycles of "TZR". Psyk finishes things off in his signature style, looping up some nervy blips and bleeps around a restrained set of drums for the ultimate in techno hypnotism.

Deep House
  1. Polyphonic Spree (7:56)
  2. Glow On (8:20)
  3. Munk Funk (5:45)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Mount Liberation Unlimited's debut 12" on Junk Yard Connections, Astro Travelling Life, has become one of the most in-demand deep house releases of 2014. A year on, they finally deliver a follow-up, this time on Superconscious Records. All three tracks primarily succeed due to their blend of rough analogue elements - crusty drum machine hits, tape hiss, and so on - and the kind of dreamy, stargazing chords and melodies that have always been a hall mark of classic deep house. It's the Detroit techno influenced "Polyphonic Spree" - all cymbal-heavy shuffle, stretched-out chords and funky synthesizers - that arguably stands out, though it's a tough call given the high quality threshold throughout.
