Slipping Into Darkness
Cat: HS 22. Rel: 02 Dec 20
Slipping Into Darkness (2:58)
Dubing Into Darkness (Jeh Jeh mix) (3:17)
Review: Hornin' Sounds has been on fire of late and their latest offering is another essential one. Both tunes explore deep dark funk roots from the mid 70s, and have both been produced by U.K. wizard Clem Bushay with The Cimarons on fire as the backing band. Carl Bert provides the vocals, which are buttery smooth and heartfelt as he muses on slipping into darkness over acoustic guitar riffs and rolling ridders. A fine dubs mix by Jeh Jeh is liquid and bottomless. As usual the French label have promised (threatened?) that there will be no reissues of this one, so move fast, dub lovers.

Johnny Clarke - "Babylon" (Dancehall mix) (4:34)
Johnny Clarke - "Babylon" (dub) (4:06)
Earth & Stone - "False Ruler" (3:47)
Review: Johnny Clarke and Earth & Stone cooked up some real magic with 'Babylon'. It's a sumptuous sound that offers a symbolic representation of societal oppression and injustice. With Johnny Clarke's haunting vocals and Earth & Stone's mesmerising rhythms, the tune becomes a poignant commentary on the struggles of the marginalised and the quest for freedom. Through those lyrics and hypnotic melodies, it confronts issues of systemic inequality and political corruption, urging people to rise against oppression. As such it is anther great tune that proves the enduring relevance of reggae as a voice for the oppressed.

Suffering
Cat: 333010. Rel: 06 Jul 23
Suffering (3:14)
Timba Version (3:19)
Review: This classic wedge of roots originally came back in 1977 but has a distinctly futuristic edge even now. The license for the reissue comes from Jasaro's Everand Thompson which will be great news to collectors as currently an original of this, even though no one can be found on second-hand markets, will cost you the best part of three hundred quid. Everand Thompson and Jasaro really struck gold with 'Suffering' which pairs fat dub and tweaked synth energy with a meaningful and pained vocal. The Simba version fleshes out the heavy riddim with more effects and extra vocals.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged but otherwise in excellent condition***

Isle Of Jura always deals in left-of-centre sounds from the vast dub universe. This drop from Sonia Whittingham originally came back in 1988 and is a real clean lovers rock gem. Because of that, it's a much sought-after 12" that is often listed for over 100 quid on second-hand sites. This reissue allows you to swerve all that and as well as the original, with its sweet-as-you-like vocal and clean digital synths. Flip it over for the Love Dub Band's more heady and stoner-style 'Sweet Dub.'
