  1. Payoh Soulrebel - "When I Found U" (From Valmeria Roots Vol 2) (3:28)
  2. Yeyo Perez - "Me Nah Trust Dem" (From Valmeria Roots Vol 2) (3:26)
Review: Four years ago, One By One Records founder Baay Selectah offered up Valmeria Roots Volume 2, a digital mixtape based on his interpretations of classic roots reggae riddims from the past. It included two new songs based on Coxsone Dodd's legendary 'Breaking Up' riddim, which was first heard on an Alton Ellis single in 1969 and has been repurposed by producers ever since. This limited-edition 7" single features both of Bay Selectah's 2016 tributes: 'When I Found You', featuring toaster style rap vocals from Payoh SoulRebel, and 'Me Nah Trust Dem', which boasts a wonderfully soulful lead vocal from fellow Valmeria Roots crewmember Yeyoh Perez's more soulful and impassioned 'Me Nah Trust Dem'.

Cat: REDE 017. Rel: 26 Aug 20
  1. A Change Is Gonna Come (4:23)
  2. A Change Is Gonna Come (instrumental) (4:23)
Review: Youthsayers is a collective of talented artist from South London - and here they step up to the plate with what is a superb rework of Sam Cooke's classic protest song, "A Change Is Gonna Come." Plenty has been done to all aspects of the track, from the great horn section to the bubbling rhythm section. The vocal is reggae to its core, but with all the soul needed to really connect. This tune suggest they will be big stars of the future and are certainly an outfit to watch. Amazingly, the whole thing was recorded individually at home during lockdown.

Review: A few years ago, West African music obsessive and Philophon label boss Max Weissenfeldt decided to make some roots reggae with his friend and fellow drummer Josie Coppola. Yet this would be no regular reggae, as they'd be working on songs by Ghanaian artist Y-Bayani (real name Yusef Hussain). Since then, the project has developed further with the addition of a second lead singer, Baby Naa (Naomi Addy), a clutch of talented musicians and a Ghanaian choir. The result is this debut album, a wonderfully hazy, sun-kissed shuffle that does a brilliant job in putting a new, Afro-centric spin on Jamaican roots reggae. The riddims are strong, the multi-lingual vocals superb, the musicianship spot on and the production authentically warm and weighty. In other words, it's an unlikely gem.
