Universal Love

Universal Love (4:15)
Universal Dub (4:10)
Review: Lewis Bennett is a fine producer who has a knowing following and here, for the third time now, he joins up with Burning Bug Records. This time it is alongside J.A. legends The Viceroys, who provide some super steamy and loved-up vocals over a spacious, roomy and atmospheric dub that is simple, economical yet effective, with some lush strings providing a melancholic hook. On the back side is an excellent dub that adds some low end heft and trips things out a little.

Review: During last year's lockdown in Italy, contemporary dub producer Paolo Baldini was invited by Pressure Sounds to work on Bunny Lee's archive of recordings he made with singer Barry Brown during the mid-to-late 1970s. The results can now be heard on Praises, a set which adds a little more dub-wise spice to classic roots reggae cuts while retaining much of Lee's production and instrumentation. Brown's vocals - effortlessly soulful, hugely evocative and partially improvised - are simply superb, while Baldini's handling of Lee's riddims and musical arrangements is masterful. As a result, the assembled dubs, versions and vocal reworks sound faithful to the period in which they were recorded while adding subtle new touches and 21st century-ready low-end weight.

Justin Hinds & The Dominoes - "Carry Go Bring Come"
Duke Reid All Stars - "Soul Movement"
Review: Peckings salutes the great Justin Hinds - world-renowned as one of the foremost pioneers of ska and rocksteady - with a Treasure Isle showcase of six lesser-sung original vocal tracks, followed by dub or instrumental of each track on red vinyl. Standout among the bunch is the the new organ cut to 'Say Me Say', which to this day carries the torch as one of Hinds' best and pluckiest songs to be recorded with his backing band the Dominoes and first released on Duke Reid way back in 1970. It's exclusive gems like this that verify Peckings; one of the realest labels still out there doing it.

Review: Bad, Bad, Bad is a historical compilation that brings together the fantastic work of Clive Hunt, a roots and reggae producer from the 1970s and 1980s. Plenty of the guests helped bring him rightful acclaim and this collection has all the rare highlights with Bonny Gayle, The Abyssinians, Junior Murvin, Max Romeo and more all making the cut. Hunt himself also appears in his 'Lizzard' persona and as the lead singer of the In Crowd and next to that gem the iconic falsetto of Junior Murvin will always standout in any reggae collection.

Review: Acclaimed reggae and dub collective Inna de Yard reissue their 2021 album Family Affair, yet one more to lay down the skills and talents of this quasi-familial ensemble, consisting of both veterans and youngers from the same close-knit bloodline in Jamaica. Their specialism is recording acoustic versions of classic and original songs in a friendly, natural setting; this one's got 13 versions on it, with covers of Bob Marley and The Congos, and features such core family members as Cedric Myton and Kiddus I, albeit channelling a bittersweet intonation after the group lost four of its kin prior to release.

Review: Although he first entered a recording studio in the late 1960s, it wasn't until 1973, and the release of the Alvin 'G.G' Ranglin-produced single 'Love Is Overdue' that Gregory Isaacs career started to take off. The success of that record persuaded Ranglin to record an entire album with Isaacs, In Person, which became the now legendary reggae singer's debut full-length. This expanded edition of the album presents the album on disc one, alongside alternative dub versions and other singles Isaacs recorded with Ranglin during the period. Disc two, meanwhile, offers a celebration of Ranglin's other works of 1973 and '74 - Jamaican hit singles (and their corresponding dubs) which are largely lesser-known outside the Caribbean.

Review: As the digi sound crept into Jamaican music in the 80s, King Jammy's productions became an essential ingredient in the progression of dancehall, and this compilation highlights a solid 31 classics that prove the point. The hitlist is heavy, with the likes of Dennis Brown, Johnny Osbourne and Sugar Minott all heard singing over Jammy's sprightly riddims. What binds these tunes together is the message - the universal cry out against social injustice, which has always given roots reggae, dancehall, digi and more its power and urgency. There are too many essential tunes to count, so don't sweat it and simply stick it on.

Review: The legendary producer King Jammy rounded up 32 of his most masterful tunes for the CD version of this collection, Cries From the Youth, while nine of them make the cut on this vinyl version. His revolutionary super power sound reinvigorated reggae with fresh energy and charged up 80s dancehalls with all new vibes. He managed to shine a light on the new generation coming through on the shoulders of the 70s originators while also reminding the world about those early talents - Dennis Brown, Junior Delgado and Junior Murvin plus Admiral Tibet, Kentucky and Johnny Osbourne all feature.

King Tubby - "King Tubby In Fine Stile" (3:16)
Review: Digikiller Records, perhaps suggestive by the name, are keen purveyors of proper organic roots reggae. This new one comes as a collection of dub versions by Jamaican producer Ivan 'Lloydie Slim' Smith, and compiles 10 of his best and most rootsy originals - not only his own tracks but also versions of tracks by fellow legends, including Sparkes, The Upsetters, Solid Explosion Band, and King Tubby. With its advanced harmonics and emotive lilts, this one rightly forms part of the Record Smith Production series, which continues the work of Smith's eponymous label started in the early 1970s.

Review: Having previously delivered a box set dedicated to the early-to-mid 70s singles produced by legendary Jamaican studio don Niney The Observer, Doctor Bird has now moved on to the next stage of his career. This two-disc set focuses on seven-inch singles he produced and released on his Observer label in 1976 and 1977, supplementing vocal cuts with flipside alternate versions and his own 'riddim'-focused takes. It's a fine collection of often hard-to-find Jamaican reggae gems from a golden period in the country's musical culture, with headline-grabbing contributions from such scene staples as Gregory Isaacs, Horace Andy, Clint Eastwood, I-Roy, Big Youth, Junior Delgado and Bobby Ellis.

Review: While not as celebrated as some of his Jamaican contemporaries, Winston Holness AKA Niney The Observer was a hugely successful record producer. This excellent two-disc set does an excellent job in rounding up the best of his output between 1973 and '75, a period where he enjoyed countless hits at home and over in the UK. There's naturally plenty of goodness to be found amongst the 49 tracks on show, with cuts featuring now well-known Jamaican scene stars - think Junior Delgado, Delroy Wilson, Big Youth, Max Romeo, Junior Byles, Horace Andy, U-Roy and ska survivor Tommy McCook - being joined by more dubbed-out 'versions' (credited to his studio band The Observers') and local hits by artists whose fame rarely spread beyond the Caribbean (Winston Wright, Hubert Lee, Earth & Stone). In an indispensable introduction to one of Jamaica's finest producers of the 1970s.

Review: It's clear dub dynasties are a thing; you either have the magic Midas touch, or you don't. For some, talent runs in green, yellow and red blood. Addis Pablo is the son of legendary dub reggae pioneer Augustus Pablo, and here he releases his second solo LP, dedicated to the mythical House Of Levi, a fictional setting for one of Christ's many banquets. On the LP, pablo pens an ode to the poor, needy and devoted in dub, spewing forth some of the cleanest and bounciest melodica-bound dub we've heard all year so far.

Review: The "Disco Devil" series is a carefully curated selection of disco mixes that were laid down in the famous Black Ark Studio run by Lee "Scratch" Perry. It was a place of legendary magic, as this series shows on its fourth instalment. All the big dogs like The Upsetters, Augustus Pablo and Junior Murvin are present with their own distinctive takes on dub. Carlton Jackson also comes correct with his soul soothing "History" while a special 7" edit of Truth Fact & Correct's "Babylon Deh Pon Fire" is a rousing anthem for serious smoking sessions.

Review: 'Open The Gate' is a 1989 box set of Lee 'Scratch' Perry's most enduring productions, involvements and features until that date - most of which were laid down at his legendary yet ramshackle recording studio Black Ark. These were the tunes that cemented Perry's name as an oddball, prodigal, outsider producer; classics including 'Words', plus The Upsetters' versions of their contemporaries The Heptones' tracks Babylon Falling and Mistry Babylon, all appear.

Review: It's no secret that reggae and dub are male-dominated, despite women playing pivotal roles in both genres (What would dancehall be without Sister Nancy?) The undisputed king of British dub production and remixing Adrian Sherwood invites 10 women from across the globe to sing in their native language, a project prompted by repeated experiences of feeling intimidated from dub due to the severe gender imbalance. Hindi, Arabic and even Romani are just 3 of the tongues across this project, of which there are no English lyrics. 'Haste Makes Waste' from Japan's Likkle Mai and 'Chavale' from the Romani of Kerieva, who has a certain Bjork quality to her powerful vocals. This record is powerful and beautiful, a perfect celebration of what community and music can achieve in tandem.

This collection brings together plenty of roots and lovers rock rollers across four sides of vinyl. There are plenty of super sweet sounds you are sure to know as well as some you won't and they are all primed and ready for extra loud deployment on sound systems this summer. Highlights are too plentiful to mention but the vocal innocence of Brown Sugar and heart melting harmonies of The In Crowd are amongst them.

As one of the major powerhouses of Jamaica's music industry during those heady years of ska, rocksteady, reggae and dancehall, Studio One's legacy deserves acknowledgement from anyone with even a passing interest in the music. This collection takes in legends like Horace Andy, Dawn Penn, Johnny Osbourne and Jackie Mittoo, and shines a light on many other iconic artists with that perfect balance of broad appeal and deep-rooted knowledge that Soul Jazz nail when they pull a collection together.

Milton Henry - "Now You See The Scene" (3:38)
Review: Wackies impress upon us their latest compilation; this time, it's another (sixth) edition added to their Jah Children Invasion series, which charts the critical juncture at which dub reggae shifted from live-drummed beats and into drum-machine led, steppers' embraces. The result was a welcoming of 8-bit themes and pixelations, leading to the infamous coinage, digidub. Jah Children Invasion harks back to this not-so-small step for mankind, compiling scene contributions from such legends as Horace Andy ('Drop Off'), Jackie Mittoo ('Majority Rule'), Milton Henry ('Now You See The Scene'), and Chris Wayne ('Streets Of Africa'). The resulting sound is not one of total fascination with the 'digi' aspect of the sound, but a prototypical, melting-pot point at which the leap into increasingly sequenced progressions lent dub a cruder, but more driven development of the sound. A sonic Faustian bargain with a machinic devil, if you will.

Review: Soul Jazz have done it again with the Space Age Dub Special, compiling a selection of dub bits from the legendary Studio One label and its head honcho Clement "Coxsone" Dodd (Dub Specialist). One of the best producers and facilitators in the game, this comp is chock-full of the patented box delays and makeshift tinkerings that made Coxsone particularly famous in his day. Homing in on a space-age theme, one can expect an extra out-of-this-world FX palette here, with snippets of the original tracks' vocal channels phased in and out of their thoroughly effected instrumentals - like eclipsed satellites in orbit.

Review: Since launching late last year, Harlem Shuffle Records has reissued a string of killer reggae recordings from the 1960s and 70's. Here the imprint offers up its first compilation, a 14-track selection of early reggae, dub and rocksteady hand-picked from the vaults of such legendary labels as Black Swan, Blue Cat, Duke, Doctor Bird, High Note and Trojan. It's a fine and hugely entertaining collection all told, with highlights including the easy, laidback skank of Stranger & Patsy's 'Tell it to Me', the trumpet-laden instrumental shuffle of 'Walk With Des' by Des All Stars, the Hammond-powered dancefloor heaviness of Clancy Collins' 'Brother Moses' and the prototype dub brilliance of 'Black Out' by the Hardy Boys.

Review: First released way back in 2005, Soul Jazz Records' tribute to the female artists and vocalists who recorded at the legendary Studio One studio in Kingston, Jamaica, returns on CD for a limited time. It's a compilation that's well worth picking up, for two equally valid reasons. Firstly, it features some of Jamaica's greatest female solo singers and vocal groups - the likes of Marcia Griffiths, the Soulettes, Angela Prince and Jennifer Lara. Secondly, the mix of styles on offer - not just rocksteady and roots reggae, but also dub, ska and disco-reggae - delivers an enjoyable lesson in the vibrancy of Jamaican music during the 60s and '70s. Throw in a chunky booklet packed with insightful liner notes, and you have a genuinely must-have compilation.

Review: Barely a week goes by without another Soul Jazz compilation, and never are they anything else than superb. This time out we're cerated to another collection of tunes from Kingston's seminal Studio One, but rather than the straight up reggae we're used to, it is more of a melting pot of funk, soul, jazz and dub. All of these tunes were written in the 1970s under the watchful eye of studio chief and producer Clement 'Coxsone' Dodd and there is a wealth of deep, sunny, funk cuts that have more than stood the test of time.

Review: Over recent years, there have been countless reissue of reggae-disco rarities and slept-on classics. Soul Jazz has, surprisingly given that they first dipped into the style 20 years ago on the now legendary Reggae Disco Hustle compilation, been surprisingly silent, so it's nice to see them joining the party in fine style. Disco Reggae Rockers is a fitting sequel to its illustrious predecessor, featuring as it does a wealth of killer covers of - and more adventurous 're-versions' inspired by - vintage soul, disco and funk tunes. The plentiful highlights include Devon Russell's inspired take on Curtis Mayfield's 'Move On Up', Risco Connection's super-sweet version of Diana Ross classic 'It's My House', Valerie Harrison's interpretation of Me'lissa Morgan's 'Fools Paradise' and Hortense Ellis re-frame of Candi Staton hit 'Young Hearts Run Free'.

It is packed with artists inspired by the fundamental elements of Rastafarianism and they all speak loudly of the virtues of "living upright in those dread times." Jah Walton - later known as Joseph Cotton - kicks off with the positive vibrations of 'The Seed You Sow' before Big Youth gets deeper and darker. Reggae forms the backbone of the collection, from the blissful consciousness of Pebbles' 'Positive Vibrations' to the more protest-orientated Brown Sugar's 'Black Pride' and Tabby Cat Kelly's 'Don't Call Us Immigrants'. But the presence of Shut Up & Dance, Ragga Twins, Ray Keith aka The Terrorist and Digital Mystikz helps show the uniquely British areas into which sound system culture evolved - rave, breakbeat, jungle and dubstep.

'Reggae disco' might not be a very well-known style, but Soul Jazz are hardly intimidated by any sense of obscurity, especially when it comes to a fusion between their two most prized genres. Homing in on reggae disco versions of funk, soul and disco classics, this curt but precious compilation features reggae covers of classics by Michael Jackon, Earth, Wind & Fire, and Candi Staton, with coverers including Risco Connection and the Crashers.

Review: Philip 'Fatis' Burrell, producer extraordinaire, was founder of the iconic Jamaican label Xterminator, which began its quest for legendary status in the early 1980s. The label started life as Vena Recordings, before becoming Kings & Lions and then Xterminator. At the time, there were interesting movements taking place in black music all over the world, from funk to r&b to hip-hop, but the digital era of reggae and dancehall would soon follow with Xterminator playing a major role in its development. Fatis' core philosophy was perhaps what propelled him into the forefront of the music and drew a multitude of talents, who became some of the biggest artistes in Jamaican music history; the likes of Luciano, Sizzla, Mikey General, and Capleton. This vinyl compilation hears a thorough delving into the vaults of Xterminator, sifting tracks recorded from as far back as 1994 until 2003; a feat embarked upon by Fatis' son Kareem 'Remus' Burrell. Remus has been going through Fatis' 24-track analogue tapes; these must go through an arduous process of baking in an oven before being transferred digitally, hence the name Fatis Tapes In The Oven. Many Xterminator family members are included in this compilation, including Ini Kamoze with 'They Don't Know This', Marcia Griffiths with 'Jah Is', Charlie Chaplin and Josey Wales with 'Only Jah', and Wayne Wonder with 'The Way I Am'.

As if it wasn't obvious enough, this new 2xLP compiles the most legendary productions to ever ooze from the Studio's walls, thanks to the guidance of producer Clement 'Coxsone' Dodd. Rare music from Horace Andy, Jackie Mittoo and Sound Dimension all abound on this ground-shaking CD, which lies somewhere on the intersection between funk and dub.

Review: Delroy Witter ran the Success Sound System out of Harlesden, North London, becoming one of the key figures in the UK's burgeoning reggae and lovers rock scenes. Pulled from his label D-Roy, this second volume of carefully curated classics get the fresh airing they deserve at a time when appreciation for the importance of lovers rock as a branch of reggae has never been stronger. There's ample sentimental, romantic jams contained within, but plenty of heavyweight riddims too, all remastered and presented with the Rock A Shaka attention to detail.
