Review: Deko reconsecrate Angel's debut LP on the band's formative 50th anniversary, coinciding with a fresh wave of tour dates from the theatrically inclined glam-prog rockers. Originally signed to Casablanca after being spotted by then-A&R Gene Simmons, the Washington, DC band's first album leaned heavily into lengthy, keyboard-drenched pomp, a sound more progressive than the tighter glam stylings that followed on On Earth As It Is In Heaven and Sinful. The lineup at the time included Frank DiMino, Punky Meadows, Gregg Giuffria, Mickie Jones and Barry Brandt, building stage staples like 'Tower'. On this limited blue-black swirl vinyl edition, we've liner notes from journalist Dave Reynolds and a small selection of bundles signed by the four surviving original members.

Review: Detroit rock monster Alice Cooper's band hit their stride in 1971 with this raw, swaggering major-label breakout, now reissued on Rhino's high-fidelity imprint. The set blends garage rock grit with theatrical flair, laying the foundation for what would later be called shock rock. Powered by Bob Ezrin's debut co-production, the groupiAlice Cooper, Glen Buxton, Michael Bruce, Dennis Dunaway and Neal Smithideliver hard-edged anthems laced with surrealist angst and proto-punk snarl. Tracks like 'I'm Eighteen' - the track that John Lydon auditioned for the Sex Pistols with - and 'Caught In A Dream' balance noise and nuance, while deeper cuts like 'Sun Arise' and 'Is It My Body' play with form and stagecraft. A new interview with Ezrin offers insight into the sessions and his early relationship with the band. Recut for audiophile listening, it's a vital snapshot of early 70s US rock, reissued with care and context.

Hell To Pay (instrumental version) (5:10)
Review: Previously only available across scattered formats, this compilation pulls together B-sides and bonus material from Deep Purple's 2013 sessions, pressed to vinyl for the first time. 'Hell to Pay (Radio Edit)' kicks things off with a focused jolt of energy, trimmed but still packing that familiar weight. 'It'll Be Me' dives into straight-ahead rock'n'roll, while the alternative mix of 'All the Time in the World' leans more wistful, swapping polish for immediacy. Instrumental takes of 'Uncommon Man' and 'Apres Vous' highlight the band's musicianship with renewed clarityiespecially Don Airey's organ flourishes and Steve Morse's precise guitar work. The live 'Green Onions / Hush' medley, recorded in Gavle, rounds things off with a punchy, well-oiled performance. Maybe not quite as legendary as their highest peaks, tt's nevertheless a window into the band's creative overflow: muscular, melodic and still sounding sharp.

Review: The Doobie Brothers make a triumphant return with a revitalised lineup, uniting founding members Patrick Simmons, Tom Johnston, John McFee and Michael McDonald for their latest release. With a legacy built on infectious harmonies, impeccable musicianship and a genre-blending approach, the band has long been a staple in American rock and pop. Their newest project, produced by John Shanks, reflects both their storied past and evolving present. The album touches on personal themes of growth, recovery and a deepening understanding of life's essential truths, each track showcasing the band's uncanny ability to weave Americana, rock and soul into an expansive yet cohesive sound, while collaborationsiincluding a stirring appearance from Mavis Staplesiadd emotional depth. Tracks like 'Angels & Mercy' and 'Learn To Let Go' embrace themes of growth and recovery, while the title track, featuring Staples, offers a sense of hope and unity. As ever, the Doobies navigate complex emotions with timeless ease, proving that their distinct blend of optimism and introspection still resonates deeply, even after decades of musical evolution.

Review: Between 1969 and 1970, Elton John recorded a wide range of cover versions as part of his early career as a session musician and budget label contributor, and this new Iceni compilation tracks some of the very best of that era. Working frequently with producer Paul Brooks and arranger Zack Laurence, he lent his vocals to low-cost soundalike records covering contemporary hits. Be these Beatles or Rolling Stones redos, or personal takes on Simon & Garfunkel through Creedence Clearwater Revival, none were widely credited at the time, and yet they reveal John's vocal adaptability and emerging style, revealing a familiarly trodden path for many a musical mega-greats: as did Johnny Cash all the way through to Justin Bieber, you can make a sure start with covers.

Review: Van Morrison's 47th full-length arrives as his first album of new material since a run of reinterpretations and cover records. Remembering Now, out via Exile Productions and Virgin, sees the Belfast-born songwriter refocusing on original composition with a sprawling 14-track set that includes 'Down To Joy' - originally heard on the Belfast film soundtrack in 2021 - and new single 'Cutting Corners'. The record spans brass-accented soul, lyrical nostalgia and late-night jazz folk, with arrangements involving long-time collaborators and guests including violinist Seth Lakeman and arranger Fiachra Trench. The legend himself plays guitar, sax and produces throughout, folding a cast of backing vocalists and a full rhythm section into his mix. It's a rare late-career return to the kind of expansive songwriting that first defined his 70s output.

Review: Mixed by Japanese producer and DJ Muro, who has a background in hip-hop, this connoisseur is never short on deep cuts and takes us on a journey through soulful, vintage AOR sonics from his home country. Whilst no two tracks are by the same artist, there's a cohesion to the tracklist thanks to Muro's ear in pulling out things that sit so well together. Asakawa Mak's 1988 cut 'American Night' is a smooth nod to sophisti pop greats Prefab Sprout; whilst Seri Ishikawa's elegant and lush number, 'Eternal 1/2', highlights how innovative she was in forging new sounds back in 1985. These two cuts are just the tip of the iceberg, yet this compilation is an ideal entry point to some of the finest Japanese music of the late 20th century. You can bank on Muro delivering the goods.

Review: The Sweet's contribution to the glam rock canon would find itself less popularly cherished than that of their coevals in Slade, Roxy Music and David Bowie, but that doesn't stop their said many hits from utterly reshaping the ridgeline of British pop rock history. Sweet evolved from bubblegum pop beginnings into one of the defining forces of 70s glam rock. Their early chart success kicked off in 1971 with 'Funny, Funny', made in collaboration with hit-making duo Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman. But this new compilation reissue, Platinum Rare 1, does yet more than just fixate on the hits, familiarising us even further intimately with the cat-suited four-piece in their nascency, selecting from longest-surviving member and guitarist Andy Scott's private archive, and with alternate takes, mixes and unreleased tracks recorded by the original lineup.

Review: All good things must come to an end, and so it is that after ten acclaimed volumes, the Praise Poems series bows out with its 11th and final instalment. This one dives into the world of late 70s and early 80s power pop. From the unreleased gem 'Real Proof' by The Nails to the long-lost tracks by Fingerprints, Naked Rush, Fritz, Blue Rain and Holidaye, this compilation unearths rare energy. Highlights include The Scam's 'Don't Quit' produced by future Spotify exec William Garrett, and a track by Animal Logic, whose band name was famously bought by The Police's Stewart Copeland. A fitting finale.

Lawdy Rolla (3:58)
Pinball (3:03)
Review: A reflective step sideways from the ever-restless Paul Weller, this new release finds the modfather reinterpreting the music that shaped him with measured reverence. Not just a covers project, but a kind of internal cartography-charting influences that feel intimate and formative. The standout 'Lawdy Rolla' is loose and lived-in, a bluesy drawl that lands somewhere between campfire spiritual and basement jam. On the flip, 'Pinball' is rendered with fragile grace, stripped of Pete Townshend's original angst and reimagined as something more quietly resigned. With guests including Noel Gallagher, Robert Plant and Seckou Keita, it's a record driven less by ego than memory. Produced with warmth by Ocean Colour Scene's Steve Cradock, it's an understated, deeply felt offering from an artist still unafraid to look inward.

Review: New York glam-metal outfit White Lion carved out a distinct place in late 80s rock with melodic precision, glossy riffs and stadium-sized sentiment. This collection captures their most anthemic highs, with cuts from Pride, Big Game and Mane Attraction laid out in full power-ballad and riff-led glory. The one-two of 'Wait' and 'Radar Love' opens with slick drama, while 'Hungry' and 'Broken Heart' showcase their knack for writing choruses with teeth. Ballads like 'When the Children Cry' and 'Love Don't Come Easy' dial into emotional overdrive, but there's bite too: 'Little Fighter' and 'Lights & Thunder' burn with righteous intent. Two live recordings-'Lady of the Valley' and 'All You Need Is Rock N Roll'-round it off with arena energy. A slick document of their platinum-era peak.

Review: Neil Percival Young. Canada's finest musical export? Buffalo Springfield founder, sometime member of Crosby, Stills and Nash and, as of 2025, the man behind The Chrome Hearts. He's always got something to say, and plenty to play, and whenever a new project is announce it's more than worth getting excited about. And that's before you hear this latest trip into folk-Americana territory. In many ways, this is typical Young. Stories of the journeyman, the everyday people and the struggle - all told by gently bleeding guitars and with an air of reflection. Tracks are personal and yet outward looking, including one which takes a swipe at Elon Musk - targeted within a wider conversation about crappy American cars. But then The Chrome Hearts definitely feel like a fresh chapter, and one that continues the decade-spanning saga with new ideas and energy.
