Various Artists – Brothers & Sisters

Since launching back in 2009, Justin Carter and Eamon Harkin’s Mister Saturday Night parties in New York have become the stuff of legend, and not only for their riotous, anything goes nature. There’s a hint of militancy about their no-nonsense approach to party promotion; famously, their “dancefloor rules” posters, slapped up around the numerous venues they’ve used for events over the years, ban people from taking photos, using phones, smoking and generally loitering without dancing. Many DJs and party promoters will no doubt empathize with their approach, which in essence boils down to “go hard or go home”. It’s a party, so dance like you mean it.

General Ludd – The Fit Of Passion EP

The Mister Saturday Night label began as a reflection of the musical talent in attendance at the long running party of the same name, but the scope has gradually widened into more of an international concern with the artists featured no doubt introduced to Eamon Harkin and Justin Carter on their increasingly frequent worldwide travels. After several dalliances with Irish producers, the latest Mister release sees attention switched to Glasgow and a new name in General Ludd, though the individuals behind it have a pedigree you should be familiar with.

Boya – The Boya EP

If you’re losing track of how to categorize Mister Saturday Night releases these days, glance at the moon-face that adorns their sleeves for a reminder: it’s night-time music. Getting any more specific about Eamon Harkin and Justin Carter’s New York outlet for all modes of dance music is tricky though. The duo revealed in a recent interview that there’s some joy in secrecy regarding release schedules, and their last several projects have volleyed unpredictably across the dance spectrum, making them a tough label to pigeonhole with a certain catchphrase as we music journalists so love to do. There’s the remarkably pensive house tones of Dark Sky’s In Brackets EP, the nihilistic drum-machine rigour of Hank Jackson’s Deposit release, and Lumigraph’s Yacht Cruiser EP, which eschewed the luxurious aesthetic that its title suggested with rhythms evoking broken glass, hot asphalt and sunburned necks.

Archie Pelago – The Archie Pelago EP

There are plenty of examples of acts in the recent history of dance music who brought the group dynamic to club informed ends. From Mount Kimbie to Elektro Guzzi and on to the likes of Brandt Brauer Frick, there’s something undeniably thrilling about the stark originality and blossoming ideas that spring from collectives that move the rigid structures and formulas away from the singular ego of the one-man band.

At home with Anthony Naples

Anthony Naples is the man behind one of this year’s most insouciant debut records. Mad Disrespect, the first drop on Justin Carter and Eamon Harkin’s Mister Saturday Night imprint, combined snappy percussion indebted to the heyday of New York garage, woozy synths reminiscent of classic Detroit house and an underlying contemporary edge that hinted at the influence of British bass music. There was a whiff of intrigue and mystery behind the release – who was this Naples character, after all? – thanks to the raw yet incredibly accomplished sounds on display throughout the EP’s three tracks.

The release, it turns out, came about in the most organic way possible. Naples is a regular at the Mister Saturday Night parties hosted by Harkin and Carter, and handed in a demo CD which was then picked up for the party-cum-label’s first release in May. Since then his star has been on the rise – Four Tet is a confirmed admirer and has already tapped up the producer to remix his track “128 Harps” – while labels from both sides of the Atlantic have been circling in an attempt to secure his next release. Our New York based writer Nik Mercer went to visit Naples in Brooklyn to discuss everything from Skrillex to remixing, pushy record dealers and his plans for the future.
