Kontra-Musik welcomes The Durian Brothers

DurianBrothers

The German trio will debut on the Swedish label with a five-track mini-album called Das Macht Modern.

Since Kontra-Musik began in 2006 the label has welcomed a varied cast of artists into its fold with releases from Agaric, Luke Hess and Jason Fine during its formative years, while in recent times Ulf Eriksson’s operation has housed the music of Rivet, Andreas Tilliander’s TM404 project, Porn Sword Tobacco & SVN, to Frak. News Düsseldorf trio The Durian Brothers will release on the label adds yet more flavour to Kontra following some intriguing output in 2014, and a playful press release explains, “the very backbone of Das Macht Modern is the play between sounds and rhythms that stem from crumbling temples, huts and bonfires and the modern, yet analog sounds from altered machines.” The label also adds, “the slow but decidedly sweaty “Weggeputscht” is the perfect example of this. It sort of sounds like Aztecs working on a factory assembly line.”

The Durian Brothers are known for an alternative take on music making, and a facet of their production process often involves prepared turntables, where elastic bands and other objects are used to create sounds that are then looped, sequenced or effected with pedals and other generators. Made up of Stefan Schwander, Mark Matter and Florian Meyer, the three Durian Brothers run their own Diskant label which has so far released all of their music, two records by Harmonious Thelonious and debuted Meyer’s solo project Don’t DJ. Kontra are clearly excited they’ve lured the trio away from their label for the first time by saying, “this mini album is so soaked in organic movement and compulsive rhythms that it should probably be tried out as a experimental treatment for coma patients.” Listen to the aforementioned “Weggeputscht” below and more of the release over at Kontra-Musik’s SoundCloud.

Kontra-Music will give Das Macht Modern by The Durian Brothers a vinyl release on October 27 while digital copies will be made available on November 24.
