Juno Plus Staff Mix Vol. 3: Scott Wilson

sms3_590Scott Wilson explores grime, footwork and experimental bass in a mix featuring Demdike Stare, Inkke, Taso, Sentinel, Celestial Trax, Logos and more.

One of the best DJ sets I’ve seen in recent times was Logos’ closing set at London grime night Boxed last month. After building the energy to a peak, he purposefully broke everything down with an ambient interlude, halting the momentum before building everything back up again out of weird, fractured grime rhythms. By the time he closed with with MSSINGNO’s “Brandy Flip”, it felt as if I’d witnessed the very opposite of what DJs are meant to do – keep people dancing. It’s one of the reasons why Boxed is one of the best regular nights in London right now; it might be a grime night, but its residents aren’t afraid to take things into unexpected territory either.

This tension between forward momentum and broken-down beats has been one of the most exciting things to have emerged in club music over the past year or so, with the attention placed on nights like Boxed and Berlin’s Janus night, and DJs like Mumdance and Total Freedom, all of whom seem to be interested in building something completely new out of existing pieces. It’s this that provides the inspiration for my first Juno Plus staff mix, which is a fairly accurate map of my musical headspace right now, in which the straight-up grime of Boxed raves can co-exist with the industrial sound of Demdike Stare’s Testpressing series, and straight-up footwork can sit beside the futuristic, hyper-stylised take on the genre from Celestial Trax and Sentinel.
