Rick Wilhite has more Vibes New & Rare

Moodymann, DJ Stingray, Norm Talley, K Alexi Shelby and more feature on the upcoming compilation put together by Wilhite for Rush Hour. 

Back in 2010, Rush Hour invited Three Chairs member Rick ‘The Godson’ Wilhite to oversee Vibes New & Rare Music, an 11-track compilation and series of 12″ samplers that celebrated the role the esteemed selector and producer played in moulding local Detroit tastes for all things new, soulful and electronic as the head of the Vibes New & Rare Music record store. Theo Parrish, Glenn Underground and Marcellus Pittman all contributed, whilst the compilation also worked as a platform to introduce newer names such as Kyle Hall and Ricardo Miranda.

It’s been a while since Rush Hour have put their weight behind a top drawer compilation release, so it’s exciting to hear that they’ve asked The Godson to pull together a selection of cuts for a second volume of Vibes. Due out in late May, Vibes New & Rare Music 2 is set to be released across two double LP editions and expands Wilhite’s remit to include music by producers from Detroit, Chicago and New York. Take a glance at the tracklisting and you’ll find Moodymann sharing space with Blaze’s Josh Milan, Jovonn, K Alex Shelby, DJ Stingray, Los Hermanos and more.

In an interview published on the Rush Hour site today, Wilhite revealed “the compilation itself represents Vibes and the people that represented the store. People like label artists who bought records. The cuts I have selected for the compilation are not available anywhere else. Some of the cuts were given to me personally, for me to keep.” 

Rush Hour will release Vibes New & Rare Music 2 in late May.
