Prostitutes next up on Diagonal

Cleveland-based James Donadio will release the Shatter and Lose EP for Powell’s label later this month.

A veteran of Cleveland’s underground music scene, James Donadio emerged under the Prostitutes moniker in 2011, when he released his self-titled debut under the name on his own stabUdown label. Since then he has explored his blend of primitive rhythms and industrial sonics across similarly-minded labels Opal Tapes and Digitalis, combining techno and noise in similar ways to the likes of US peers such as Container, Metasplice and Carlos Giffoni.

Donadio’s collision of styles makes him an ideal candidate for a release on Powell’s Diagonal Records, which has explored similarly uneasy sonic terrain across releases from Shit and Shine, Blood Music and Powell himself. Entitled Shatter and Lose, the four-track EP comes described as “a beautifully distilled dose of blackened electronic funk” which contrasts light and dark musical elements; tracks like “Poison The Masses” and “Sold A Decade At A Time” supposedly recall late period Cabaret Voltaire’s “sharp fusions of pop nous with sonic experimentation.”

As with previous Diagonal releases great attention has been paid to the sleeve art; created by Guy Featherstone and photographer Robbie Maynard, the pair tracked down two real prostitutes off the Caledonian Road in London, and overlaid their pictures on top of each other to create the striking, if disturbing, cover.

Diagonal Records will release Shatter and Lose on 10″ and digital formats later this month.
