Featured Chart: Jimpster (Best of 2009)

Following on from our in-depth interview with Jamie Odell aka Jimpster, earlier this month, we’ve roped the Freerange boss into talking us through his top tunes of 2009. Unsurprisingly, there’s some stellar choices from the deeper end of house music.

Jimpster’s Best of 2009 Chart:

1. Mathias Meyer – Infinity (Liebe Detail)

What an absolute beauty from one of the most consistent labels on the planet.  This track is a real roller that builds and drops in all the right places.  Simple but seriously effective and I’ve not had a gig yet where the dancefloor haven’t loved it to bits.

2. Quarion – Turn Off The Light (Retreat)

Retreat is a vinyl only label run by Quarion and Hauke from Session Victim and this track is from their third release. Borrowing heavily from Dexter Wansel’s “Sweetest Pain”, this deep and groovy house track never fails to win over a crowd thanks to the stripped back beats and bass, lush Rhodes chords and ‘Turn off the lights’ vocal. Definitely one for the afterhours to get them slowdancing and smooching on the dancefloor.

3. Craig Smith & The Revenge – The Soul (Delusions Of Grandeur)

It’s safe to say that Revenge has had a blistering year whether it be with his hectic DJ schedule, 6th Borough edits or countless brilliant remixes.  Delusions Of Grandeur must have been super pleased to get one of his and Craig Smith’s earlier forays into original productions and it certainly set the bar high for what is now my favorite label from the UK.

4. Ethyl & Flori – The Trimley EP (Freerange)

Ethyl and Flori are on a two man mission to bring the real deep back into house music.  I was floored by the raw, heads down grooves on the three tracks we picked up for Freerange and I’ve got a feeling that these young whippersnappers are destined for big things.  Their production level is seriously sick and I now use these tracks as a reference for my own mixes because they’re just so damn good.

5. Mathias Mesteno – Andrea (Upon You)

Mathias made one of my favorite tracks of 2008; “Dixie’s Diner”, and now he’s done it again in 2009 with Andrea.  He manages to get exactly the right combination of super deep and floor pleasing energy which comes from his confident arrangements and attention to detail.  There’s an underlying techno sensibility to his tracks but with bags of warmth, soul and groove.  Look out for an upcoming EP of his on Freerange next year.
