  1. AJ Franklin & The Inn House Crew - "Where You Gonna Run To" (feat UK Principal & Vin Gordon) (4:15)
  2. AJ Franklin & The Inn House Crew - "Where You Gonna Run To" (feat UK Principal & Vin Gordon - version) (4:17)
Review: The Inn House Crew are well known instrumental reggae producers who have made Room In The Sky their regular home. Their second release this month is a tasty hook up with AJ Franklin, UK Principal and Vin Gordon. "Where You Gonna Run To" is a popping dub fleshed out with cavernous drums and bass that sit together perfectly. Synth details and hits spit out and horns drift to sooth your soul. The effervescing vocals version on the flip injects a dose of warmth to an already steamy cut. Another standout effort from this ever reliable crew.

Freedom (7")
Cat: ROOTS 23. Rel: 09 Dec 19
  1. Earl Sixteen - "Freedom" (2:45)
  2. The Upsetters - "Freedom" (dub) (2:45)
Review: This is some essential original roots reggae from all the way back in 1977. Recorded by Earl (Sixteen) Daley, Lee "Scratch" Perry, Steely, Albert Malawi and Dalton Browne at the legendary Black Ark studios and now reissued by Belgian connoisseurs Roots Vibration, "Freedom" is a real stepper; sweet guitar licks and vocal work with drums and bass piled up on top of one another in perfect harmony. If you're after something deeper, flipover for the "Dub" version provided by The Upsetters. Timeless.

  1. Alton Ellis - "I'm Still In Love" (3:27)
  2. The Soul Vendors - "Just A Bit Of Soul" (3:06)
Review: Alton Ellis' "I'm Still In Love" is one of Jamaica's most famous songs. It has a rich history, too, that was the inspiration for Althea and Donna's 1997 smash "Uptown Top Ranking" and here it gets a loud-cut 12" pressing that allows it to soar. It's a track full of longing, with dusty keys and a natty bassline finished off with gorgeous vocals. The flipside houses the Soul Vendors' "Just A Bit Of Soul" featuring Jackie Mittoo. It's a more upbeat ditty with bumpier drums and jazz flecked keys to get you grooving.

  2. Goody Gap & The Inn House Crew - "Madness Badness" (feat Vin Gordon - version) (4:19)
Review: The Inn House Crew has been serving up the platters that matter on Room In The Sky long enough to have a firm following by now. Once again they bring rather melancholic vibes to this new one. "Madness Badness" feat. Vin Gordon is a flabby dub with pillow bass and rounded drums, but the trumpets that ring out are beautifully muted and sombre. Flip over for an alternative version that's more amped up and direct for those who are after something more energetic. Whichever side you go for, this is one you will want to add to your collection.

Cat: JFR 1267. Rel: 08 Oct 19
  1. Naggo Morris - "Jah Guide" (7:26)
  2. The Observer - "Give Her My Love" (6:24)
Review: London's Jah Fingers present former Heptones singer Naggo Morris and producer Niney The Observer on this latest one. The A side houses the gentle roots and lovers rock combo of "Jah Guide": a steamy, earthy, humid cut that pairs great rim shots with the aloof vocal work of Morris. Flip over for a busier cut by The Observer. "Give Her My Love" features a lead line that rings out with naive charm, taut drum hits and prickly percussion that will keep your limbs moving. A two sided gem.

Captive (7")
Cat: ROOTS 21. Rel: 09 Dec 19
  1. Lee Perry - "Captive" (4:13)
  2. The Upsetters - "Dub Cap" (3:43)
Review: Roots Vibration keep up their tireless dub reissue work with another dig into the untouchable back catalogue of the one and only Lee "Scratch" Perry. Back to 1978, this is a slab of gold that was first recorded in the revered Black Ark studios the dub don owned before burning it down in a stoned and paranoid state. "Captive" finds him musing inwardly on the continual enslavement of black people in the West, calling for mental and spiritual liberation. The Upsetters once again dub it out on the flip side in excellent fashion.

Cat: MBX 143. Rel: 30 Jan 20
  1. Created By The Father (3:15)
  2. Created By The Father (version) (3:07)
Review: Winston Ready has been turning out the grooves since the eighties, but now Room in the Sky have got some red hot new material from him in cahoots with The Inn House Crew (who as the title suggest are the label's in house team.) "Created By The Father" is a feel good jaunt with some playful brass leads and a jangling rhythm section. It's earthy and authentic and the flip is a masterful dub that somehow becomes even deeper and more inviting. Once again this label has come correct. Don't sleep.

Funny (limited 7" in hand-stamped sleeve)
Cat: T 040. Rel: 17 Dec 19
  1. Funny (3:06)
  2. I Am Yours Forever (2:55)
Review: The Treasure Isle reissue series continues via a fresh pressing of the Soul Lads superb 1968 45, "Funny". It sees the slick, soulful harmony group accompanied by the Supersonics, one of Skatalites man Tommy McCook's alternative groups. The title track is warm, woozy and sweet, with the group adding brilliant vocals to a languid rocksteady backing track rich in mazy organ solos and warm bass. Flipside "I Am Yours Forever" is a little fuzzier but no less sweet, with hazy horn lines catching the ear just as much as the head-nodding, bass-heavy groove and the group's fantastic doo-wop style vocals.

  6. T Jah & Senor C - "Flute From Ancient Time" (3:38)
Review: This new one from Basscomesaveme was record din March 2018 when Blackwood Soundsystem hosted a dubplate session with King Alpha and Fikir Amlak in Lahr. One of the plate scut that day forms the basis of this EP and has been embellished with additional dubs that make for some superb atmospheres. There is a Middle Eastern charm to "Ancient Man" while "dub Man" is a roots classic. "Ekos" plays with a fine harmonica lead and "Flute From Ancient Time" is utterly spellbinding.

Cat: MISSYOU 008. Rel: 28 Nov 19
  1. Starry Eyed (4:14)
  2. Starry Eyed (instrumental) (4:15)
Review: Actor and singer Philip Michael Thomas was of course Detective Ricardo Tubbs on the TV series Miami Vice alongside Don Johnson. Here though, he is even more impressive: this is a lovably naive and innocent softboi tune for the late night lovers and Sunday smooches. "Starry Eyed" is as sentimental as it should be given the title - it has little dub riffs over crisp 80s drum, tenderly whispered vocals that cannot fail to win you over, and a slow motion but wagering groove to sink deep into. The instrumental is less candied, with a more tropical feel thanks to some shimmering xylophone sounds. Lush.

Review: Time Unlimited were as brilliant as they were obscure back in the 80s. Long forgotten for some reason, they are now brought back to life by Fruits Records who present one of Donovan Joseph, Hugo Blackwood and Orville Smith's finest dubs. "Right Time Come" is a melancholic dub with hits ricocheting off into the distant as silky leads and organ chords all melt your heart. On the flip, High Time Players remember the golden years of the group with "Dub Time Come". Get ready to fall in love with these long lost greats.

Review: Regarded by dub lovers as a seminal collection, this three CD epic has been unavailable for a quarter of a century. It draws together three hugely important dub albums and includes seven previously unreleased tracks from the band's heyday from 1950 to 1975. Promoter, producer and DJ Arthur "Duke" Reid was a master of this form and a hero in Jamaica: his sound ruled the local dance halls and much of it was engineered by Errol Brown. You can hear his skills in all of the tracks here - the subtle keys, the sliding hi hats and the rolling drums all exude a perfectly inviting warmth.

Review: The original reggae legend lives on as strong as ever. This newly remastered collection is a real behemoth and comprehensive overview of the Jamaican's great career. Unlike any other world renowned star, Marley transcended music and became as known for his political views and positive outlook as he did his music. Here though it's all about the latter, with smash hits like "Sun Is Shining", "African Herbsman," and "Trench Town Rock" all present and correct across five slabs of wax, with a poster also included. Add this to your collection and you'll have all the maestro's greatest work in one place.

Review: Newcomer Spring Wata links with contemporary reggae stars The Rockers Disciples for a tidy 10 track album of timeless roots and reggae. Run through with the sort of humidity, horizontal grooves and catchy riffs that make reggae such an irresistible genre, there's plenty to enjoy in the vocal work, too. Some cuts go deep, some empower, but all impress with natty horns and slick effects. This is only the fourth release on the Blackboard Jungle label but is another one that marks it out as a modern day outlet for keeping an eye on if you like your dub.

Review: This double CD set draws together some of the most lauded, late 1970s productions from Linval Thompson, a roots, dub and dancehall stalwart whose music - and the artists he worked for - was championed by Trojan Records. On CD one you'll find two key albums: fine 1977 solo set "I Love Marijuana", whose dub-wise roots rhythms were laid down by a backing band including Wailers member Aston "Family Man" Barrett and Sly & Robbie, and the much more dubbed-out and intoxicatingly heavy "African Princess" (1978) by leading Jamaican toaster Big Joe. Disc two boasts the dub/early dancehall fusion of Trinity's similarly inclined 1979 classic "Rock In The Ghetto" as well as eight rare (and exceptionally good) extended mixes plucked from various Thompson-produced releases.

Review: The unstoppable Bokeh Versions welcome the new year with some forward looking digi-dub gold. This one comes from Nottingham based sound sculptor TNT, who has never put out a vinyl record until now. An artist who has been pursuing a solo career since his Earthquake collective went south in 2002, he has stayed relatively low key while putting out various dub plates. The best of them from 2006 to 2018 are now collected here with production by Aba Shanti making each one pop. This album tells the story of a fine chapter in UK dub history, so don't miss out.
