Kill The Devil
Kill The Devil (7" repress)
Cat: CGI 7006. Rel: 29 Sep 20
  1. Kill The Devil (3:22)
  2. Bury The Devil (3:36)
Review: Original copies of the original 1978 seven-inch of 12 Tribes Of Israel's debut single are not only hard to find, but also exceedingly expensive on the rare occasions they do come up for sale. This reissue then is well overdue. "Kill The Devil" is that rarest of things: an instrumental roots reggae workout that peppers a dancefloor-friendly groove with fluid piano, Hammond organ and jazz guitar solos. The flipside dub version - re-titled "Bury The Devil" - is also superb, with a stripped-back, reverb-drenched version of the track's killer groove rightly taking pride of place throughout.

Short Break
Cat: FTR 029. Rel: 13 Oct 20
  1. Short Break (3:48)
  2. Revenge (3:17)
Review: Cosmic Shuffling is a Geneva based combo who distill funk, ska and soul into their own unique sound. They last appeared with double a side ska 7" single 'Eastern Ska' and got plenty of people in the game excited. Now they follow on with another winner that opens with some brilliantly instrumental work. 'Short Break' has natty little riffs and swaggering drums, with a playful lead that takes you back to the heat of a mid-60s Jamaica when rocksteady sounds were all the hype. A shuffling ska rework takes care of the reverse and takes off with great horns from a six-piece band.

Review: Dr Ring Ding is Germany's foremost ska trombonist and vocalist. While not that well known outside the ska scene, he's released a lot of records over the years, many of which are well worth picking up. One obvious example is 2013's Kalipso Times, a tasty four-track 10" that has now been given the reissue treatment. Recorded with a vast array of musicians, it's an effortlessly joyful and entertaining affair that sees him fuse his usual reggae and ska influences with nods to rhythm & blues (cheeky opener 'The Cat & The Rooster') and - more obviously - calypso. The latter inspiration is most potently explored on 'Obeah Wedding', which comes on like a long-lost Kid Creole track.

Cat: PARK 1031. Rel: 12 Oct 20
  1. Blue Monday (3:00)
  2. Bridge Over Troubled Water (2:46)
Review: Sometimes known as Park Rangers, Japanese outfit Inokashira Rangers are the world's leading purveyors of unlikely, Hammond-heavy reggae cover versions. Since first emerging five years ago, they've served up countless surprise reggae takes on tracks from the likes of Pharrell Williams, Nirvana, Sonic Youth and Underworld. Here they continue on a similar theme by re-imagining New Order's throbbing, surging dancefloor anthem 'Blue Monday' as a cheeky chunk of turn-of-the-'70s rocksteady goodness. As usual, the band's organist is in fine form, playing mazy solos that track the vocal melody found on Bernard Sumner and company's 1983 original. Over on the flip they serve up something slower and breezier: a languid rocksteady interpretation of Simon & Garfunkel's 'Bridge Over Troubled Water', this time utilizing plenty of Wurlitzer organ sounds. Ace!

Redemption Song (40th Anniversary Edition) (Record Store Day 2020)
UMC
Cat: 217421. Rel: 23 Sep 20
  1. Redemption Song (3:51)
  2. Redemption Song (Band version) (3:22)
  3. I Shot The Sheriff (live) (5:18)
Review: This year's Record Store Day also happens to mark 40 years since Bob Marley put out one of his most enduring tunes. 'Redemption Song' carries the same emotional weight now as it always has and on this special, limited edition clear vinyl it comes backed with a band version as well as a live version of 'I Shot The Sheriff.' It's all about that A-side, though, with its acoustic guitars, a subtle backing for Marley's pained and vulnerable vocals. The band version is fleshed out with some swaggering dub and the live version of 'I Shot The Sheriff' is filled with atmosphere and noodling bass riffs.

  1. Move On Up (3:53)
  2. Give Me Your Love (3:32)
Review: If you've not already picked up a copy of Mutaksuku Records' superb reissue of two of reggae musician Devon Russell's greatest Curtis Mayfield covers, we'd suggest grabbing one of these Juno exclusive white vinyl versions, which also happens to ship with a tasty wooden "45" adaptor. You may already know Russell's incredible '84 version of 'Move on Up', which re-imagines it as a languid, post-disco reggae-soul anthem that just oozes sun-soaked positivity. On this seven-inch, it comes backed by something equally as essential: the artist's lesser-known 1993 take on 'Give Me Your Love', which turns the much-loved song into a colourful, synth-laden trip through Balearic reggae territory. In a word: essential.

  1. Happy
  2. Kiss
Review: More from the bulging back catalogue of Park Rangers, an obscure Japanese reggae band who have spent the last decade delivering surprising cover versions of well-known pop, rock and disco songs. On side A there's another chance to wonder at their 1960s rocksteady style re-make of Pharrell Williams' mega-hit happy, in which the Neptunes star's lead vocal is replaces with a cheery Hammond organ solo. It's the kind of cover that can't help but put a smile on your face. The same could be said about their similarly minded flipside cover of Prince classic 'Kiss'. While it's not as instantly recognisable, it has a similar feel thanks to the band's canny fusion of tuneful Hammond organ solos and retro-futurist reggae riddims.

  4. Curtis Baker & The Bravehearts - "30-60-90" (2:42)
Review: This super limited 7" features four original Gravity label artists and serving up their own respective versions of one original. Prince Alfonso & The Fever kick off with fat-bottomed swagger and earthy dub funk grooves, and Nestor Alvarez flip the script with more Latin percussion and bossa-style grooves. Brentford Rd Soul Rebels take you to a hot summer's day with their reggae soundtrack, and last of all Curtis Baker & The Bravehearts lead with a big sax line and hip swinging tambourines that all come underpinned by big bass. Varied and vital, it's a small bit of wax but it packs a big punch.

Fooling Around
  1. The Rio Grandes - "Fooling Around" (2:56)
  2. The Duke Reid Group - "Oh Misery" (2:22)
Review: As reggae aficionados will tell you, Dutchess was one of Treasure Isle founder Arthur 'Duke' Reid's smaller labels. These days, the reborn print is being used to reissue sought-after rarities and previously unheard tracks from Reid's vast Treasure Isle vaults. These two tracks come under the former category and were previously only available as part of Trojan's Treasure Isle Ska Rarities box set. The A-side boasts The Rio Grandes' boisterous and harmonic 'Foolin' Around' - a defiantly fuzzy, early '60s Reid production that for some reason never came out at the time - while on the flip you'll find 'Oh Misery' by the producer's early all-star backing band, the Duke Reid Group; this, too, is a vital piece of previously buried ska gold.

Review: Indica Dubs and Music Mania link up once more for their 18th release, which comes from two of the UK dub top legends and pioneers in Alpha & Omega and The Disciples. This album was first put out in 1998, but only in CD format. Now two deuces later it makes its first ever appearance on vinyl and is as crucial as ever, with its crisp and fresh, steel plated dub sounds and warrior leads. The iconic 'Roaring Lion' is a well known anthem in the dub scene, loved and admired by all, so gets a welcome inclusion and is sure to once again be heard everywhere as soon as we can enjoy some real life sound system action .

Review: When Inhmost made their debut on Greta Cottage Woodpile in 2015, we remarked on the quality of their picture-perfect tributes to the cosmic, soul-warming sound of 1990s ambient labels such as Fax and Apollo. "Everything Is New", their belated second album, takes a similar widescreen, retro-futurist approach, with the publicity-shy duo delivering impeccably crafted, exceedingly atmospheric workouts that variously doff a cap to Global Communication ('Aurulia'), Pete Namlook (the quiet and contemplative 'Break Down'), Space Time Continuum ('Deeper Thoughts'), the Irresistible Force ('Sleep Walk'), Ninja Tune's almost forgotten N Tone label ('Spectrum'), and the more ambient end of Richard H Kirk's Sandoz project (the warm and wonderful 'Sometime For Time').

Review: You can't overestimate the importance of The Heptones in the evolution of Jamaican music, after they defined the transition from ska to rocksteady and on to reggae. This album, "Back On Top", captures the band in the early '80s, when they had reached an international audience after working with Lee 'Scratch' Perry and releasing on Island Records. By this point they were back producing themselves, creating a perfect spanning sweet ballads and upbeat skankers, not to mention a cover of The Beatles' "Yesterday". Lovingly repressed on 180 gram red vinyl, this is a welcome reissue of an album that's been tricky to get hold of for some time, from one of the all time great reggae acts.

Review: Chances are you've already got at least one Bob Marley album in your collection. Even if you own a few, we'd still recommend taking a close look at this quintuple-vinyl celebration of the reggae superstar's career and legacy. The first four slabs of wax take us on a whistle-stop tour of Marley's career with the wailers, moving from fuzzy, lo-fi early career recordings to the height of his worldwide fame in the late 1970s. While there are some classics missing, the compilers have made up for this by including harder-to-find instrumentals and dubs. The fifth disc showcases the strength of Marley's song writing skills by gathering together covers from the likes of Sly & Robbie (with disco star Gwen Guthrie on vocals), Black Uhuru, Max Romeo, Horace Andy and Gregory Isaacs.

Review: Time, apparently, does nothing to diminish the considerable legacy and relevancy of Bob Marley and his trusty Wailers band. Here we are, fifty years after they recorded some of their best material, and still collections of their music are in hot demand. Rebel's Hop: An Early 70's Retrospective captures the energy and essence of the young bands early years on four sides of red and green wax. It offers a fresh perspective on the evolution of the reggae sound as taken to the wider conscious by Robert Nesta Marley, Peter McIntosh and Neville O'Riley Livingston.

Review: Since launching late last year, Harlem Shuffle Records has reissued a string of killer reggae recordings from the 1960s and 70's. Here the imprint offers up its first compilation, a 14-track selection of early reggae, dub and rocksteady hand-picked from the vaults of such legendary labels as Black Swan, Blue Cat, Duke, Doctor Bird, High Note and Trojan. It's a fine and hugely entertaining collection all told, with highlights including the easy, laidback skank of Stranger & Patsy's 'Tell it to Me', the trumpet-laden instrumental shuffle of 'Walk With Des' by Des All Stars, the Hammond-powered dancefloor heaviness of Clancy Collins' 'Brother Moses' and the prototype dub brilliance of 'Black Out' by the Hardy Boys.

Review: This Record Store Day, Two Tone have put together a specially half-speed mastered version of this classic ska compendium. It is part of the ongoing 40th anniversary celebrations for Two Tone Records and is a soundtrack to the movie of the same name. It has never been repressed since 1981, making this an even bigger deal, and it contains standout live versions of plenty of essential tunes from greats like The Specials, Madness, The Selecter, The Beat, Bad Manners and The Bodysnatchers. Whether new to the sound or a diehard, this heavyweight slab provides plenty of highlights

Review: "Stars on Parade" is officially the legendary Coxone Smith's first long player - "All Star Top Hits" is often thought to be, but wrongly so - a bright and breezy collection of classic ska. It is one influenced by the R&B, jive and New Orleans sounds that were first played on Jamaican Sound Systems having been imported from the United States and also touches on the evolution into rocksteady, reggae and dancehall. This collection comes with liner notes by Brian Keyo including plenty of behind the scenes stories that add extra colour to the tunes.

Review: Delroy Wilson was one of the best-beloved vocalists in the history of reggae, and now after a rather quiet period in Radiation Roots's history, they make a welcome return by offering up Wilson's early 70's classic Better Must Come. Jamaican music evolved in the mid-60s but the hits kept coming and Wilson was part of that. With Bunny Lee in the producer's chair and Sid Bucknor and Carlton Lee as resident engineers for this project, there are soulful moments with heavy patois, funky reggae groovers and organ heavy jams. Lyrically Delroy touches on deception, love and loss, all with slick guitar picking and superb organ skank.

Review: Here's one for dedicated reggae and dancehall diggers: a box set boasting seven 45s featuring a range of obscure tracks, sought-after rarities and unreleased cuts from the vaults of the late, great producer - and Exterminator label chief Philip 'Fatis' Burrell. There's naturally some top talent on show - think Dennis Brown, Marcia Griffiths, Sizzla and Beres Hammond - with highlights coming think and fast. Our picks include the summery and soulful digital reggae warmth of Chezidek's 'Earth Feel It', the percussion-rich dancehall heat of Sizzla's 'Marcus Garvey', the rough-cut rhythms and sparkling toaster vocals of Turbulence's 'True Story' and the creepy chords and serious sub weight of Xterminator Crew's 'Do Some Good (Version)'.
