Review: 'Mordechai is another blissed-out record from Texan party-chill-psyche trio Khruangbin. It's also among the outfit's most defined and driven, a smooth, sticky hot funk odyssey made for hazy afternoon soirees. Leader Laura Lee is, as ever, unfathomably siren-like on vocals, her bass grooves aiding the process of seduction no end. Even at the most upbeat and anthemic, 'Time (You and I)', it's hard not to feel woozy and intoxicated by the pared-back breaks and guitar lick combination. Dance floor ammo for sure, as is Pelota. Overall, though, it's an album best savoured slowly, allowing you to fully appreciate every lackadaisical moment of opiate goodness, with tracks such as 'Father Bird, Mother Bird', 'One To Remember' and 'Shida' summoning stunning sticky, heavy, deep atmospheres.

Review: It's hard to believe The Orielles are still so young when you consider their position as mainstays of British alternative indie-surf-rock-pop business. Then you remember how they grabbed attention while still in school, bursting from the former mill town of Halifax, West Yorkshire, to widespread acclaim, and refused to look back since. On "Disco Volador" they show just how much versatility they've mastered along the way. "Bobbi's Second World", for example, is plucked straight from the Tom Tom Club playbook - funk fuelled, good time mayhem. "Whilst The Flowers Look" is more in line with the stuff that first won everyone over, although perhaps more complex. "A Material Mistake" ushers in siren-like moodiness, underlaid with guitar licks and warm strings to combat the icier sections. Those who think pop music needs more ideas might want to take note.

Review: Introducing the new psychedelic solo project of Paul Alexander, the bass player of Bella Union's mainstay signing Midlake. In a recent interview, Alexander said: "I'd always wanted Midlake to experiment more with the arrangements, or to get more into psychedelic textures," and this is obviously where he's gone to achieve such a sound. The album takes in breezes of shoegaze with psych-rock and the overall feel that comes out the other side is something closer to futuristic country & western space folk. Album highlights include "An Eye For An I" and album opener "SF" that should appeal to fans of Whitest Boy Alive, Father John Misty to Pink Floyd and '80s synth.

Review: The Black Lips are one of those outfits that are never content to sit still, and are armed with more than the necessary talent to pull off their shifts of shape, style and focus. In the past we've seen them touch on punk and dive headfirst into psychobilly, but on 'Sing In A World That's Falling Apart' they move to pastures new - literally - by embracing country and western.

Don't expect this to be packed with slide guitars and lamentations on D.I.V.O.R.C.E., though. Instead we're talking bourbon-soaked, thigh-slapping, rowdy and raucous songs to soundtrack any self-respecting barroom brawl. There are shades of Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan at play here, and this is no cheap pastiche - all three of those greats, and more, would be proud to call this one their own.

Review: A duo who've put considerable work into exploring the universes that can be located within two chords, Moon Duo may not be a band that anyone is expecting surprises or musical evolution from, rather a journey into their comforting mind-meld of Spacemen 3 drone and krautrock texture. 'Occult Architecture Vol. 2' bucks this trend in style, swapping the imposing darkness of its predecessor for open spaces and beatific soundscapes. The Balearic Neil Young lilt of 'Mirror's Edge' and alien glam stomp of 'The Crystal World', indeed, draw a map towards worlds and visions even admirers of this band didn't realise they were capable of.

Review: The psychic intertwining of Ripley Johnson and Saneae Yamada has always extended across areas of enlightenment somewhat more advanced than your average two-chord psych explorers, yet 'Occult Architecture' is adept at striking a tidy balance between the monomaniacal and the metaphysical. Much as ever, the starting points here are the motorik rhythm of Neu! and La Dusseldorf, the vintage synth sounds of the '70s and the guitar curlicues of Spacemen 3, yet few contemporary longhairs possess their elemental power to extend these core elements and render them a pathway to the stars.

Review: When it comes to plugging in mega stacks of amplified prog-rock, Vancouver-area band Black Mountain deliver a retro-futuristic sound that's as large as any Godzilla soundtrack. With Destroyer presenting a fifth LP on Bloomington label Jagjaguwar, Black Mountain go someway in delivering a bold cross reference of only the best and most legendary points of 60s, 70s and 90s rock n roll regalia. With keys and piano mixed with guitars, distortion and vocoders giving the band a futuristic, krautrock (Deutsche elektronik musik) edge, British psychedelic and raw but atmospheric arrangements give the band their own undeniable identity. With songs passing the bottle from slow dancing rock, flashy hair metal, to synthy guitars and cosmic arpeggios, the best metal of today is still way up there, on Black Mountain.

Review: In 2015, Texas & London-based trio Khruangbin's debut album 'The Universe Smiles Upon You' garnered wide critical acclaim and captured attention for its seamless genre-blending and internationally shaped sound - one that evidently has deep roots in Thai-funk cassette culture. Similarly to their debut, sophomore record 'Con Todo El Mundo' is a cocktail of largely instrumental surf-rock, afro-funk, middle-eastern and far-eastern influences, mixed with warmth and soul. As if their pallette wasn't diverse enough, the additions of the pared back boogie on 'Evan Finds The Third Room', the widescreen dream-pop of 'A Hymn' and deeply intricate writing of closer 'Friday Morning', are illustrative of a band who have worked hard to broaden their horizons while keeping their roots in mind and, despite transatlantic bases, clearly remain a stunningly cohesive and well-matched outfit.

Review: If you're looking for someone to chronicle the seamier side of British musical history, or a curatorial force with insights into its more dusty and unchartered areas, no-one is better qualified than Saint Etienne boffins Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs, and they've excelled themselves here, delivering a beautifully chosen and endlessly evocative selection of songs from an era often overlooked by the reductive forces of retro culture - a disenfranchised but rich zone in the early seventies after psychedelia, when although the '60s dream had faded slightly the atmosphere of melancholy and hope alike made for unclassifiable and evergreen music. Not quite prog, not quite psych, the likes of T2, Aardvark, Matching Mole and Van Der Graaf Generator were harbingers of a lost spirit that makes for endlessly rewarding listening here, sitting proudly alongside better known figures like Daevid Allen and John Cale on a strange time capsule to be cherished.

The brains behind the rightly celebrated and ever-surprising Tame Impala, he's never one for delivering quite what you expect, while still understanding that one of the most important things in music is striking a balance between the familiarity disciples need, and the expressive exploration that can prick the ears of the previously uninitiated.

Album number four, "The Slow Rush", certainly adopts a different outlook to previous undertakings. It also more than lives up to its name. It's smooth, tripped out (perhaps not so surprising on the latter front) and strikingly void of those highs that seem to offer the aural equivalent to some opiate-amphetamine blend. But we don't miss out. Instead, we're given permutations of soul, prog rock and acid house, perhaps making for the most expansive record this guy has been responsible for.

Review: Don't worry, if this is the first encounter with Nolan Potter's Nightmare Band. Take it from us the troupe are anything but the stuff hiding beneath the bed and in the closet. In reality, they're nothing short of overtly-positive, life-affirming, and celebratory, calling on vast walls of sound and to create commanding avant-folk and psychedelic rock overtures. Stylistically, there's a mythological undercurrent, like being transported to some strange alternate dimension, where nymphs play Fenders and wizards a Wurlitzer. Quite where the inspiration comes from is anyone's guess (well, OK, a little research will tell you plenty), but let's not get bogged down in conceptuality. Songs such as "Seahorse Retreat" are perhaps the best examples of the act's ability to make surrealism feel universally accessible, ode to joy and love and happiness. "Pity In The City" is a jangling combination of acoustic and plugged-in guitars, Potter's vocals lilting atop incredibly complex arrangements.

Review: In the range of being able to build walls of noise that come up against those made by My Bloody Valentine (see album opener "Utro" for example), Gnoomes' sound splashes hues of Boards Of Canada with a wild and unique style of spaced-out, alien disco rock. With comparisons to be found in the distorted sounds of Holy Fuck and Does It Offend You, Yeah? "Mu!" sees the Russian four-piece push their sound to the furthest it's been since having it remixed by Krautrock icon Ulrich Schnauss. Highlights: "Ursa Major" & the psychedelic star gaze of "Sine Waves Are Good For Your Health".

Review: This third release thus far this year to issue forth from Anton Newcombe's Berlin base will be as manna from thrift-shop heaven for anyone who's hooked on the heavy-lidded, hallucinogenic and cheekily retro-aligned stylings by which they've accidentally defined a sizeable proportion of the current 'psych' scene. Drifting from a Thirteenth Floor Elevators cover that features The Black Angels' Alex Maas on jug to the Slovakian 'Prsi Prsi', this collection of excursions and altered states is a good deal more compelling that its title would suggest, rater testimony to the BJM's continued prominence over all the classicist realms they survey.

Review: If you missed The Comet is Coming's brilliant debut album, Channel The Spirits, first time around, help is at hand. Happily, the Leaf label has decided to reissue the Mercury Music Prize nominated album, expanding it to two discs via the addition of 2015's similarly sublime Prophecy EP and a trio of previously unheard wig-outs. The genius of the London combo's music lies in their unique and eccentric approach to musical fusion. While their roots lie in fusing spiritual jazz and freaky psychedelic rock, keen listeners will hear a myriad of other influences and inspirations seeping into their distinctive instrumental compositions, from spiraling electronica, Afrobeat and skewed funk, to ambient, dub, drum and bass, Roots Manuva and low-slung industrial funk.

Review: It takes precisely two minutes of "Tainted Lunch" to realise that Warmduscher really don't give a flying funk what you think. The sort of band who are happy with the strange and rather hallucinatory world they've created for themselves - ideal trippers, if you like.
Opening with the Iggy Pop collaboration "Rules Of The Game", the London outfit are informed by everything from hip hop ("Burner", featuring legend Kool Keith), early Red Hot Chili Peppers ("Midnight Dipper"), post-punk ("Blood Load") and experimental, grungy scuzz, if that's really a thing ("Grape Face"). The result is an album that's pretty much impossible to categorise, which although increasingly common in the genre-less today, rarely presents itself in such a fascinating, abrasive and unapologetic form. Where from here is anyone's guess, simply because the band could quite literally go anywhere from here. Hence closer "Tiny Letters" coming across like the deranged child of 1950s balladry.
