  2. The Chill (6:48)
  3. Unrepentant (6:26)
  4. Privilege (7:37)
Review: Following on from last year's God Is Change cassette on Opal Tapes, Butler delivers a dance floor EP of sorts for the Black sub-label. "The Chill" is a droning techno track with a difference; underpinned by chattering percussion and mysterious chimes, it also features the sound of iron bars dropping on a concrete floor, looped to infinity. The melancholic synth riffs that soars through the arrangement has some resemblance of Detroit techno, but it is rooted in too much fuzzy abstraction to sound like a retro copy. The mood changes on "Unrepentant"; there, Butler seeks to relive Chicago's glory days, albeit channelled through a degraded Nation filter. Who knows what he'll get up to next?

Review: The second part of Nigel "Perseus Traxx" Rogers' Ellis De Havilland double-header (his first since 2013's similarly formatted Born Out Of Cheapness & Frustration) continues where its' predecessor left off, with the producer showcasing more "straight to tape" hardware compositions. The seven tracks vary in tone, tempo and texture, from the druggy throb of "Track 1", and fierce-but-weird "Track 2", to the clicking, outer-space hypnotism of "Track 4", and Jamal Moss style acid onslaught "Track 6". They're all subtle variations on a theme, created with a relatively sparse selection of old drum machines, synths and samplers, but there's enough variety to keep things fresh and interesting.

  1. Moonland (Barnt remix) (8:11)
  2. Moonland (Jens Uwe Beyer remix) (7:30)
Review: The mysterious Dream Weapons came through earlier this year with the Holger label's third outing, an EP which contained the lovely "Moonland" cut - a moody, lo-fi house cut for the thinkers. This time around, Holger have cherry-picked a couple of remixers to remould the tune into something totally different, starting with man of the moment Barnt (Comeme, Hinge Finger) who proceeds to inject some of his weirdness into the tune...a hypnotic bundle of synths is wound over apocalyptic strings and a steady kick drum. Jens Uwe Beyer, on the other hand, gets rid of all forms normality and chucks a 4/4 beat underneath what is basically a doom metal track - droning guitars and twisted vocals all the way!

Review: Swedish techno-punk pranksters Frak have been at it since 1987 and still going strong as staples of the notorious Borft imprint. Jackmaster's Ultimate Hits label scores this crucial double pack from Frak which sees the trio throw down some gnarly and snarling acid jams. The grinding and tunnelling "Travel" is the kind of jam you'd hear rocking the Golden Pudel at peak time on a Friday night. "No Adventure" is some nice boompty acid for good measure while "Peace Ticket, Return" is some gutsy proper acid nastiness for even better results. The short two minute interludes throughout the album of improvised modular magic are fascinating, as is the emotive deep house journey "Bus To Abyss" which was quite a surprising highlight.

  1. Moon Lasers (2:12)
  2. Drifting To Parts Unknown (7:55)
  3. Ten 18 (6:47)
  4. Enjoy The Flesh (6:24)
Review: Escape The Matrix sees the return of NYC sewer dweller Gut Nose, back on the Styles Upon Styles label that issued his superb 2014 album Filthy City. "Ten 18" is a noisy, loopy roller with a chopped up vocal thrown into the mix. It also has a punky undercurrent. Such rough and ready elements are pervasive elsewhere on Escape The Matrix. "Moon Lasers" revolves around a loose rhythm, dubbed out drums and atmospheric textures, while "Drifting to Parts Unknown" follows a similar approach, albeit to a faster tempo and noisier soundscapes. Gut Nose is also adept at making more musical tracks, and on "Enjoy Thy Flesh" even embraces jazzy keys, but he's primarily interested in noisy, at the fringes techno, as the fuzzy, frazzled live drums on "Crafty Gambit" demonstrate.

  2. Ialysas (3:05)
  3. Atayalic (6:34)
  4. Ururu (7:25)
Review: Prolific L.I.E.S. cohort Gunnar Haslam inaugurates the Kavalanic Languages label with some of his sinewy, head-twisting hardware techno machinations, showing us just how to make militant techno as thrilling as possible and leaving ample room for experimental weirdness as well. Opening track "Sostanze" is a taut and wiry beast that will lay waste to mild-mannered crowds, clubs and DJs, while "Atayalic" ramps up the industrial influences for a scary-in-a-good-way romp through evilest techno. "Ururu" is less malevolent but no less kinetically charged, firing off a wealth of pinging percussive synth tones that sound rather modular in nature. Beatless experiment "Ialysas" is no slouch either, pinging out unsettling tones of a discordant nature and creating something quite compelling in the process.

  3. Sinapsi Sonora (7:11)
  4. State Of Induced Hibernation (5:06)
Review: Antonio Marini aka Healing Force Project is back with the Tranhumanism EP on Ambiwa. Starting out with the ever mysterious "Methodical Ear", it's more of the same later on "Sinapsi Sonora" which like the previously mentioned track sounds like the dusty and emotive deepness of early Sound Signature via the tough and rusty swing of fellow Italians Relative; a nice touch indeed. He then gives us the brooding and hypnotic "Shadow Manipulation Of The Mind" awash in delay drenched organs and skeletal vintage drum machine flair. But the fierce yet restrained functionalism of "State Of Induced Hibernation" with its near tribal moments supported by a series of exotic and mindbending drones is pure bliss. We'll say it again: Marini is undoubtedly one of the most underrated producers in techno at the moment!

  1. Anxiety (5:21)
  2. Scatterbrain (4:53)
  3. Data_Loss (6:06)
  4. Data_Ctrl (3:59)
Review: Chris Weeks has been building up the Kingbastard catalogue for a long time now, generally taking a self-reliant approach in the underground electronica scene where CD-r releases reign supreme. He's been a key figure on Ambidextrous since the label launched back in 2008, and now he's committed to wax with a range of crunched up leftfield sonics for the machine-loving crowd. "Anxiety" is a melodic cut with a house-minded structure, but there's a lot of production acrobatics and compositional swerves taking place within this framework. "Scatterbrain" is more overtly out there, tapping up the kind of heavily processed sounds that producers like Paradroid have championed in the past. "Data_Loss" strike a heavy blow somewhere between dubstep and electro, and "Data_Ctrl" ups the tempo for a rabble-rousing exercise in mind-bending machine music.

  5. Heschdolby (6:01)
Review: Zurich outfit Les Points have previously impressed by developing a distinctively lo-fi, do-it-yourself style of tech-house. That style comes to the fore on this Eklo-released 12", with each of the five tracks bristling with the sounds of outboard hardware and spontaneous sound processing. They begin with the acid-flecked, electro/techno fusion of "ProjectErzame", before showcasing the crunchy drum machine handclaps, chiming melodies and bustling acid bass of "IDM778". Elsewhere, they successfully go deeper and woozier via the head-nodding hum of "Projektsektork", pay a whirlwind visit to the Motor City on the unpronounceable "Projektjezmueschlueggend" (think early Model 500 dragged through a hedge backwards), and reach for the stars on EP highlight "Hescdolby".

Review: UntilMyHeartStops makes a welcome return to the fray with this sublime four-tracker from emergent Swedish producer Martinou, previously found sneaking around the sewer sender label. As is customary with UMHS releases, the conventions of house and techno are masked by a veil of mystery, where billowing pads and crooked rhythms dig past common or garden variety club tracks to offer something more sublime. From the slender, shimmering "Unaware" to the weighty thrum of "Excessive, Surely" and on to the delicately poised "I Don't Wanna Wanna Feel", Martinou proves himself to be entirely in tune with the hidden depths of the label.

Review: Kassem Mosse and Mix Mup re-engage their MM/KM project for the debut transmission from The Trilogy Tapes and Palace - previously only available from the skate brand's London store or the TTT online shop!! Together the Leipzig pair were responsible for the excellent self-titled mini album on The Trilogy Tapes in 2013, but since then their joint efforts have been restricted to several fine remixes of TCB and Kowton for Die Orakel and Livity Sound respectively. This three-track 12" will satisfy the cravings of anyone that has been missing their decidedly esoteric approach to house and techno, veering off down a pitch-bent procession of rhythmic tones on A-side track "Tane" that is reminiscent of Beatrice Dillon. There is more of a wholesome crunch to "Chorus Beach" with thick and emotive pads that immediately lodge themselves in the listener's affections, whilst "Watching Gischt" is delightfully lopsided house music, the drums marauding drunkenly forwards with a delicious clomping sensation.

Review: Moon Temple is the new project of Gabriel Andruzzi and if the name sounds vaguely familiar; you probably know him from his involvement in a popular punk-funk band that was active in the mid noughties. This nine track album is Andruzzi's first release under this alias and follows up Moon Temple I, also released this week. According to WT, the album is a collection of "delicate interludes, acid stompers and weirdo spastic mechanical marches." Starting out with the early nineties, Plastikman sounding hardware techno jam "The Short Dance", there's the pounding and stripped hard techno of "Ocean Of Storms" (which calls to mind locals like Shawn O'Sullivan) and the deep and drifting hypnotism of "Lake Of Forgetfulnes".
