The Gift (40 Thieves Disco mix) (6:36)
The Gift (40 Thieves Disco dub) (7:38)
The Gift (40 Thieves beats) (4:26)
Review: After an absence of a few years, 40 Thieves return to Leng Records with one of their most special releases to date: a hook-up with long-time Patrick Adams collaborator Gary Davis and long serving soulstress Cinammon Jones. What's on offer is a re-make of one of Jones' songs, 'The Gift', whose sweet lyrics celebrate the arrival of a new day. 40 Thieves take, explored first in the A-side 'Disco Mix', sounds like it was designed to be danced to during a San Francisco sunrise - think dub disco delays, hypnotic grooves, bubbly electronics, languid guitar licks and gentle melodies. Over on the flip, they take the track further into 'woozy 6am open air dancing territory' on a superb, stretched out 'Disco Dub' mix, before peppering a killer drum track with spaced-out electronics on the 'Beats' version.

Love Died In Our Arms (4:36)
Review: Dot Allison debuted in 1999 with her Aftergow album and ever since has kept fans old and new enthralled with her voice. Heart-Shaped Scars was a follow-up 12 years later than won plenty of plaudits and now the label it came on serve up this bonus 7" with two new cuts. There is the rather bleakly but beautifully alluring 'Ghost Orchid' and then 'Love Died in our Arms' which is a reference to a past musical life in which Dot made trip hop. It also comes with a download code to unlock a third and final bonus cut named 'Heart-Shaped Scar.'

The Eagle (6:07)
Elevation (4:48)
Review: Alphonse pens a love letter to jungle on this new EP for Klasse Wrecks. It's a flurry of drum breaks and powerful rhythms all served up through a classical lens with hefty bass underpinning each tune. This is a real journey into jungle with epic 12-minute plus opener 'Android Mash' twisting and turning through a flurry of tumbling snares, police sirens and yearning vocals. 'The Eagle' is a more soulful sound but still dense in its arrangement and tense in its rhythms. 'Elevation' closes down with plunging basslines and dark soul atmospheres.

Review: Armand Hammer is the New York-based duo of ELUCID and Billy Woods and now they are back with their first new album in two years. We Buy Diabetic Test Strips is a debut long player for Fat Possum and it is their biggest work yet with plenty of high-profile guest spots from the likes of JPEGMAFIA, EL-P, Kenny Segal, Black Noi$e, Preservation, DJ Haram, Child Actor, Sebb Bash, August Fanon, and more. Since they were last recording together, ELUCID and billy woods have both released critically acclaimed solo albums but show that they save some special magic for when they join up in the studio.

Review: Many of ASC's albums never made it to wax first time round, something he's now addressing via a swathe of vinyl additions of classic back catalogue releases. The latest to get this treatment is 2014's 'Truth Be Told', a set that's amongst the San Diego-based producer's most inspired ambient works (and there have been many over the years, as well as plenty of killer experimental d&b and spaced-out techno). While it naturally makes use of processed field recordings and cutting-edge sound design techniques, 'Truth Be Told' is a very nostalgic ambient album. Those with a deep knowledge of the 1990s works of Pete Namlook will feel right at home, while the slowly pulsing chords, immersive pads and gently unfurling lead lines reminded us of Sun Electric's often overlooked classic '30.7.94 Live'.

Review: Some of Europe's finest purveyors of underground sounds come together on this fourth rase from the One Eye Witness label out of the Netherlands. Asphalt DJ kicks off and lays out a steamroller of a techno banger in 'Blades' which is pulsing, hard hitting but supple. RDS gets for a much more minimal and cosmic vibe on the tight and bouncy 'TH Only' then Ste Roberts brings some machismo and texture to 'Tune Pitch Decay' with its industrial tech aesthetic. Tammo Hesselink closes down the EP with the loose and bendy tones, scattered hits and late night minimal eeriness of 'Untitled 42.'

Already an established podcast mix series, now a fully-fledged label, this launch release lays down everything we need to know as we flip and fly between the flavours. Cats like Lou Raw lay down golden woozy UKG skippery, B is all about the lo-fi flavours and warm and warping house and Olli Oski and EE bring the EP to a wonderful psycho dub finale. The artist who is also known for his work in Passion Dance Orchestra and as Laurentius is a master of super cool jazz and laid-back lounge electronics that have hints of 80s nostalgia without being too slavish. Originally this one came only on CD and digitally and now it makes its first foray onto vinyl thanks to First on Vinyl out of Japan. Tracks like the lush 'Pulse' are gloriously airy and spring-like montages while there is a little woozy romance to 'Before It Enters My Mind'.

After an EP of covers of tunes that inspired his last album this month, 'The Grounding Process' features four stripped down versions of tracks from 'Flicker'. Bell says 'World of Echo' was written at the height of an obesession with Scouse indie/skifflers The La's, while 'She Calls The Tune' was penned on tour wioth Oasis in 1999, particularly dear to Bell as it ended a long period of writer's block.

It features Amsterdam-based artist Benny Sings - who recently had his ART album reissued on Sings - returning with an all new and new eighth solo studio album. For the first time, it is one that finds him working with a single producer throughout - and that producer is the well known beatmaker Mr Kenny Beats. It was a partnership that came together after a chat over social media and the pair immediately felt comfortable with each other. Benny instructed Kenny that he wanted to make the biggest record he has to date and that's what they have done.

HIs 2019 album Gelin Aysem on Arsivplak is a gold standard from the genre and one of its key singles gets serve dup on its own 7" with a special insert. Review: Big Youth is self-described as a "contemporary Christian, a man of God, martial artist and system engineer as well as a DJ and producer. Here he lays down some classic and heartwarming reggae sounds with The 18th Parallel serving up the dub. 'Man With A Mission' is a fleshy rhythm with great horns and yearning vocals that are buttery smooth and silky soft. The flip side is a smart studio dub with more room for the fills, echoing his and molten chords to resonate. A timeless and fruity 7" for sure.

On Romantic, his latest full-length excursion, he keeps his options open too, offering up a range of loved-up songs (in both English and Italian) that variously doff a cap to Nat King Cole, big band jazz, jazz-funk, Barry White (the Love Unlimited Orchestra style 'Romantic Song'), string-laden tear-jerkers ('Loneliness'), funked-up disco-jazz ('What's Your Name'), Rhodes-heavy soul (a gospel-influenced cover of Marvin Gaye's 'What's Going On' that's worth the admission price on its own) and breezy Latin beats ('Papa Loves Mambo').

Circle Dance (Nacho Patrol remix)

Tortuga (Valet remix)
Review: Following the critical success of last years mini-LP The Last Tortuga, Black Deer is back on Emotional Response with a 4 track remix EP featuring friends and alumni Nacho Patrol, Luke Wyatt, Sad City and Valet. William Burnett returns to the label in the form of a remixes EP that takes his original productions and hands it to a broad selection of today's finest electronic producers, plus a rare outing from one of the label's favourite pyschedelic experimentalists. While Danny Wolfer's Legowelt project needs little introduction, it was only right that his inclusion on the label came from a more cosmic outlook. With must have EPs and a long player offered, his afro-infused Nacho Patrol moniker is a must check. In Circle Dance the original is taken by the hand down to an afro-tech-funk'n'breaks basement for one of his best remixes to date and rightly so for one of his old buds. Luke Wyatt follows with an uplifting and warped retake on Meditation. The kraut influence of the original is built on with fuzz guitar and a solo that builds across the track to a higher peak. Play this at sunrise for reaffirmation of life itself. Next is a big favourite of the label, catching the ear from his first release on Underwater Peoples
and a lush follow up for Phonica. His pure ambience of a remix strips everything back and lets the 4th World shine. With a 2nd EP due on Phonica, look out for something on this label soon. Finally, one of the main influences on the label when it started a few years back. Valet aka Portland multi-instrumentalist and mum, Honey Owens offers a deep, beautiful and haunting retake, adding whispers, drones, guitar, toms, keys and intonations to swallow you whole.

Review: Budapest based label Blunt Shelter Records serves up this gorgeous new 7" from the collaborative duo of BluntOne and Baen Mow. This pair really come correct with their next-level jazz and lofi hip hop sounds, with dreamy and heady and stoned ambient pads. First up is 'How I Feel (feat Georgia Anne Muldrow)', a late night and hazy joint for smoking to, 'Babylon Rots' is another wispy, emotive and barely-there joint that makes an indelible mark and instrumentals of each are also included. Hopefully we will hear lots more from this outfit in future.

For that reason, few sit close to him when it comes to the creative powerhouses of the 1960s avant-garde jazz movement. His Porto Norvo album was recorded during a 1967 session in the Netherlands and is regarded as one of his best works. Bassist Maarten van Regteben Altena and drummer Han Bennink joined the session and after it being out of print for many decades before now it gets a long overdue reissue on high-quality wax. This latest offering takes the form of a various artists EP and opens with the brilliantly spaced out electronic house of'Lorenzo Chiabotti & Just_Me's 'Darko FM'. Review: Musique Plastique (Visible Cloaks/Pedro) rescues a nearly lost soundtrack to a Belgian avant-theatrical work from the 80s. Conceived in 1986 and part of the experimental show of the same name directed by Guy Cassiers, Daedalus is a fascinating score for small chamber orchestra (cello, violin, clarinet), voices, percussion and electronics. Recorded and mixed at Eastfield Recording Studios in Belgium, the music accompanies an ancient story told in an unconventional way by a company of 45 young disabled actors, who almost avoided completely verbal interventions - communicating exclusively through gestures, movement, costumes and sound.

Compiled by El Dragon Criollo and El Palmas, it is a great selection of tracks from all throughout the group's career from the early 60s onwards. They remain one of Venezuela's most celebrated bands not least in part thanks to their creativity, vibrant sound and vital rhythms, all served up with youthful energy. This collection is a testament to that with horn-and-percussion heavy stompers, Latin rock n roll and staccato grooves all providing a real musical flex.

They are all coming on tidy 10" eco vinyl in mad limited numbers and next up is Norman Connors and Bembe Segue. Connors dropped his superb 'Mother of the Future' in 1975 and it is a mad jazz dancer with layer upon layer of Afro drumming, loose percussion and expressive vocal ad-libs. Flip it over and we're taken to 2008's live version of the same tune by Bembe Segue. It's a little less intense but no less busy, with silky jazz grooves and new vocals layering in some future soul.

Review: Stay Current stalwart D Briggs pitches up on DJ Monchan's Dailysession Records for the very first time, bringing with him a melodious and positive trademark sound that should appeal to both nu-disco DJs and confirmed house heads. 'Dreamin', which he's presented in instrumental and vocal mix forms, is fundamentally a summery deep house record, but many of its cheery musical elements (bubbly synth sounds, happy-go-lucky melodies and a D-Train style bassline) are more often heard in retro-futurist boogie and proto-house inspired nu-disco records. Those who want a hazier deep house interpretation should check Cedar Sound Workshop's wonderfully warm flipside remix, while label boss Monchan's take is a spacey, two-step electro delight.

Quando Mi Dicevi (2:47)
A Volte Sembra Stia Per Finire (4:52)
Review: Barcelona-based duo Silvia Kostance and Viktor L. Crux make visceral noise and raw industrial a real art form. They have done so now across lots of EPs and two albums on the likes of Mannequin Records, B.F.E Records and Magia Roja. They bring post-punk and EBM to their work but always with their own signature sounds at the core. Their renowned live shows inform their recorded music too and Toda la mentira sobre Dame Area is the first of two twin LPs that find the pair at their most explicit and emphatic. Their darkly seductive avant pop and mix of dub and insurgent noise all make for another superb album.

Review: Hybrid Vigor is a privately pressed album from 1984 by the legendary Myles Davis and Ray Herrmann. It is an outlier that sits up there with fellow greats of its ilk such as the likes of David Byrne and Brian Eno's My Life in the Bush of Ghosts or Laurie Anderson's Big Science. It is inquisitive and enchanting, with clean melodies and gentle rhythms sinking you into a mindful state. Tunes like 'Romantic History' have inquisitive monologues stitched in next to the drum breaks and 'Break A Match' has gentle rock riffs next to new age ambiance. Lovely stuff.

Sandia Livermoore Lab (6:28)
Review: In more recent years, Madrid's Eduardo De La Calle has brought us some muscly, steely-eyed techno through his own Analog Solutions imprint, but the artist's reach spans back to the early noughts and to labels such as Hard Fandango and Thump Electroniks, when his particular strain of techno had already been overshadowed by the foreboding minimal wave. However, fine connoisseurs such as Boddika can smell out a real talent and this is why the Nonplus man has decided to release a second EP from the enigmatic producer. Much to the traditional Boddika taste, "Papoose Lake" is a watery piece of atmospheric techno with a driving rhythm; the same can be said about "Groom Lake" even when considering its more molecular approach. Over on the B-side, "SDI" breaks out the jungle loops amid a stop-start technoid rhythm of industrial proportions, and "Sandia Livermore Lab" heads directly to the big room with its effective 4/4 loop and range of organised sonics. BOOM.

Review: Lisa Decker makes a return with two new singles here that are taken from her upcoming album which is due in May of this year. It comes two years after her debut with the Japanese jazz trio Nautilus and marks something of a conceptual shift in her sound. 'Love & Hope' finds her turn in a stylish jazz vocal with funky bass loops and organic drums and percussion that straddle many different genres. 'Summer Child' then sinks into a nice smooth jazz-funk vibe with soft focus chords bringing a touch of class to her breezy vocals.

Review: The short-lived Dils was the brain child of Californian brothers Chip and Tony Kinman, who across their brief four-year tenure from 1976 to 1980, managed to craft a small but integral bevvy of minimal, proto-no wave punk that flew in the face of the more snot-nosed breakneck pace of the scene at large. They also exuded slightly more melodic tendencies, earning them the nickname "punk rock Everly Brothers", but make no mistake 'Dils Dils Dils' still offers enough abrasion to peel plaster. The one true LP from the group is made up of their slew of early singles including the essential anthem 'You're Not Blank', while the B-side is rounded out with various live cuts from their momentous peak years. Ending their original run at the dawn of the 80s with support slots for both The Clash, and finally Black Flag; The Dils were the real deal (dil?) and their brief but essential discography is awaiting reappraisal and rediscovery.

Review: Following great releases on Dansu Discs, Carpet & Snares and Timeisnow, Italian DJ and producer Davide Piras aka DJ Chupacabra returns this week on the second part of Innsbruck-based label Mont Lake's five-year celebrations. His track on side A 'Growler' is a dusty and swing-fueled deep house jam that is as much off-kilter as it is absolutely infectious. Over on the flip, it's over to Mias Void - better known as Matthias Vogt - the veteran German producer who delivers another offbeat cut on the darkly emotive hi-tech soul of 'We Used To Be Detroit' receiving a remix by Berlin's Iron Curtis up next, injecting it with some mad breakbeats.

Review: The mighty Dubforce served up his essential self titled solo album back in November of 2020. It packed a punch across the eight tunes and immediately sold out despite the import price. One of the standouts from it now makes its way on to its own 7". That tune is 'Liar Dub,' the sort of fat and heavy but tulles tune that could be from a mixing desk in 790s Jamaican or made in a hi-tech studio in Japan next week. The sub bass is all comforting, the hi hats leaving snaking tales and twisted vocal sounds add extra hooks. On the flip, 'Track 2' is a nice bit of contemporary Japanese roots.

Review: Candy Dulfer cooked up a magical blend of jazz, disco, soul, dance, and r&b from across the ages with this album, which was originally released in 2017. Candy has worked with some of popular music's biggest stars after first shooting to fame more than a quarter of a century ago with Dave Stewart and their #1 worldwide hit 'Lily Was Here'. She has also been named checked by Prince who sang "When I want sax, I call Candy" in the video to 'Partyman.' With Together she offered her own view on the state of all these sounds and more with plenty of catchy vocal hooks, danceable grooves and timeless production that radiates warmth.

Review: Four new tracks from EB Flow mark the latest release from the ever prolific Constant Sound label, as ever providing solid and dependable dancefloor gear that boasts a myriad of different flavours. 'Sunshine' wastes no time setting up a strutting, Van Helden-esque groove and lets it roll, adding a few vaguely nostalgic samples on top. 'Running' has more of a breaks feel, harking back to the days of rave's roots when breaks and acid could sit together naturally rather than in different genre pigeonholes. 'Before' is the most minimal of the four, peppered with frisky garage snares and a subtle but ultimately devastating filter breakdown, while a feelgood gospel-style vocal gives the closer, 'Searching', a lovely optimistic tint. Constant Sound continue to deliver.

Opener 'Fallen' is an unrelenting steamroller with hits peeling off the fleshy, bubbly, heavy groove. 'Lazer Riddim' gets more twitchy with blasts of bass and shooting synths and then 'Time Warp Tonic' gets well rave-up with its cantering drums and visceral synth patterns. Last of all is the double time tech head-wrecker that is 'Blue Energy Drink (feat JD Loom).'

EBS DC1-48 90/0 Reversed Polarity DC Power Adapter Cable (48cm)
Cat: 941990 Rel: 03 May 23

EBS DC power adaptor cable - polarity converter.
Notes: Do you use pedals that don't match the outputs of your power supply? With EBS new power adapter cables, there's a way to solve most matters.

It sucks when you realize your coolest vintage pedal or latest digital processor-driven unit can't be fed from your pedalboard power supply because they are thirstier or uses different power inputs than your power supply features. At worst, you may even skip bringing your favourite toys to avoid the hassle. However, with the new EBS adapter cables, you can solve many of these issues easily and save the space that those extra power supplies may occupy.

Need to convert a 2.1 mm plug to 2.5 mm? No problem.
Need more current than you get from one output? No problem.
Need 18 or 24V DC power from 9 and 12V outputs? No problem.
You can even change the polarity from the common Center Negative to Center Positive using one of the new EBS adaptor cables.

Here's how you do it:
To go from 2.1 to 2.5 mm, use the DC1-48 90/0 2.5 adaptor.
Want to change the polarity? Use the DC1-48 90/0 RP adaptor.
To increase the current, use the DC1-48 90/0 PAR and connect two outputs from your power supply. The total current will be the current from both outputs added together.*
To increase the voltage, use the DC1-48 90/0 SER and connect two outputs from your power supply. The total voltage will be the voltage from both outputs added together.*

* IMPORTANT! Requires a power supply with isolated, floating outputs.

Review: Yu Asaeda's been putting out a whole range of quality, bass-centric sounds under the name ENA since the late 2000s, but these have come out on a rather sporadic basis. Appearances for the infamous 7even Recordings was followed by material on Samurai Horo, the excellent Hidden Hawaii and, more recently, the Samurai label's offshoot, Horo. Divided: Body is so much more than a mere 'bass' EP, and it actually manages to veer off into some pretty strange and imperceptible sounds that remind us of the material emanating from the PAN consortium. For instance, the opening "11th Divided" manages to create a raw, loose groove out of fractured synth sounds, which is followed up nicely by the swarming drones operating in the higher ends of "12th Divided". Over on the flip, "13th Divided" launches a subtle yet hefty groove made up of what sound like bass pops made from a monophonic synth, which leaves "14th Divided" to linger in its dreary pool of fuzzy drones and washed-up sonics. A massive, merited TIP!

Breaking away from the bangerized, 'Part Of The Order' is a junglist's fever dream, occupying the liminal spaces between rollage, hard heat and liquidation in equal measure. On it, tribal drum grooves ('Planet's Rhythm') and lo-fi breaks ('Disco Undertaker') weave between bursts of heavenly synthwork and existential vocal samples. Even weirdo art-pop jungle rears its head ('J.W.'s Experiment'), proving this one of the weirder ends to De Roos' catalogue.

It has become a cult classic ever since and is their one and only ever album. It now comes reissued with a 24"x24" poster & original insert with lyrics courtesy of Mental Groove. The rhythms throughout are stark but compelling, with jangling guitars layered up over the chilly synths and dark, deadpan vocals delivered up top in a matter of fact style. Though this is idiosyncratic music with its very own lexicon, the feelings of which the artists speaks are familiar to us all even if the methods are not: love songs, rueful reflection and heart ache are things we can all relate to. 'EverythingUneverKnewUwanted' is a particularly dense track of abstractions that reveal more beauty with each listen. 'Seed Perfuming' is all broken bass and reflected melody that shimmers and shines in a post-dubstep fashion and 'Sobbing' is avant-pop gem with a soaring vocal from Rosie Ruel amongst heavy as you like hits and bass.

Review: Cleveland Francis, the stalwart of US black folk, coined the term "soulfolk" to describe his uniquely bleak style of acoustic music. Growing up and coming to prominence in the state of Virginia, he rarely missed an opportunity to play at every college campus, coffee shop, bar and odd corner he could find. Now some of his earliest and most important recordings get compiled into this double 21-track anthology, 'Beyond The Willow Tree', which, like no other, does wonders in chronicling the experience of black segregated youth in the 60s and 70s.

Review: Pedestrian Verse is a critically acclaimed album by Frightened Rabbit, whose rapidly blooming career was cut short by the death of singer Scott Hutchison in May 2018. It has now been a full decade since the band dropped the mini-masterpiece and so it gets remastered at half speed and reissued by Atlantic with the full and original 12-track album on LP next to a bonus 12" with 11 extra tracks. This was the band's fourth studio album and the only one to feature guitarist and keyboardist Gordon Skene. The record is inspired in part by a break up and finds each of the members of the band stepping up their contribution to the songwriting. It's a great piece of modern indie history.

An interesting sonic take on the absence of culture or civilization, the LP is a rapturous, entirely unique bridge between indie, art and noise rock, and is packed with rippling nuances and details that make Greer's voice sound quite literally drowned. A strange, dreamy and breathtaking take on a sound that Greer's built up over years.
