Review: Splash down to 1978-80: influential Philly funk troupe Breakwater gave the world two albums over two years.Full focus on slow jams and soulful fusion, the Breakwater melting pot is just as strong in jazz and Latin as it is soul and funk. Here we're treated to a selection of the best moments from Breakwater and Splashdown (minus the famous Daft Punk-sampled "Release The Beast") such as the unforgettable Floydian chorus of "That's Not What We Came Here For", the soaking wet bass and tight bright horns of the raunchy boogie jam "Do It Till The Fluid Gets Hot" and the sunshine soul of the sublime "Say You Love Me Girl". A sharp insight into a band that was criminally short-lived at the time..Rumour is there is a new album on the horizon and they still play live -there were two live uk dates in Jan 2017 already !

  1. On The Floor (Studio 54 mix) (6:39)
Review: One of the true underground heroes of the Detroit techno scene, Dwayne Jensen has been there from the beginning and worked with everyone from Kevin Saunderson to Scott Grooves and Norm Talley, to name but a few. His own productions have featured on a who's who of labels from Soiree, Rawax, his own Fathom imprint and of course London's Landed: who for Record Store Day 2017 present this. Treat yourself to his new edit entitled "On The Floor" (Studio 54 mix). We sure know this one: it's an oldie but a goodie and Jensen shows his deft hand at re-splicing a classic disco tune for modern dancefloors.

  4. Gari Romalis & Lello Di Franco - "Luv Game" (6:53)
Review: In tribute to Record Store Day, the Diggin Disco Deep crew has put together what could be its tastiest 12" yet. Pressed on squeaky clean white vinyl, volume five in the series boasts cuts from some of the edit scene's best-loved talents. Lipski kicks things off with the blissfully wavy loops and languid Balearic house grooves of "Magical Luv", before the Silver Rider hits the mark via the softly spun nu-disco goodness of "Madness". On the flip you'll find EP highlight "When She Moves, I'm Moved" by Folamour, a sax-laden shuffle through deep house/disco fusion that sneakily pays tribute to a wedding party favourite, and the head-in-the-clouds deep house bump of Gari Romalis and Lello di Franco's "Luv Game".

  4. Icarus (JKriv remix) (4:38)
Review: For Record Store Day 2017 Razor-N-Tape presents "Icarus", a slice of chilled out analogue soul by Lovebirds aka Sebastian Doering with remixes. The original is a deep soul jam reminiscent of Roy Ayers' Ramp project, while the Tall Black Guy's remix gets more of an R&B swagger on in style. We particularly enjoyed JKriv's lush little boogie down rendition, which really hit that sweet spot in all its neon lit glory. Each mix gets its own side in this double 7" pack, with stunning full color artwork, making it a truly special package perfect for both

  1. Movin (Red Greg edit) (9:29)
  2. Desire (Red Greg edit) (5:26)
  3. Trinidad Duke (Red Greg edit) (5:30)
Review: Here's a tasty Record Store Day offering: Red Greg, on Moton, delivering a trio of edits of obscure cuts from his seemingly endless record collection. Ten-minute A-side "Movin" is an undulating disco treat built around a killer bassline, twinkling melodies, punchy orchestration and one hell of a female vocal. On the flip you'll find the jaunty, horn-heavy disco-funk bump of "Desire", a superb rework of a barely known, bilingual gem, and the spiraling Caribbean disco-funk insanity that is peak-time workout/synthesizer wig-out "Trinidad Duke". All three edits have been "secret weapons" for the dusty-fingered DJ for some time, and can now be yours for less than nine English pounds. What's not to like?

  1. Rollover DJs - "Sir Paul 1985" (5:46)
  2. George Kelly - "Chicks For Free" (5:02)
Review: Point your thumbs skywards and strap yourselves in: the Rollover DJs have decided to rework a funk-fuelled, piano-heavy 1985 disco-funk treat from everyone's favourite animated frog frolicker/former Beatle. "Sir Paul 1985" is undoubtedly something of a cheery treat and offers a perfect opening to Chopshop's Record Store Day 2017 offering. Boss man George Kelly takes control on the flip, gathering his Brothers in Arms to breathe new life into a well-known chunk of headband sporting, MTV-baiting 1980s stadium rock. The fact that he's managed to do something rather dramatic with such a well-known cut - it's now a dub disco extravaganza with additional sleazy synths - is testament to his production skills.

  4. Jamie Paton - "Dept Life" (4:47)
Review: Bahnsteig 23's Record Store Day offering is, rather predictably, something of a lavish treat. It features a quartet of cuts from extended family members stretched over a lovingly produced double 7" package. On the first disc you'll find a fine chunk of skewed, lo-fi drum machine and synth groovery from Sneaker - the slipped Kraftwerk warmth of "Cosmic Xpress" and the tipsy, synth-driven krautrock revivalism of Bullion's "Michy Maus". Turn to the second 7" for the slack-tuned drums, acid-fried stoner rock guitars and alien noises of "Yama Yama" by Il Est Vilaine and the low-slung, industrial-era outsider funk of Jamie Paton's "Dept Life".

Review: With its NYC heartbeat and Paradise Garage relationship, West End's influence disco and soul needs no introduction. For this Record Store Day special we're treated to one of the label's first real retrospectives. First released in 1987, it's the sound of the label looking back and unwittingly highlighting what would later become key influences, DJ tools and sample sources for the house explosion just months later. Sparque's hypnotic guitars and cosmic nuances on "Let's Go Dancin'" and the sassy synth groove (and iconic vocal) on "Do it To The Music" are just two key examples of how West End foretold the future... Not once with the original releases, but within the context of this compilation, too. Who knows how this will sound in another 30 years time?
