Review: While he may have been operating in the underground for some time, Darren Allen's music is only just coming to light through his own Underlying Form label now. There's a range of styles on offer across this EP, kicking off with the subtle pulse of "Feel" before moving on to a distinctly French-flavoured micro house groove on "Inmost Cave" that wouldn't sound out of place on Telegraph Records. On the B side, "Routine Kills Inspiration" switches the mood up with a rougher sound palette, even if the arrangement is still a minimally-minded affair. Then it's left to Vid Vai to drop a complex reworking of "MD Habitat" loaded with intricate textures.

Dream 2C (140 gram vinyl 12")

  1. Dream 2C
  2. Wild Stabs
Review: Defected sub-label Tenth Circle welcomes Brighton based Nathan Pope aka Antenna Happy to deliver their first release of 2015.
Following his rapturously received debut 'Pinto' from last year, Antenna Happy draws on decades of musical experience to produce a stunning double-A side. Title track 'Dream 2c' sits somewhere between house and techno, a slow-burning, emotionally charged cut in which glimmering arpeggiated melodies intertwine to create a unique and beautiful cut. 'Wild Stabs' is tougher, an acid-flecked progressive stomper that slowly builds into a maelstrom of seething chords and stabs.

Body EP (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: RR 003. Rel: 21 Sep 15
  1. Body (6:04)
  2. Day Four (5:59)
Review: Enriching the sonic portal, techno conscript Antenna Happy marks his second release on Reinhardt with two pieces of finely crafted electronic music, in the shape of Body and Day Four.
First to the fold, Body. A dance floor essential, unraveling and built to work the late night hours. Plug into the psychedelic mainframe, and convert to this robust track.
Next up, Day Four takes the reigns. Ghostly pads forged the way before mechanical synths reset the system. Day Four much like its bedfellow Body, holds court in both the worlds of house and techno.
Debuting under his Antenna Happy guise (after a 20 year period absent from releasing music) in September of last year with the esteemed Pinto EP, he has since been commissioned for a vinyl 12" release on Tenth Circle (Defected Records sub-label) and enlisted to remix Alpines, Vessels, Name/age and Ephemerals. Antenna Happy also self-releases a limited edition white label for Record Store Day, and after debuting his new live show in London during February, further club shows and festivals appearances are to follow for this inventive producer.

Review: Parisian oddball house legend Ark teams up again with fellow local and Prospector head honcho Pit Spector to inaugurate Ark Records. A longtime in the making no doubt but worth the wait. Love Supreme LP as the title suggests is a tribute to the legendary John Coltrane and the pair have drafted a who's who of deep house and minimal to lend some hands and ears. Highlights include The Mole's "Molemix"; a sublime serving on reductionist bounce, Frankfurt genius Lo Soul who is as brilliant as ever on the sublime and hypnotic "It's All In There Mix" and Ark himself with his "Free Mix" which is as dusted down and as funked up as we all like it!

  1. Gut Man Cometh (Matthew Herberts Feel Right Rub) (6:40)
  2. Destroyer (FOLD Lean Tape version) (6:59)
Review: The master of wacky techno returns. Matthew Dear donned his notorious Audion moniker again for his first album in years under the guise. The Alpha LP featured about a dozen woozy and disorienting dancefloor destroyers and two selections are present here getting the remix treatment by two fellow innovators. The legendary Matthew Herbert remixes "Gut Man Cometh", scaling back the high-octane psychedelia of the original into a driving journey track with interestingly spiced up vocal samples. Aus Music regular FOLD turns "Destroyer" into a tough deep house stomper with emotive pads being supported by some gutsy stomp and shuffle.

  4. Contemplation (7:37)
Review: Having held it down in Miami for some, Avstin Frank is building his profile as a serious connoisseur of stripped down jams with this release for local label SPORTS. "Isle Of Venice" is a perfect morning-ready treat, all woozy synth tones and delicate percussive shuffle embellished with dubby treatment, while "Timeless Travels" sports a tougher structure without losing the heavy-lidded quality of the opening track. "Contemplation" meanwhile taps into a little touch of French flair with its shuffling groove and jazzy undertones, making a neat foil to the other tracks on offer. Gua Camole's remix of "Isle Of Venice" meanwhile takes a diversion into nagging, oddball minimalism for the crowd who like their beats chopped up.

  3. 1994 (Roberto Rodriguez remix)
  4. Different Channels (feat Andrea Olarte - Jonas Saalbach remix)
Review: Taken from the highly praised debut from Maurice Aymard album Between Stars we present the first remix EP featuring new as well as more seasoned remixers such as Roberto Rodriguez, Sasse, Miguel Puente and Jonas Saalbach. On The A-side Sasse takes a dark Detroit path on his remix of 1994, adding throbbing sub bass and soaring strings for a 5 AM dancefloor workout. Miguel Puente houses up Dead feat Colorado and the result is a very emotional house ride. Roberto Rodriguez drops a beautiful slow jam of 1994, full of nuances of deep house, acid and soulful vibes, perfect for the warm club night in the middle of the winter. Jonas Saalbach from Einmusika transforms Different Channels into a hypnotic and dark journey for the modern dancefloor, making a perfect closing for this fine EP

  1. Beaner - "Maledicta, The Mutiny"
  2. Khrom Ju - "The Ship"
  3. Skirtchaser - "Splice The Machine"
Review: After making their presence felt with the lavish packaging of their first release, the La Mission crew joins forces again with all the characters present for another well-presented journey through leftfield house and ambient compositions. Beaner's "Maledicta, The Mutiny" is the most direct of the offerings, working a mournful cello line and forlorn piano chords over a crisp tech-house rhythm while alien vocal samples inject the weird factor into the track. Krohm Ju meanwhile ditches beats in favour of a bass-laden experimental piece rich in compositional clout, as layers of arpeggios and lingering chords work to create a stirring piece. Skirtchaser then rounds the proceedings off with a low slung deep house affair with a scuffed beat and evocative found sound that feels like a brisk Sunday afternoon in autumn rolled into gently pulsing rhythm.

Review: Laszlo has knocked out this confusing and brilliant ode to house and techno music. These simpleton tracks are gagging for the dancefloor. "Guitar Beat Track Parts 1& 2" launches us into the fragile mental state of this release, with Laszlo recording and performing this Care In The Community P Funk track with his old garage band instruments. "Bleep Me Daddy" uses patterns correlated from Laszlo's last psychiatric assessment, while "Keep Counting" ends this cracking release and returns us to the safety of our own frightening sanctum. Wearing a sort of Carl Craig straightjacket, "Keep Counting" notches up the numbers of recent human horrors.

On remix duties, label favourite MarcAshken turns a wonderful interpretation and the awesome Mihai Popoviciu takes things up a notch with a classy techno work out. Review: Modelmaker is a new London label from the collective minds of Dan Berkson and James What. The esteemed house duo has long been garnishing a range of international imprints with their inventive analogue house and techno sounds, but now they are focussing on their own outlet. Initially launching with a couple of self penned EPs, release number three will be the pair's long-time-in-the-making debut album, and after that a considered selection of other talents will join the ranks as the label pushes on. Always primarily focussed on machine made, texturally rich house and techno, each release will come with unique artwork based on works from What's great grandfather, Conrad Felixmuller, who was a well known German expressionist.

  1. Birdsmakingmachine - "F For Falsas"
  2. Deadbeat - "I don't need nothing if I got You"
  3. Louis Mc Guire - "Buffeting Tuft"
Review: From the label: When trends in music can come and go in the blink of an eye, ten years is a long time to stay relevant, passionate and real on the frontline. From its roots in the Parisian club scene by way of its spiritual home at Fuse in Brussels and so on to the globe-trotting, multi-faceted entity that it is today, Lessizmore is living proof of how to do a decade right. The fundamental heartbeat of this European house and techno institution is the maverick music that its affiliated artists make. Of course what the label sounds like now is not necessarily what the label sounded like back in 2006, but it's telling that some of the original characters are still with the label to this day, while many are long time members of the LIZM family that have joined the ranks over the years. In piecing together this compilation, the idea from label founders Jessica Bossuyt and Pierre Noisiez was simply to represent where their brainchild is at right now, from guests at their events in the early days to more recent collaborators of all kinds. Kicking off the first EP, the finest slithers of percussion and whispers of icy soul weave their way into the sublime, sprawling concoction that Birdsmakingmachine delivers, shifting drum sounds across eleven minutes of delicate yet irresistible groove. Meanwhile on the B-side long time champion of future-minded dub techno Deadbeat creates something of an anthem for the label, turning out an energised workout laden with psychedelic swirls of delay and embellished with a catchy vocoder hook. Recent Lessizmore signing Louis McGuire delves into his lowslung MPC-powered bag of tricks and drops another crucial slab of swinging funk that finds the up and coming artist turning to a moodier sound palette customized for the deepest corners of the night.

Review: Blind Box heads Julien Sandre and Konstress know a thing or two about deep, undulating house grooves, and their continued exploration of immersive cuts for hidden corners of the dance yields further delights on this sixth instalment in the Blind Box series. The first side of this 12" finds the two label bosses twisting out immaculate jams shot through with playful sound design. "Would" locks into a subtle swing and revels in lopsided synth stabs, while "Hedone" plunges into a stunning intricate techno landscape peppered with glitchy tones. On the flip, Julian Alexander follows suit with the crisp, funky "Baku Man" and the more experimental tones of "Casserole".

Review: Burnski's debut album DNA dropped on Constant Sound last year, and now the label have called upon a strong cast of characters to do the remix duty on some of the LP's key tracks. Parisian trio Mandar bring a heart-melting tone to "Another Source" without losing their insistent shuffle, while Diego Krause strips things down with a functional broth of minimal minded business. The original mix of "Another Source" gets a fresh outing, and very fine it sounds too. That leaves it to Laura Jones to twist out a hypnotic electro version of "I Like You".

Review: Slum Science's Hudd Traxx is a label that just won't quit when it comes to proper, head-tripping house music for those who like their grooves serious. That makes Chris Carrier a natural participant, and the unstoppable Frenchman steps up here with a record that proves both his and the label's long-lasting appeal. "Cycle Psycho" is a simmering tech house belter with the requisite amount of funk rubbed into its limbs, while "Dimension 5" switches stance for a nagging acid workout. On the flip "Smoke And Flesh" brings a tougher thrust to the drums and then "Flying Sausage" cools the EP down with a simply fantastic deep house bump to get heads nodding all over the butchers shop.

Review: The fifth instalment of the Hoxton Records story turns to Alan Castro, who has already had a busy year appearing on the likes of For Club, STAMP and Soundterasse. The vibe is stripped down and unhinged on this record, with lead track "El Avion De La Mentira" unfurling in a strange tapestry of samples, found sounds and off kilter synth rubs strapped to a crafty set of drums. Modebaku delivers a more streamlined version of the track that keeps things freaky, but much more linear than the wayward original. "Sequela" on the flip is no slouch in the adventurous department either, with swathes of modulating tones and wild sonic matter flinging around a funky shuffle, which Ted Amber then dutifully bolsters with a rubbery b-line on his more functional but still daring version.

Review: Baby Ford's minimal minded label is back in action with some psyched-out goodness from Alex Celler. The long-serving Greek producer has many strings to his bow, but this release finds him tapping into his foundational sound as a steady ticking groove carries a richly produced bed of chimes and tones for the deepest moments in the dance. Where "Feudade" is a lilting, soothing trip, "Vis A Vis" heads into a more mysterious headspace peppered with nagging rhythmic trysts, crafty licks and fulsome bass to get the synapses popping. It's exactly how stripped down house music should be done, inventive to the last and yet utterly danceable.

Good Day Bad Day EP (140 gram vinyl 12" limited to 220 copies)
Cat: GV 006 . Rel: 05 Dec 16
  1. Derp Journal (6:03)
  2. Bogart Space (6:41)
  3. Good Day Bad Day (7:02)
  4. Flashmelo (7:07)
Review: Long time minimal techno pusher Franklin De Costa steps up to Jersey City label Green Village to thrown down a ruckus with four serious cuts of advanced house and techno. "Derp Journal" may be flippant in name, but the bassline it packs is not to be trifled with, nor the edgy drums and lashings of reverb. "Bogart Space" is a more house-minded affair, but it's still reaching to a contemplative space using unfamiliar sounds. "Good Day Bad Day" gets into a cyclical, psychedelic mood thanks to a trippy synth circling overhead, but then the EP gets dealt a tough finishing blow by the cranked up hustle of "Flashmelo", coming on like a crunchy mid 00s minimal jam of the highest order.
