Belly 002 (12")
Cat: BELLYDANCE 002. Rel: 08 Sep 14
  1. Control (feat Shona Carmen)
  2. Zu
  3. Painting (feat Shona Carmen)
  4. Dark Autumn (Timothy J Fairplay remix)
Review: Manchester artist Belly is back with his second EP of 2014 released through his new inprint Belly Dance and this time he is joined by East End Soul vocalist Shona Carmen & one half of Asphodells Tiimothy J Fairplay on the remix. The second EP see's Belly up the pace slightly from his inagural release moving slightly away of the slow beat of tracks like Dark Autumn and Farewell and embark on a sligtly more up tempo , swing style bordering on the style of Machine Drum. The first track 'Control' is a hazy club track with strong vocals from both Belly & Shona backed up by drum and bass beats which is followed by vocal heavy space beats in the form of 'Zu' . On the flip side we see the real inpact of Shona Carmen with a clubtrack loaded with summer vibes called 'Painting' . The vocals are soulfull and beautiful with a swing tempo and drum patterns that lift throughout. This is followed by Timothy J Fairplay bringing in his own take on 90's chicago garage music with a banging clubtrack remix of Dark Autumn off of Belly Dance 001.

Review: German techno champ Alex Cortex hasn't released an album since 2011's Kihon on Pomelo, but the prolific and long-serving artist is rarely resting on his laurels. Having released just one other EP from Lowtec, Blundar now presents a new untitled LP from Cortex that should satisfy fans of his leftfield approach to techno in all its forms. "Track 2" is a masterclass in how to work breakbeats into techno without sounding forced or false, while "Track 4" blooms from delicate ambience to snagging broken beat with the grace you can only find with such a seasoned vet. Spanning many moods, tempos and rhythms, this is a perfect demonstration of the many engrossing approaches Cortex can attempt and succeed at within the many-sided realm of techno.

Review: Marcus Mumm aka Das Muster lands on Fundamental Records with a monster of a release after recent appearances on Solar One, among other like-minded imprints. The Twin Paradox Series 002 spans pretty much every corner of the electro sphere, starting with the deep and watery bass tones of "Der Lange Weg", the 80's sounding sequences of "Die Welt Der Farben", and the underwater beast that is "Widerspruch". The fifteen-track anthology also includes harder tunes such as "Everything But", the Drexcyian mutant "Zugang", and "Talk To Me", a vocal led piece with a huge low-end and the most gorgeous pads we've heard this week.

  3. Slums Of Grand Central (rusted by Decor) (6:34)
Review: Daze makes a first appearance on Torn Hawk's Valcron Video label with a distinctive trio of adventurous jams hovering on the fringes of the dance. "Slums Of Grand Central" is certainly crafted with the party in mind, but it's a more introspective kind of get down for those who like popping at a slower tempo. Torn Hawk then takes the track to task with a tense revision that comes on like uneasy 90s electronica before Decor lays waste to the surroundings with a slamming remix that pushes into hard techno territory while retaining the wistful tones of the original.

Review: It's taken KOOAAD Music 18 months to deliver a follow-up to their inaugural release, a fine EP from Joe Drive. We'll forgive them, though, because Nemesi - a collection of tracks by composer Filippo Diana that were originally intended to be part of the score to an unreleased movie of the same name - is pretty darn good. Seemingly created entirely using vintage synthesizers and drum machines, the seven tracks are undeniably atmospheric and cinematic. Diana seems to be a master of mood and melody, effortlessly blending rhythms and melodies inspired by the throbbing quirkiness of classic Giallo soundtracks, the soundtrack work of John Carpenter, vintage Detroit electro, and the darker end of Italo-disco (see the fantastic "Sequenza Inseguimento".

Apple Knife (12" + insert)
Cat: BS 006. Rel: 17 Jul 17
  1. Apple Knife (7:51)
  2. Wisdom Of Rumi (7:51)
Review: Fresh to Bird Scarer, fresh to us all; according to Weatherall all correspondence with this mystery new electroid sculptor has been done by letter (to a PO Box no less) and not even he knows who she is. Her music, however, speaks volumes: "Apple Knife" cuts with a crisp arpeggio before dropping into chunky, almost housey electro break. "Wisdom Of Rumi" softens the angularities a little with a break that's not dissimilar to Tone Loc but awash with strange space-aged FX and numinous flourishes. According to Weatherall, he hopes there's more to come from Zu... We do too.

Review: Echo 106 member Bruno Schnuriger goes solo as Francis Juno for Platform Romance, an album shaped synth odyssey for the Mystic & Quantum label, issued on limited white marbled vinyl LP in silk-screen printed sleeve. Very much in line stylistically with previous transmissions on the label, Platform Romance finds Schnuriger channelling all manner of influences through his array of hardware resulting in eight tracks that sounds wholly cohesive despite touching on kosmiche, primitive electronics, acid and electro. It's a great listen from start to finish and there are plenty of cuts you'd want to slam into a mix too, specifically the delightful opener "A Little Bit Of Joy" and "Trains Don't Stop In Brunnen".

  3. Homecoming (MR TC remix) (7:56)
Review: Australian label Hole In The Sky pride themselves on 'releasing the unusual'. That means never sticking to the same thing, and always, repeat, always diversifying their catalogue; after all, they are responsible for bringing the likes of Tame Impala on the scene, so they should be treated with the upmost respect. This time it's Heart People's Homecoming to receive the remix treatment, and London veteran Andrew Weatherall proceeds to transform "Voices" into a pounding, acid-driven house banger still intact with the original's poppy vocals. On the flip, our main man Toulouse Low Trax drops a magnificently leftfield groove to transform "Oceans" into a strange little percussive number filled with murky sub-tones, which leaves MR TC to reframe "Homecoming" into a slow, pulsating glow of bass and abstract melodies lingering like fireflies in mid-air. We've been taken in by the light...

Review: Spanish electronic music sculptor IMP comes through with his second release to date, and it's on the Titan's Halo label, an imprint reserved strictly for the moodiest of electronica experimentations. "Rain Over Orion" would be the perfect companion to an 80's Manga flick, where distant melodic sequences flutter among watery atmospherics and meditative pads; the remix jobs come from Boris Divider, who chucks in a half-time beat and a flurry of machine-like noises, and Brain Machine who delivers the techno makeover in fine style.

Review: "In music, phrygian mode is dissonant, dark, depressive and gloomy. Its use was even forbidden in classical Greece for centuries because it was considered pagan. The sound of phrygian mode is rather exotic..."
Following the excellent Lost Series (Part 1) and (Part 2), Frigio label founder Juanpablo is back, this time with a full five track mini-LP: Darkness gathers above the needle's edge as the Colombian artist delivers the shadow strewn The Hideout. Abstraction is balanced against dancefloor clout across this quintet of underworld electronics. Rhythms curve and bend, scattering into the blackened chasms of "Chrome Light" and "Shadow's Color," before resurfacing into the light of "Indumorg." The title piece burns with a slow intensity. Sinister coils of Acid drip, skies bruise and ash rains before "They Watching You" closes. Juanpablo's builds on his past releasing, melting the lines of Techno, House and Electro and remoulding genres and blurring styles. Eclipsed sounds from the centre of Spain.

Review: Moscow's Isaiah Tapes are also the guys behind the great Baptismo Alpinismo and Longlife Python sub labels, which are doing great things at the moment. Next up for the label is Charles Torris aka Le Matin, who after a bunch cassette only releases over the past few years releases his first full length. The LP album's six tracks and accompanying bonus CD traverse the galaxy of lowdown smack electro; reminiscent of Dopplereffekt like on "Ma Voisine La Pute" or "Yeah", wacky modular synth improvisation as heard on the charmingly titled "Cat Vomit" or deeply sublime minimal techno as heard on "M05 Michel Platini". Brilliant album from start to finish. Tip!

  3. The Man From Another Place (Timothy J Fairplay remix)
  4. The Man From Another Place (Cottam remix)
Review: Hailing from sunny Los Angeles, Plastic Love Records kicks off our first release with an EP from label co-boss Jimmy Maheras. Maheras made his debut in 2011 with his Space Jam EP on the Crosstown Rebels edit sub-label, Rebellion. Since then he's released remixes and singles on Strainjjur, Riff Raff, Supernature, and Left'd.

Maheras's two original tracks showcase his depth with The Man From Another Place being squarely aimed at the big room dance floor and the second track, Arecibo, bringing a little Kraftwerkesque funk. We've commissioned Timothy J Fairplay (Crimes Of The Future) and Cottam (Aus Music / Ruff Draft) for two very unique remixes. Fairplay crunches down the original melody and throws it over the famed amen break to give TMFAP a hands in air late night feel while Cottam's remix brings the dreamy melody closer to acid with storming late night kick ready to knock down a wall.

  1. Die Nibelungen
  2. Bayerischer Wald
  3. Virtuosic Mechanic
  4. Kammermusik
Review: German producer Martin Matiske has been sporadic in his appearances dating back to 2002, but when he releases a record he makes it count. Following previous turns on International Deejay Gigolo and Stilleben, he now brings his fulsome electro sound to Vivod sounding fresher than ever. "Die Nibelungen" draws on a fine tradition of German electronica while using that mechanical melancholy you might find in a Bochum Welt track. "Bayerischer Wald" is a cheery synth-pop celebration, and "Virtuosic Mechanic" is a more snappy club track with plenty of Bunker-friendly darkness packed into its bones. "Kammermusik" cools things down with a lovely meander through plaintive bleep lines and plastic synth leads.

Review: Fuzzy lo-fi electronics with a strict hardware/analogue focus courtesy of UK producer Polly Moneaux on local imprint Let's Go Swimming. The London label have been causing quite a stir as of late, not just for their respectful reference to the late/great Arthur Russell, but also for their interesting line ups at their parties at Stoke Newington's Waiting Room. The lush ambient opener "Out The Other" is the perfect introduction to the stomping and fuzzed out "Wet On The Wheel". There is quite a bit of variety on here; the noisy industrial/experimental cut "Send In The Drones" cleanses the audio palette to make way for the deep electro jam "Lunch With The Girls" until the lovely closer "This Into That" provides a nice contrast.

Review: It's another slice of Pekka's singular atmospherics, beautifully presented in Metaphysik's usual screen-printed style. These four tracks span the full range of the ambient genre, from the eerie drones of "Conquete (Version III)" to the bouncy, growling semi-techno that is "Ricochet" and even the stumbling bursts of noise that characterise "Corridor Berlin-Moscou". Sublime grey-scaled experimentations in sound textures.

Review: A genuinely unique project; Fundamental's Alex Stark created this highly limited and beautifully presented project via his love for Cygnus. This led to Biosoft Records which led to the discovery of Patronen, a man who made two album's worth of material (and probably more) on analogue machines in the early 90s and refuses to move from shadows. Twin Paradox celebrates this prolific, formative work across two albums. With the classic electro angularities and epic synthetic cosmicity are very much of their time, there's an overwhelming sense of timelessness and relevance to the project too. We reckon if you listen to cuts such as the poignant, reflective "Abstand" or the distorted, shuffling phrases and positive harmonics of "Karlsruhe Nach Basel" in 20 years time, they'll still sound just as icy and futuristic. We also reckon you need to jump on this investment now! With only 100 printed, this will sell out very quickly.

Review: Contort Yourself reaches its sixth installment with yet another era spanning gathering of post-punk and industrial oddities for the most deviant of dancefloors to digest. In the contemporary corner we have Penelope's Fiance, a promising industrial artist from Greece. Meanwhile on the B-side, Nigel Ayers as Nocturnal Emissions takes us back to 1983 with the utterly chilling "Demon Circuits Bloodbath" and "Even The Good Times Are Bad". L.I.E.S boss Ron Morelli steps up as U202 to remix "Even The Good Times Are Bad" as a death march of malevolent percussion.

Review: Proof of the rude health of the Australian underground abounds with this new label from Phile, who step out with a self-titled debut EP that tells you all you need to know. This is searing, brutalist techno crafted with invention and imagination - the dense crackle of the beats and scorched peals of synth on "Found In Blood" are a visceral force to behold. "Marauder" is mellow by comparison, furnishing a minimal beat with live bass, dramatic string licks and steadily building atmospherics. The analogue dirt of "Abhor" is positively evil, and that's before Karina Utomo's none-scarier vocals come into play. Brimming with personality and demanding of your attention, Phile made themselves a duo to watch in one fell swoop.

Review: As swathes of DJs and dancers get ever more into classic and niche electro from the 90s, Groovepressure has reformed to bring back some of its highly sought-after releases and keep the Discogs sharks at bay. With a fresh re-master and some new mixes to boot, the label makes a wise choice for its third reissue by picking up the record they first put out, Resonators' "Shuzzbuzz". The original mix and its B side "Booma" sound better than ever with a bit of modern spit 'n' polish, but then Robin Ball's electro and house versions of "Shuzzbuzz" push the classic into exciting new realms without losing that all-important old-skool flavour.

Review: White Edition: If you've seen the Modular synth documentary I Dream of Wires, you'll have been suitably impressed with the soundtrack provided courtesy of Suction Records boss Solvent. Whilst there was a double LP edition of the soundtrack, it didn't feature all the music Solvent had recorded for the documentary. That has now been remedied as Suction lay out this limited addendum 12" (available in three different colours of vinyl) consisting of previously digital only cuts and some fresh remixes. The DJs out there will be happy to see techno cut "Hadron" make the 12" upgrade, whilst the remix of "King Vincent" from Wrangler (featuring Cabaret Voltaire founder Stephen Mallinder) is equally floor-focused. Do check the other remix, of "Sender", which sees Todd Sines adopting his Interval alias for some unsettling modular sonics!!

Cat: EE 002RTM. Rel: 23 Feb 15
  1. Wallonie
  2. Aqua
  3. Wallonie (David Vunk & Spacemaker remix)
Review: Launched last year, Electronic Emergencies was a fine addition to the cluster of interesting labels hailing from Rotterdam with a quite excellent album from Dutch electro icon Das Ding a most illustrious debut release. Here EE resurface with a release of less familiar origin; Wallonie by mystery production unit SOS. What is lacking in available information is more than made up in musical impact with title track "Wallonie" a powerful exercise in discordant electronics that aims to unsettle and does so with aplomb. It's complemented by the equally dark, yet more futuristic sounding "Aqua" whilst Moustache Records man David Vunk and EE co-founder Spacemaker collude for a remix of "Wallonie" that brings to mind Frak at their greatest!

  1. Archetype (7:02)
  2. Metatron (4:11)
Review: Things To Think About is the first album from Dutch electronic music legend Steve Rachmad's lesser known Sterac Electronics project. It's been quite some time since we've been treated to some of Rachmad's electro-funk experiments under this alias but when inspiration struck, it is said that he returned to the project and jammed out tracks using an impressive collection of vintage synthesizers and drum machines. In addition to this material, he revisited the archives with Voyage Direct label boss Tom Trago and discovered some forgotten gems: that have been unearthed here for the first time in many years. This album sampler features two cuts from the collection presented on vinyl. A side cut "Archetype" is classic Motor City style electro of the sub-aquatic kind. On the flip "Metatron" is a deep and sublime serving of funky techno-soul in the tradition of Mind & Body era Model 500.

Review: After a storied recording career that has so far taken in albums for Further, Mathematics and Danyy Wolfers Strange Life label, Spanish artist Vagon Brei added label boss to his CV earlier this year with launch of Mystic & Quantum. Record labels come and go but few arrive driven a real specific concept in a way that Mystic & Quantum are with each album length release conceived to show stories of "adventures, magic, science". Having launched in auspicious fashion with albums from DMX KREW and San Laurentino, Vagon Brei helms the third release with a nine track set entitled The Secret Of Swamp Castle. Seemingly taking influence from Giallo Horror, Brei's album comes across as a compelling collection of synth explorations that will have you returning again and again in order to uncover the Swamp Castle's secrets.

  4. Golden Taurus (Heinrich Dressel remix) (5:52)
Review: Crimes Of The Future is the kind of label you can trust, no matter who is at the controls. The same could be said for Giallo Disco, and certainly the two labels orbit a similar space for lurid soundtrack-inspired hardware jams from the Italo age. Vercetti Technicolor is one half of the Giallo team alongside Antoni Maiovvi, and here steps out with a perfectly bombastic range of compositions that revel in B-movie brilliance. "Golden Taurus" is the perfect slow-burner, those mono bass notes warming like no soft synth ever could, while "Topaz Fear" brings a more action-driven sequence into the mix. "Death Wish" too opts for a pumped up club scenario, while Heinrich Dressel smokes out "Golden Taurus" into a seedy slow-jam.
