By 1983, disco had already peaked, but American band Weeks & Co brought the necessary soul and boogie influences to their sound to make their vaunted self titled debut album a real classic of the genre. Formed by singer/producer Richie Weeks and with input from legendary studio man Shep Pettibone, it was filled with dazzling tracks that go from deep to uplifting and back again. Each one is pinned down by a fantastic bassline off which all manner of trumpets, strings and withering sci-fi chords explode. The vocals touch on real subjects rather than trite declarations of love and make it as essential as it ever was all these years later.
