By the time he released his debut album, 2011's decidedly baggy and sun-kissed Within & Without, Ernest Greene's Washed Out project was already picking up serious hype, thanks in no small part to his delightfully immersive fusions of chillwave, psychedelic pop and near-horizontal shoegaze revivalism. Here he returns with Paracosm, an album supposedly inspired by Greene's desire to "create an imaginary world". As twee as that sounds, Greene can get away with it - not least because he retains the ability to create woozy, atmospheric and, yes, immersive song-scapes. The results are, at times, breathtaking; for proof, check the glistening Hawaiian lilt of "Don't Give Up", the wall of sound blast of "All I Know" and the wide-eyed Balearic fluidity of "Paracosm".
