Wareika's latest full-length excursion, their first for Mule Musiq, started life as an "unplanned four hour jam session", which was then overdubbed with additional congas and synthesizer parts, before being meticulously edited down into a non-stop, hour-long "meditation". As with much of the well-traveled trio's work, Water Sky Sun Wood is hard to accurately pigeonhole, sitting as it does in the cracks between deep techno, jazz, world music, deep house, ambient, and liquid electronica. In many ways, this makes their output - and this album, in particular - all the more alluring, especially when you consider their seemingly innate ability to craft fluid, shape-shifting music rich in warmth and atmosphere.
