If you came of age in the early 1990s, there's a good chance you spent many happy hours listening to the hippyish, pastoral ambient techno fusions of Ian Cooper and Paul Hammond's Ultramarine project. If you missed the boat back then, we'd advise snapping up "Signals Into Space", the veteran duo's first new album since 2013. While they no longer have half an eye on the dancefloor the pair has lost none of their ability to craft evocative mood pieces, dubby soundscapes, and the kind of drowsy, head-in-the-clouds workouts that fix spacey electronics and tactile synth lines to live instrumentation and woozy vocals. Throw in a cluster of sunrise-ready ambient cuts and a few experimental excursions, and you have an album every bit as good as their early '90s classics.
