Between 1970 and '74, the Voices of East Harlem - a 20-strong vocal group largely made up of teenagers plucked from the streets of the New York neighbourhood - recorded three albums of sumptuous, string-laden soul, funk and proto-disco. Here, Soul Brother has gathered together the group's two most sought-after albums, 1973's The Voices of East Harlem and '74's Can You Feel It. The musical mastermind behind both sets was Leroy Hutson, though fellow soul star Curtis Mayfield also worked on the production of the earlier of the two sets. Their contributions, along with a strong cast of players, immaculate orchestral arrangements and, of course, some stunning vocals from the Voices of East Harlem, make both sets impressively on-point. Both albums remain amongst the finest dancefloor-focused soul sets of the period.
