Swedish experimental rock troupe The Skull Defekts formed in 2005 with a mission to "make circular, ritualistic, monotonous rock music", and after just over a decade of abyssal and aggressive musical output, this self-titled full length appears to be the band's swansong. Where their previous albums have been heavily improvised, and had a stronger focus on using drones, or more straight primal grunge, this final record is their most compositionally constructed and cohesively brings together all the elements of their previous work. It's driven by a harsh and concrete wall of sound built from motorik industrial drumming, thundering guitars, synth fuzz and tribal percussion polyrhythms. Though this record marks the end of The Skull Defekts, its members' solo projects are poised to continue and the band aim to go out with an impressive, if also their darkest, bang.
