The latest sampler 45 for Greg Belson's Divine Funk compilation, a predictably deep dive into gospel soul and funk from the popular British record collector, offers a chance to cop to exceedingly rare gems. First up is Pearl Farano & The High Lites of Joy's 'Who's Your Boss', which was initially pressed in highly limited quantities way back in 1982. It's a heavyweight funk affair - think bustling breakbeats, heavy bass, crisp guitars and heavenly organs - with terrific call-and-response vocals from the male lead singer and female backing group. Turn to the B for a choice cut from Zella Jackson's 1977 debut album, My Eyes Have Seen The Glory. 'Days Are Like People' is a wonderfully sweet, life-affirming soul number with hints of Aretha Franklin - who, of course, started her singing career in a gospel church - and plenty of positive-sounding instrumental touches.
