Old pals Phil Asher and the Mighty Zaf have decided to launch a new re-edit label dedicated to disco-funk, jazz-funk and boogie sounds from - you guessed it - the '80s. OK, so not all of their source material will always be from that decade, but there's certainly an "81 to '83" flavour about this debut release. We're particularly we're enjoying the slap bass-propelled boogie badness of A-side "Free'x Beat", where sleazy whispered vocals and jammed-out piano lines rise above a killer groove. Crucially, the edit also features some carnival-friendly percussion wig-outs, which should be good news for all those who love to use drums to build dancefloor pressure. Turn to the flip for the boogie-era disco-funk sweetness of "1981" and the synth solo-heavy, low-slung brilliance of "Musical Dope".
