Review

As the matter-or-fact title makes clear, this expansive four-disc set offers an in-depth introduction to the interconnected worlds of "Mod" culture and Northern Soul. Traditionally, there has been plenty of crossover between the two scenes, with rhythm and blues-loving "Mods" amongst the first to embrace the stomping Michigan soul obscurities that were the backbone of the "Northern" scene. The selections here veer more towards the soul end of the spectrum, but there's no denying their quality, with famous scene staples such as Gloria Jones' "Tainted Love", Frank Wilson's "Do I Love You ((Indeed I Do)" and Soul Brothers Six's "I'll Be Loving You" (famously covered a few years back by wonky house act Crooked Man) being joined by a string of Motown hits.
