This year, Russian outfit the Diasonics have delivered a swathe of seven-inch singles, each of which acts as a showcase for their unique "Hussar funk" sound - an "outernational" style blend of deep funk grooves, psych-funk flourishes and melodic refrains that draw on their native Eastern European musical culture. They're at it again on their first Mocambo outing, which opens with the stunning strains of 'Sirocco', where Pierre Henry style synth motifs and decidedly Russian melodies rise above booming bass guitar, crunchy drum grooves and surprisingly creepy jazz guitars. Turn to side B for the slightly bolder and arguably even creepier 'Nymphea', another solid slab of quirky deep funk that should appeal to those who like eccentric 1970s library music and unusual musical mutations.
