Ata Ebtekar's SOTE project has been on our radars since that very first EP for Warp, all the way back in 2002, and then once again with his comeback via Rabih Beaini's Morphine Doser in 2014, with a cracking debut LP. These days, he's struck a partnership with Belgium's excellent Sub Rosa stable, and he returns with the second volume of Persian Electronic Music: Sacred Horror In Design. As you might imagine, this is 100% ethereal business made up of organic instruments and improvisational electronic tweaking, all processed via a warm analogue sound that comes from the heart of the hardware. Much like his recent works, this showcases the Iranian musical culture through a modern, perhaps post-apocalyptic aesthetic that merges the best of the ancient and contemporary worlds, both within Iran, and also of Iran's relationship with the West. A foundational LP that will undoubtedly be a cult classic in the future.
