Review

We're becoming accustomed to great compilations of rare and obscure African music, especially from Samy Ben Redjeb's impeccable Analog Africa label. Here, he delivers yet again, offering up a second superb retrospective of humid, tropical music from the golden age of Angola's little-known recording industry. Hypnotic, occasionally bluesy, always intoxicating and thoroughly enchanting, the 21 tracks that make up Angola 2 are rarely less than superb. There's a slinky, carnival-centric fluidity and, surprisingly, plenty of clear Latin influences, making the music showcased here decidedly different from the booming funk we've come to expect from many Afro compilations. For that reason alone, it should be essential viewing for anyone with even the slightest interest in vintage African music
