Analog Africa's latest essential collection focuses on the Senegalese scene in the late sixties and early seventies, and features a wealth of rare and previously unreleased recordings. Musically, it's as vibrant and exciting as you'd expect, reflecting the Senegal scene's distinctive fusions of American, Cuban and West African influences. The story of the Dakar music scene, and the musicians involved, is told in great detail in the accompanying 44-page booklet, which was apparently the result of four years of research by both Analog Africa and local label Teranga. Of course, this would mean little if the music was so-so; happily, there's not a duffer to be found throughout.
