Electric and acoustic bassist Ruth Goller has been part of various jazz-inspired projects - jazz-punk combo Acoustic Ladyland, heady psychedelic dub crew Champagne Dub and jazz-funk collective Melt Yourself Down included - but she has never previously released a solo record. Skylla, her debut LP, is well worth a listen, in part because it's such an unusual and inspired set. Featuring unusual vocals and layered vocalizations throughout, many of the tracks are built around left-of-centre bass riffs, fuzz-tone seeped lo-fi guitars and effects-laden aural textures. It's a very hard album to accurately describe, but is entertaining, experimental and eccentric in equal measure. Impressive stuff all told.
