Berlin-based Aussie five-piece Parcels have pushed the boat out on this follow-up to their acclaimed self-titled debut album. Day/Night is officially a sole album, but the band considers the double-disc set to be "two self-contained albums". There's certainly something in that, because while disc one is as sunny, funk fuelled and positive as you'd expect, with entertaining sing-alongs being joined by more languid, laidback workouts that draw inspiration from blue-eyed soul and 1970s West Coast rock, the second CD is a much more emotionally draining affair. Ushered in by the heart-aching strings and layered close harmony vocals of ambient number 'Shadow', it's a much more bittersweet affair musically and lyrically. Sonically it's still very much a Parcels record, just one inspired by heartache and paranoia rather than their usual good-time grooves.
