Bearded German producer Daniel "Oskar" Offerman has been relatively quiet of late, releasing very little since he delivered his excellent debut album, Do Pilots Still Dream of Flying, back in 2012. Distance is Depth, then, is a welcome return. Like much of Offerman's work, "4th Dimension" is pleasantly melodic, sounding not unlike a stripped-back take on early Move D, with more than a little Larry Heard thrown in for good measure. Pleasingly, its fluid melodies and smooth pads are underpinned by some appropriately raw drum machine beats. The tech-tinged "Test of Time" is tougher and darker without losing any of his trademark atmosphere, while the bouncy "Before Seeing Clear" laces alien melodies over a jaunty US-house influenced groove.
