Nautilus is the Japanese jazz trio from Tokyo that has been causing a fine storm with their funk and hip hop fusions. Toshiyuki "Toshi" Sasaki, bassist Shigeki Umezawa and keyboardist Mariko Nakabayashi make up the crew and to date they have covered the likes of Beastie Boys, Bill Withers, DJ Shadow and De La Soul. This time out it is the seminal 'Expansions' from Lonnie Liston Smith to which they turn their attention. Their version is epic, with warming Rhodes chords, skyward grooves and vocoder vocals all working you into a lather. On the flip, the legendary Ryuhei The Man serves up one of his fine re-edits.
