Review

Tal's latest tasty compilation attempts to shine a light on the folk music of Venezuela and its surprising links with similar sounds from the far-off African continent. It's based around field recordings made by Oswaldo Lares, father of Berlin-based musician Guillermo Lares, who spent decades travelling to remote villages in order to document the sounds of his homeland. It naturally makes for fascinating and thoroughly absorbing listening, with an accompanying booklet containing original photos and brand new essays fleshing out the story further. For the most part, the music is thrillingly percussive, with chanted vocals and the background hum of local wildlife only enhancing the listening experience.
