By the 1970s, Miles Davis had reached a point in his career when traditional forms of jazz were no longer of interest to him. Instead, he began fusing his own freewheeling take on jazz with harder-edged funk sounds. It's this gnarled, eyes-closed fusion sound that comes to the fore on Live in Tokyo 1973, a high-quality Japanese radio recording of a live performance that shows Davis at his funk-fuelled best. It includes a mixture of extended, improvisation-heavy interpretations of tracks previously featured on studio albums, as well as a number of made-up-on-the-spot jams with his backing band that have to be heard to be believed. In a word: brilliant.
