Review

Max Cooper has long been known as a DJ and producer whose immense technical skills are matched by an open-minded desire to try different things. Bearing in this in mind, you'd expect his two-disc contribution to the long-running Balance series to be rather special. Happily, it is, with the Nottingham-raised artist doing his best to balance (sorry) his desire to do things differently with the need to entertain. That makes for a fluid, slowly shifting and hugely entertaining affair where drifting experimental ambience, dewy-eyed deep house, acid-fired electro, melodious techno and weighty rhythm tracks rub shoulders with hazy tech-house, loved-up leftfield pop, crunchy IDM and the kind of clanking, industrial-influenced compositions that defy easy categorization.
