Review

The London Modular Alliance is a long-running improvised hardware troupe formed of Gavin 'Koova' Pykerman, Simon 'Yes Effect' Lynch and Pip Williams, who also oversee the Hackney Wick-based synth shop London Modular. Active in the live sense since 2012, the trio have recently transferred the project to the studio with a fine debut 12" for Kirk Degiorgio's long running ART label earlier this year. A second LMA release now arrives courtesy of Brokntoys and is another impressive trip into stargazing techno and electro territory. They doff a collective cap to classic intelligent techno and Motor City ambient on melodious opener "DeOrbit_118", before exploring Drexciya style electro territory on the impressive "The Mind Is A Terrible Thing", and "Tinker". Over on the flip, "Their Discontent" is reminiscent of both darker British IDM and Klaxon style Dutch electro, while "Out Of Sync" dips the tempo in order to pay tribute to such UK electronic greats as Aphex Twin, B12 and the Black Dog.
