Since coming together earlier in the decade, the Kyoto Jazz Sextet - nu-jazz outfit Kyoto Jazz Massive's "proper jazz" partner project - has provided us with a string of brilliant and beguiling records. This is another. It sees them join forces with Fertile Ground singer Navasha Daya and regular collaborator Tomoki Sanders to cover Pharoah Sanders classic "You Got To Have Freedom". Their version is brilliantly breezy and life affirming, adding layers of summery solos and extra soulful flavour to one of jazz's most positive and awe-inspiring vocal numbers. On the flip you'll find a previously unheard recording of the sextet's best-known (and possibly best-loved) original composition, "Mission". It is fantastic, and sounds like it would get jazz dancers particularly hot under the collar.
