There's definitely a fresh take on deep house going on with this release, the second one on Shadeleaf after Thatman Monkz's first release last year. Here Khalil Anthony is bringing some off-kilter soulful heat with some remixes that are guaranteed to make you sit up and take notice. "Need You Bad" may pack a typical New Jersey swing, but the vocal cuts through powerfully, while the working of string samples in the background is unusual even before the positively bonkers extra vocal from Nina Simone gets contorted in the mix. The dub may smooth things out a touch for those of a nervous disposition, but none of the power of the track is lost. Meanwhile on the flip "Shelter" provides a broken beat twist up with equal amounts of greatness about it.
